Oct 22, 2010I've been instructed to set up an sftp server this weekend. I was going to just use vsftpd b/c it's awsome, but then someone said it's supposed to use ssh. so here's my question:
Is Vsftpd the same thing as Sftp? is it the same openssh protocol for encryption and file transport? I've set up Vsftpd before and it just uses port 21, and it doesn't seem to ask all the same questions as ssh, so is it the same thing? or should/could I tunnel vsftpd through ssh?

Jan 18, 2011I'm using openSUSE 11.1 and would like to authenticate vsftp users against a mysql database. The newest version of pam-mysql I can find is from 2005. I'm concerned about using something from what appears to be a dead project. Is there an alternative? I'm trying to come up with a solution where I can manage FTP users from an application running from Windows desktops.

OpenSUSE :: Network Reconnection After Disconnect Doesn't Work?
Apr 2, 2010The main thing preventing me from going Linux although I have it installed in a multi-boot is the probelm I have with Reconnecting the Network (eth0)
If I reboot everything is fine and I am automatically connected to internet via my Ethernet_NAT_router/Homeplug_PowerLine/Cable_Router (using DHCP)
But if I manually disconnect the Network using the tray icon, or through the terminal, when I reconnect the Network Manager says I am reconnected but actually I am not connected to the internet. I can load my Cable Routers configuration page but pages beyond that in the outside world are accessible no longer...
To regain access I have to reboot.
The reason this is important for me is that I reckon if I could get this sorted then if I put the laptop to sleep it will will wake up and reconnect.
As it is using Linux sleep function is unworkable unless I don't mind losing internet.
I am determined to get this sorted eventually as I feel sure there must be a solution. My laptop isn't new but is a good workhorse.

Aug 4, 2010I have a user who just got a new laptop and when he connects to the FTP server, it verifies his username and password like it should, but when it goes to do the directory listing, it just kinda sits there. if i refresh the view, the folders show up. wonder if there's something in a log somewhere for vsftp i should be looking at. it could just be his ftp client or air card too, but i want to be thorough on the server too becuase it will help me learn.

Oct 17, 2010I broke my apache server. I went into the Yast administrator / HTTP Server and enabled the "rewrite" module. The server stopped working so I went back in and disabled it. Now the server still doesn't work and when I try browsing to any of the sites on it all I see is a page that says "No database selected" for any sites using databases. For static sites I get a 404 error. I broke rule #1 and didn't have back-up configuration files so now I'm stuck. What could the Yast module have done to my configuration files? I have restarted apache several times and even re-booted the computer.

Oct 24, 2010My problem right now is i'm trying to configure vsftpd to work with ssl.
My vsftpd is configured with virtual users and everything works fine (without ssl).
I can ftp to the server from a client on the same network.
Now when i try to enable ssl, the server won't start at all. Actually, if i run service vsftpd start, it look like it is starting, but if i check the processes, vsftpd is not there, and obviously, if i try to ftp, it fails.
So as soon as i turn ssl_enable=YES in vsftpd.conf, vsftpd won't start
The only message i get is in /var/log/daemon.log
init: vsftpd main process (6407) terminated with status 1
init: vsftpd respawning too fast, stopped

But wired internet did work all the time but then i had to reset our router because of some problems and now it doesn't work anymore! But the strange thing is, if i put the cable on my own laptop with windows on it, then it works as normal.
So i guess its some kind of DNS problem, but i'm very new with ubuntu and also not so good with computers. Our network is simple just an modem connected to an router: Sitecome WL-341.

After the upgrade i have this problem: When i print something it goes right to completed jobs, without an error and without printing. My user is allowed to print, I checked that.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Network Sometimes Doesn't Work
Feb 14, 2011what is the command to restart the network services? ive forgotten i think it uses -hup switch though. about 1 in 20 boots on my desktop ubuntu system results in the system insisting its no longer on a network yet has a fully functioning network card. a reboot always fixes the issue but that doesnt seem like a long term solution to me. If I ping a neighbouring system I get nothing. (sent packet count increases in ifconfig) If I ping from a neighbouring system back to my desktop I get nothing (no change in packet count) I can bring down and back up the network interface with no results. A sniffer shows the system definitely isnt sending anything out Everything worked previous boot and will work again after a reboot.

Jul 29, 2010I am using a fully up to date openSUSE 11.3 and today, I decided to upgrade my KDE 4.4.4 to Factory. The update went without a hitch, everything continued to work, including all of the items in my workspace.So now I am running KDE 4.4.95 and it looks nice. I like the new System Settings where the advanced tab is gone and everything is presented in a single window.
The only snag I have hit so far, is that Knetworkmanager no longer displays the network that I am connected to when I right click its icon in the tray. The screenshot may make clear what I am talking about.I am currently connected via a wireless network, which nm-tool confirms. However, it is not shown in the Knetworkmanager menu.

Dec 6, 2010My desktop PC has 2 NICs. I have Ubuntu on it since several years, and I remember that both eth0 and eth1 used to work. However, I discovered recently that currently only eth0 works, and eth1 is dead, but I don't know why. It's been a while since I've tried eth1, so I have no idea when exactly it broke. I suspect the problem may be related to the fact that the MAC address is incorrect: it is set to 00:00:00:00:00:00, which seems wrong. But I have no idea how this happened...Any idea what might be wrong and how I can fix it? Here is some output which I think is useful:

Jan 16, 2010I am relatively new at Linux and am having some problems with an install of openSUSE 11.2. I installed 11.2 on my Thinkpad X31 dual boot with WinXP. It seems to work very well except the network. I looked up swerdna's instructions on setting network cards up. I used YaST to try and set the system up as described in swerdna's instructions. Everything looks fine my network card and wireless card show up in the overview settings screen and everything sets up fine. But when I exit YaST the network doest show up no icon in the system tray and it doesn't even try to connect.
I did go into hardware to see if it was identifying my hardware and my network card shows up as "Thinkpad R40" and the wireless shows up as Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b. As far as I know this is correct. I have tried three other distro's and this one has gotten the closest to working so far.
