View 1 RepliesI have openSUSE 11.2 installed and i need to create a gateway server that allows virtual private network connections. I want to play with my friends some lan games, but we are in different networks, so i want to create this gateway server so we can connect with VPN clients to this server and play freely.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm on opensuse 11.4 (11.3 won't work with my monitor).
My computer gets internet through wireless and I want to share that internet through its ethernet port. So far I've tried using Knetworkmanager to create a network bridge between my wireless and wired connections. I created a new wired connection and shared it using the ip address settings. I was able to get both connections active, but the device hooked up via ethernet had no internet connectivity.
I also tried this command:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
but another test resulted in the same fashion (no internet on wired). I believe anything I add to /proc should have an immediate effect, correct?
We have a ldap server which has been running for a couple years now, and I was told to make a fallback / backup ldap server. So should the old one fail we won't be officially screwed.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm new to networks and servers, been using Linux on the desktop for a while now but always relied on the company's IT guy for setting up everyting LAN-based.
Now I want to build up my home LAN, and want to do it with Linux. I've managed to set up LAMP and file share servers.
What I am looking for is information on what I need, and how to set up a server for the following tasks:Centralized Username and Password, that when the user logs into any one of the desktops in the LAN, it uses this for authentication
Something that allows this authentication to be utilized in other servers (file access, web access, router logging, etc.). Something to make it easier for continuing permissions from one service to another. e.g. I have IPCop filtering content, and it has provisions for tracking who is making which request if there is authentication going on. (optionally) to run a script for mounting Samba shares or mapped network drives so from one system to the next. For example, in whatever box somebody logs in, it mounts a server share ("smb://Myserver/users/<username>") to a local folder ("my_user_share").
So;user "fred" ="smb://Myserver/users/fred" and user "wilma" = "smb://Myserver/users/wilma" but both would find their respective one mounted under "~/my_user_share". This would be irrespective of which box they are loggin in with. If the server share location changes (new server/servername), I change it on the server so the next time they log in it points to the right place.
I guess it is similar to Window's Active Directory, though I'm not sure what it's called, how to configure it and what it is and is not capable of doing.
I have an opensuse 11.3 install which I want to set up as a network boot server to install Solaris 10 on a Sun Ultra 10 client. According to what I've read, this requires rarpd and tftpd which I've set up on opensuse, but also bootparamd which I can't find for 11.3. It seems it was last included with opensuse 9.2. Does anyone know if it's available, if I could use the suse 9.2 version, or any alternative?

I'm not entirely sure what to do regarding kdialog, I assume it is installed (it's there in /usr/bin/), does anyone have any idea how to troubleshoot this further, Here is the first 100 or so lines of the script if anyone wants to take a look:

When I installed OpenSUSE 11.1 on my server, at some point, I gave the server a description. Whenever I connect to any of the shares on the server, this description appears. For example, on one Windows workstation, there is a share which appears in Windows Explorer as "Midwest on 'Cincinnati Corporate ISS Server (ISS0042)' (T:)".
For the life of me, I cannot find where this description, "Cincinnati Corporate ISS Server", is stored. I've search through /etc, and poked around ad nauseum in YAST, but I am missing it. Where is this description stored? What is the YAST function to change it?
Using Fedora 10, can anyone tell me how to setup the network scripts to create two network interfaces for vlan x and y. Both interfaces should obtain an ip from dhcp and both interfaces should run over eth0.

The hardware seems to work fine, the stick shows a green light, and I sent a test SMS via umtsmon. The umtsmon interface successfully identifies my Provider, but does not connect.
Here is part of umtsmon debug output:
Code:

I cannot seem to create a tun device using ifconfig, even though the module is loaded, and the node tun is present in /dev/net and appears to have correct access permissions, trying to use nstx which requires the tun device. Only thing I can think of is adding an alias, but not sure where, since there is no /etc/modprobe.conf or /etc/modules.conf in SUSE 11.3.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to create a user on my opensuse 11.4 computer, for the sole purpuse of using it to access network shared data (eg samba, nfs, etc). This user must be in the "Users" group, but it must NOT be able to login directly on the computer, i dont want him to show up on the GDM users list at logon, he must not be able to login to a terminal, etc.
How can i add a user like that? must he belong to a specific group?
On Linux Mint (Gnome) i used to go to Network drive. that is on the right hand side of Nautilus there is a short cut for Network. in there i could see my network hard drive and other laptops connected to the network, and i could access my files. but on OpenSuse, when i open the network folder, nothing comes up. may be it needs some sort of configuration.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAsterisk and its cousin technologies intrigue as well as confuse me. I'm wondering: Is it possible to set up an Asterisk (or other) server on a home computer with no special hardware and use it to route calls between mobile devices in remote locations? I'm hoping this could work similarly to Skype Mobile, Google Voice, etc., except on a WAY smaller scale. This is just something I'd use personally for calls to family and friends--nothing huge.
Since my computer is just a regular laptop with no 3G connectivity, I don't expect to use 3G for calls. I just think it would be cool, for instance, to go to a caf with WiFi and use a SIP/VoIP client on my Android phone to call up a friend who also has a phone or PC with a SIP/VoIP client on it. I realize I could do the same thing far more easily with an account at Skype or some other provider. My interest in attempting this project is more for the learning experience than practical use.
If indeed this is possible to do with the hardware I already own, any tips for starting out? My computer is a MacBook Pro 5,5 (dual-booting Sabayon Linux and Mac OS X). I know I could install Asterisk from within Sabayon, install a specialized telephony distro to a new partition, or run a virtual Asterisk machine--but I'm not sure which option, if any, would be most appropriate here. I'm also not sure if Asterisk would accomplish what I want, or if I should look at other software.
MySQL gets installed with root user by default, root user can administer every mysql database installed in the system. Question is how to create a new user that will not be able to administer all the databases in the system the way as root user is? Can it be done using webmin?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had set up a Samba server on SuSE linux a few years ago with a single shared directory. It has been running fine ever since, surviving various system upgrades and hardware migrations without ever needing to change the configuration (well, maybe once or twice). However, since a few weeks ago, it refuses write access to the share. It just returns NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED when I try to create or write to a file. That's also what /var/log/samba/log.smbd says (nothing more AFAICT). It's the same for all clients, i.e. remote Win XP PCs or local smbclient.
The funny thing is that it allows write access immediately after rebooting the server, but after a while (the next day or so) it refuses again. Restarting smbd or nmbd doesn't change anything here. I suspect that this started after installing the latest security updates for OpenSuSE 11.2 on May 17th. The new packages were (according to /var/log/zypper.log):
xorg-x11-libXext-2379.noarch
libmysqlclient-devel-2315.noarch
openSUSE-build-key-2398.noarch
libpython2_6-1_0-2213.noarch
libpng-devel-2159.noarch
Somehow I can't see which of these might have an influence on samba. But I am absolutely and positively sure that I didn't change anything else. I logged into the server only once in months, and all I did was doing the updates using the updater applet.
i want to create Central Opensuse repository for Patch management just like WSUS in windows, which automatically downloads Updates/Patches and distribute to the Clients locally.

The modem and provider has been configured through YaST.At first with KPPP there was an error with permissions as a user. One old thread discussed how to fix this through chmod, which was successful for me.Now there is the error message 'Unable to create modem lock file'.Under configuration, use lock file is checked.

There is already a pid file /var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid with pid 2802 killed old client process, removed PID file.
What is this error and how can i fix it,because every time im re booting my server i lost my network config.
When I try to connect to a new network it keeps trying to use the name of the last network I connected to. This has just started happening in the last two months.
