I am trying to change the default screen resolution in Run Level 3 to 640x480. I have tried changing the menu.1st file and the vga=0x301 mode sticks until the system begins to boot and then resets to a higher resolution. This system does not have X, or Sax2 so no go on those options. This is OpenSuse 11.3 x64.

I see some posts saying to edit xorg.conf, but when I go to /etc/X11/ there is no xorg.conf. I know the card and my monitor will do this resolution, as I had it to that resolution in windows 7 and in XP.

Firstly: My graphic card is intel hd4500 and motherboard chip's is intel G41. After upgrading, I understood suse 11.3 didn't have sax2. at a result. I have problem with graphic card driver and consequently can't change screen resolution, therefore after each restart, my resolution automatically fix to 1600x1200 but I would like to set it in 1280x1024? What can I do to change it permanently?
Secondly: I installed vmware workstation 6.5 and after it, I see a message that say vmware need to Kernel Header 2.6.34-12- desktop. I install kernel-syms, kernel-source, gcc and make but doesn't run yet. What happen for it?
Main problem: newly installed Suse 11.2/Gnome from DVD i586 goes to white screen after auto login. I re-installed once with same results. I have limited understanding of linux.
System: Biostar M7NCD Ultra mainboard with NForce Ultra 400 chipset, AMD Barton 2500 (overclocked), GForce FX5200 NVIDEA video.
FYI: I used this exact video card on an older mainboard and ran linux with it no problem and all hardware checks out okay when I drop in a HD with XPpro on it, which makes this a linux software problem by my reckoning - video setup most likely. I can boot to the green Startup Options screen and then my ignorance starts to show.
I wanted to boot to level 3 then try some things (init 3, sax2 -r) I've read about on this forum and from www search but I'm password blocked in level 3!? Install only asked me for one password and it doesn't work here.
How do I deal with the level 3 password issue?
I recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am installing 11.2 on an older machine, Athlon 2800+, GeForce 6800, 1 GB RAM. Install goes fine until try to reboot to the OS and just get massive garbage on the screen. Can't see anything just lines crossing the screen, it seems almost like the resolution is way off but don't know how to change that since I can't see anything. I tried two different install disks to make sure not the problem and got the same thing with both. I tried installing both KDE and GNOME on separate occasions and still same problem. I have used the same install disk to put this on an even older machine and that went fine. I do have windows 7 installed on another partition. I'm fairly new to linux but I'm learning.

Up until 11.1 Opensuse struggled with loading this correctly. in 11.1 & 11.2 all was well. A couple of minor tweaks in sax2 and it worked perfectly. Now hat sax2 has gone I'm not sure how to make these minor tweaks.
My problem is I have been forced to a screen resolution of 1024X768 VGA Following the readme file adding nomodeset at boot fixes the problem but of course forces me back to an old video driver with pretty poor performance. Is there any way I can change the screen resolution and set the correct monitor - any GUI replacement for sax2? Krandrtray will only let me set a max res of 1024x768. I need to set res to 1280x1024

Whatever resolution I choose, 1600x1200 is preferred, it is reset to a default of 1024x768 when I log out. I use the "Configure Desktop" option to set the resolution. I can find no other method to do so. The graphics adapter is an ATI hd3200. I have installed the fglrx driver. I cannot fine the "Control Center" for the driver. How do I make the selected resolution permanent?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI got my hands recently on openSUSE 10.2 (ppc) to put on my b&w powermac g3. i can boot from the cd and it gives me a text prompt and the choices install, rescue, and something to do with the network (which is whatever), and a not-very-helpful help option. so i type install, and my monitor says "input not supported." i figure, "ok, that's cool, i'll just plug in one of my old crt monitors 'cause it must be trying to use a resolution lower than my fancy-schmancy one supports." plug in the old one, restart, type "install," same thing. i'm not new to linux, but i don't really have any options with this prompt that any manner of googling or thread-hunting can uncover which allows me to specify the resolution at which the yast installer starts (or refresh rate, maybe that's it...) or lets me keep it in text mode through the installation. I tried typing "install textmode=1" which seems to do nothing special (same result as just "install") and just "textmode=1" (which is a fundamentally retarded approach, but what else am i supposed to do?). Once the operating system is installed and i can boot into a terminal, i figure can edit the xorg.config to use the resolution i want, but i can't very well install the system without seeing what i'm doing! It's just confusing 'cause it doesn't seem to like any display i give it.

Yast2 refused to work with an error message: unknown option -s (or similar). The regular updates didn't work also. Then I decided to do a new installation. Now I'm having a new problem: Display settings (Anzeige-Einstellungen) reports: Monitor unknown (Monitor unbekannt).
Possible resolution settings are: 800 x 600; 640 x 480; 400 x 300; 320 x 240;
Possible refresh rates are: 60 Hz or 56 Hz @ 800 x 600
I need 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz. In the previous installation it worked well. How I can teach openSUSE to run 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz?
YAST2 Hardware information shows me in Monitor > Monitor > Resources > Resolution: High: 768; Vertical frequency: 76; Wide: 1024
The VGA controller is also correct shown in Display > 3d Blaster Savage 4
i changed the boot up resolution in the boot up loader to 1366*768 (native res of my monitor) the boot option is still set to quiet splash however, instead of showing the progress bar, it would now always display the complete boot up log ( the list of starting services and such) i then manually changed the boot option from to 1024*768 at boot loader screen, and teh splash would show up, but then on next boot up if i stick with 1366*768, it doesnt work again

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm very new to Ubuntu and have 9.04 running on a Sony Vaio, don't know what graphics card I have. My screen resolution doesn't have an option higher than 800x600, so everything looks super zoomed in. Other threads tell me to edit xorg.conf, which I did (probably incorrectly). The result was the computer had mega problems when I restarted it, and when it finally got back to the desktop it didn't give me any other options for screen resolution. Also it says I'm in low graphics mode.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my desktop pc from 10.04 to 10.10 and ran into a tad of trouble. After I attempted to login from the GDM, something caused the system to crash and return to the GDM. So, I got my laptop out, did some googling, and decided to delete ~/.config/monitors.xml to try and reset the resolution. That got me to the Desktop, at which point I was greeted by more display issues.
The point at which the computer normally goes idle seems to crash and return it to the GDM as well. Needless to say, I disabled the idling/password prompt setting to prevent crashes every five minutes. Anyway, the prevailing problem is that I can't change the resolution itself -- as that seems to cause the same issue.

The OS is not recognizing the fact the laptop can do 1024x768. I've been searching the net for a few hours to fix the problem and I'm not getting anywhere.
