I am relatively new at Linux and am having some problems with an install of openSUSE 11.2. I installed 11.2 on my Thinkpad X31 dual boot with WinXP. It seems to work very well except the network. I looked up swerdna's instructions on setting network cards up. I used YaST to try and set the system up as described in swerdna's instructions. Everything looks fine my network card and wireless card show up in the overview settings screen and everything sets up fine. But when I exit YaST the network doest show up no icon in the system tray and it doesn't even try to connect.
I did go into hardware to see if it was identifying my hardware and my network card shows up as "Thinkpad R40" and the wireless shows up as Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b. As far as I know this is correct. I have tried three other distro's and this one has gotten the closest to working so far.

I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)

I just installed Debian and am getting a problem where I can't open the list of network connections. I can use the network manager applet to connect to wireless networks, but I cannot access the network connections list from there either (right click "edit connections)
I'm not incredibly knowledgeable with Linux, but I tried a few simple things I could think of like reinstalling the packages, or restarting the interfaces. (ifdown/up wlan0)
It's strange, because when I click "network connections," I see it show up for a second on the bottom panel, I get some rotating mouse icon while I wait a few seconds and then if goes away. Is there some kind of logfile that could help me identify the problem?
Using Debian 6 on eeePC1000HEB with Ath9k (i think) wireless card. Net Interface: wlan0

This may fall under the "ain't broke don't fix it" category but it's driving me nuts. I've got the Broadcom 4322 wireless adapter in my laptop and it works fine with broadcom-wl driver and kmod. However there is no ifcfg-eth1 file and the card does not show up in system-config-network.

I'm planning to use Debian as the OS for a firewall machine, which will sit between my internet connection and the rest of my computers. Now my network is all wired, no wireless whatsoever. I'm using the onboard the motherboards cat5 socket which seems to be using the VIA rhine driver and I'm also using a 3com 100MBps card.
I can list the machine spec if you want but it's nothing special, an old Athlon 64 rig with 1gb ram and an OEM motherboard, it all seems to work ok apart from the internet doesn't' seem to work. Lenny seems to detect both cards ok and I even used the net install CD and it managed to download everything using the 3com card.
The strange thing is when I'm in Lenny, I can't seem to connect. I can ping google, but when I try and view a webpage, the browser just sits there with a while screen... Could it be that using 2 network cards is confusing Debian? Right now I've only got the modem hooked up the the 3com card, and nothing connected to the onboard network card.

Look I have just installed suse 11.2 KDE at 32 bit. Now I need to get all the drivers and codecs to work properly. So I can download using yast and a bunch of repository urls. If Im wrong please correct me. My internet connection is one of those 3g HSDPA connections so I usually connect a usb modem to my computer (Huawei e220). I've googled around and from my understanding, I need to download an application called kinternet. However kinternet has naturally got dependencies and those dependencies also have dependencies and so on... I'm assuming this tree is pretty massive given the fact that I installed via live CD, the question thatbeckons is how do I download kinternet along with all known dependencies...wait for it.... in WINDOWS??? is it possible or do I have to hunt down every single dependency?? the idea is to get these rpms install them manually on my PC in order to get my modem working on the freshly installed system and perform any future updating using yast on that system with my 3g modem.

I have a little problem with my Linux Suse 11.2 Server. I have unused network card with one port, and one with 4 ports and two used ports.
so->
eth1 is connected to a dsl-modem
eth2 is connected to a switch
i want my suse server to route between modem and switch.
Somehow, I can't go in the internet via eth1. I have to create a bridge br0 to go in the internet. very strange, when i delete the bridge and set eth1 as primary device, i have no internet.
How can i route from eth2 (10.x.x.x) to (eth1 or br0 (80.109.145.x) to Modem (80.109.145.1)?

I am trying to enable DHCP so that it will give out IP's to some XP boxes when they boot. I have had success doing it dynamically, but not statically using the host declaration.
host xpTest {
hardware ethernet 00:50:56:2A:3B:00;
fixed-address 192.168.100.2;
}
My question is, what should the subnet declaration be if I only want to hand out static IP's like this? Also, the host is the same name that is specified in /etc/hosts correct?

I haven't been able to get a working X11 environment on a Dell PowerEdge 1850. Using YaST without an X11 environment sucks particularly when you are trying to configure Apache. In addition, the Apache configuration files seem to have changed significantly since the last time I configured Apache on a SuSE Linux distribution. Where can I find good documentation on editing suseconfig files to ensure that I get the modules installed that I need for the collaboration tool that I'm installing?

I am trying to get Fedora F11 to see my network PC's and have searched high and low trying to find the problem. I have a local network with several WinXP, VISTA, MAC, and MYBOOKWORLD, devices as well as 2 Fedora machines. Everything sees everything and is able to transfer files just fine except the two Fedora machines.
They see nothing on the network. All the other machines do see the Fedora machines, and are able to transfer files to them. Both have the /var/ directory shared. This network worked just fine back when running Fedora FC5 and FC7. After upgrading to FC9 I was unable to see the network from the Fedora machine, but did not have a need to do that so ignored the problem. After installing FC11 on another machine, I now have a need for the two machines to see the network and transfer files. The error I get is nearly identical on both of the Fedora machines.
[Code]...
COWBOY is the workgroup all of the computers are in. On the FC9 machine I do not get the error, the screen just goes blank when I click on "COWBOY" The other difference is that on the FC11 machine it does see itself and has an icon next to the "Windows Network" icon. I can click on it and mount the shares. They do not show up in the windows network.

I'm trying to setup a wireless AP with my old asus eeepc, so it can act as a repeater to connect my android device on the other end of the apartment. I've already created the Wireless Access Point using hostapd. It took very little configuring, just changed from mode 'a' to 'g' and changed the channel from 60 to 1 and It was all set. Next I setup a dhcp server. Also simple enough using yast.
Up to this point, I was able to connect my android device to the newly created wireless network. However It doesn't have internet access. I guess I have to configure iptables for this, but I find it incredibly confusing! Here are a few specs to help with any examples: The laptop is connected to the internet through eth0 with IP 192.168.2.120 Hostapd is using wlan0, and I'm pretty sure it created mon.wlan0 So, to sum up, when I connect my android device to the network I can, for instance, see what ever pages apache is currently serving on the laptop, but can't access the internet.

I've just spent the entire night trying to get my computer to share Internet with my laptop. I have DSL Internet with the modem configured to bridge mode. On the openSUSE server I have two NIC's. When setting up the DSL (pppoe) it created a dsl0 which is using the NIC eth0. So now I have dsl0, eth0, and eth1 I configured eth1 for DHCP server. When I connect with my laptop using DHCP it gets an IP address just fine. However I can't access the Internet. I think my problem is in the Kernel IP Routing Table. Here is the output from /sbin/route -n
[Code]...
dsl0 obtains IP from ISP eth0 is set to DHCP although that confuses me because how can the same NIC have two IP Addresses? eth1 static IP 10.30.60.1
