I am trying to network a drive which is a USB drive. The directory is /media/My Book and I am at a loss on how to network it properly. From my laptop that has linux mint, I click on network and I see SFTP File Transfer on linux-8m03 but it can never seem to mount.
View 1 RepliesI have Ubuntu Server 9.10 up and running as my file server. However, it sits amongst other PCs running XP Pro and Network Printers (e.g. Xerox Docuprint C2535A) on the network. My question is whether there is a way of adding the Xerox printer to the Ubuntu Server so that other PCs will send print jobs through the server. I think the printer is windows-based printer. Is it possible to do this? or are there any other options that you may be able to share with me?

1. Enable Network Time Protocol.
2. Add a new ntp server to the list.
How I can do this after the installation. Is there an utility to handle this? or do I need to modify any files manually?
I'm new to networks and servers, been using Linux on the desktop for a while now but always relied on the company's IT guy for setting up everyting LAN-based.
Now I want to build up my home LAN, and want to do it with Linux. I've managed to set up LAMP and file share servers.
What I am looking for is information on what I need, and how to set up a server for the following tasks:Centralized Username and Password, that when the user logs into any one of the desktops in the LAN, it uses this for authentication
Something that allows this authentication to be utilized in other servers (file access, web access, router logging, etc.). Something to make it easier for continuing permissions from one service to another. e.g. I have IPCop filtering content, and it has provisions for tracking who is making which request if there is authentication going on. (optionally) to run a script for mounting Samba shares or mapped network drives so from one system to the next. For example, in whatever box somebody logs in, it mounts a server share ("smb://Myserver/users/<username>") to a local folder ("my_user_share").
So;user "fred" ="smb://Myserver/users/fred" and user "wilma" = "smb://Myserver/users/wilma" but both would find their respective one mounted under "~/my_user_share". This would be irrespective of which box they are loggin in with. If the server share location changes (new server/servername), I change it on the server so the next time they log in it points to the right place.
I guess it is similar to Window's Active Directory, though I'm not sure what it's called, how to configure it and what it is and is not capable of doing.
I have openSUSE 11.2 installed and i need to create a gateway server that allows virtual private network connections. I want to play with my friends some lan games, but we are in different networks, so i want to create this gateway server so we can connect with VPN clients to this server and play freely.

According to what I've read, this requires rarpd and tftpd which I've set up on opensuse, but also bootparamd which I can't find for 11.3. It seems it was last included with opensuse 9.2. Does anyone know if it's available, if I could use the suse 9.2 version, or any alternative?

Whenever I connect to any of the shares on the server, this description appears. For example, on one Windows workstation, there is a share which appears in Windows Explorer as "Midwest on 'Cincinnati Corporate ISS Server (ISS0042)' (T:)".
For the life of me, I cannot find where this description, "Cincinnati Corporate ISS Server", is stored. I've search through /etc, and poked around ad nauseum in YAST, but I am missing it. Where is this description stored? What is the YAST function to change it?
On Linux Mint (Gnome) i used to go to Network drive. that is on the right hand side of Nautilus there is a short cut for Network. in there i could see my network hard drive and other laptops connected to the network, and i could access my files. but on OpenSuse, when i open the network folder, nothing comes up. may be it needs some sort of configuration.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set a Ubuntu home server to be a Network Attached Drive, a Media server, and Backup server.All of the computers (mostly windows 7 machines) can see and connect with the shared ubuntu folders, and read write and execute files into the folders. The problem is when programs are installed onto the server they operating systems cannot have "Full control", or change the owner of a file.
This is an issue when using the Ubuntu shared folders as remote hard drive locations because when Windows goes to run the files it keeps popping up with the "Open file - Security Warning" preventing files from being natively run.
I just setup an old computer with Suse 11.3. My goal is to store all my movies and stuff on the Suse box and access them through my home network. I have 11.3 installed, got the network setup and working, can access the internet, access files to/from my laptop to Suse box, and can even access movies/files on the Suse box from my WD Live media box. The problem is: when I add an external drive to the Suse box my WD Live does not totally 'see' it. he external USB drive is accessable on the Suse box as I've moved files to and from this external USB drive. The drive is a WD MyBook. I setup sharing in Samba and the WD Live sees the drive but cannot see the files. Is this a permission thing? Pretty sure I setup Samba correctly as I share several directories in the Suse box.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a peer-to-peer network with 25 WinXP Pro computers. I have built a Linux (SuSE) server for the purpose of backing up My Documents, PST files and favourites. Each user has their own folder containing the sync'd files. Each folder is password protected. I have configured each users machine with a mapped 'S' drive, which is the sync'd data folder on the Linux computer. All of the computers seem to end up with a "disconnected network drive" status after either logging out for the day or after some time has elapsed. Some will connect with a double click but others prompt for a password. I have tried mapping the drive using the option "Connect using a different user name", which is fine until the user logs out and back in again. I use SyncToy as a scheduled task, but can't connect to these mapped drives automatically, so the sync process will not work unattended.

OKay i installed the brand new OPENSUSE DVD, everything installed ok, but then i got to the internet problem, well connection problem. 1. I am going through a router to a att dsl modem. so i use a static ip as my desktop and my xbox 360 are both connected and both working fine, the router is a linksys etherfast cable/dsl router. my labtop is a acer with a realtek family Ethernet series model. so i tried just about everything and nothing works, so i switched to traditional and turned off the network manager, and it tried to load smpdd or something and couldnt get it from the dvd drive that was mounted even though i had used the drive 10 minutes ago to INSTALL THE OS. so them i went back to square one and tried a reinstall, but when i try to setup the connection on the install, the ip static doesnt work, i even plugged the thing directly into the modem and went to automatic dhcp settings- and still nothing.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu-based fileserver, which I have set up and works fine for 5 computers (Windows & Linux based). I have one computer, on Windows, which when I map as a network drive it works and I can transfer small files using the USB adapter. However, when copying over a large file, after 2 mins or so it comes up with the error "Specified network name cannot be found". However when plugged in using Ethernet, it will work fine.
What is even stranger is when I set it up as an FTP server rather than SAMBA, it will happily transfer a 4gb file on the USB adapter, which possibly knocks out driver issues (I have tried 2 different drivers, am currently using Linksys one from website - WUSB300N) AND perhaps the issue lies on the Linux server side with setting up the SAMBA server? However I do have another one of these adapters that works fine, but it is on WIN XP HOME with a custom network logon script (as HOME won't remember passwords after restart). BUT it does work on another computer with XP PRO as network place, so I tried network place on this one, and it still doesn't work.......
Im trying to setup samba so that i can copy some files from my windows 7 machine over to the drive on the opensuse machine running 11.2. i believe i set everything how it should be set up but no matter what i do i cant write filesfrom the windows machine. Here is my smb.conf

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running OpenSuse 11.2. I've got it running mostly the way I want and it connects to my wireless internet no problem. I have a external hard-drive on my Windows machine setup as a share folder. I can mount the drive with:

Also on a slightly different issue but still mounting related I have my HDD partitioned into four main drives (not including swap etc). They are my Windows drive, a seperate storage partition formatted for Windows, my main linux drive and a seperate parition for linux storage.
I want to have my Windows drive, my Windows storage drive and my linux storage drive all mounted on boot. I tried adding these to fstab, and they mount fine but again I have no read/write permissions. My fstab looks like this:

Lastly I would like my Windows Share drive to mount on boot but I have been advised that I would need to write a shell script for this, to do network checks as obviously I won't always be connecting to my network.
I'd like to have a CIFS drive mountable for various users. Each user uses different credentials and I want the drives to be automounted without using sudo-rights. I imagine the best thing to do would be to have the fstab entry point to multiple credentials files. Is there a way of doing that?

As i did a network restart, i get this error saying :
There is already a pid file /var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid with pid 2802 killed old client process, removed PID file.
What is this error and how can i fix it,because every time im re booting my server i lost my network config.
When I try to connect to a new network it keeps trying to use the name of the last network I connected to. This has just started happening in the last two months.
