General :: Kdialog And College Network - Unable To Read Policy

Sep 18, 2010

I am running Kubuntu 10.04 and as part of the registration process for connecting to my college residences network, I have to download and run one of thosese retarded Bradford Dissolvable Agent, it is a bin file and when I execute it I get: :~$ sudo sh Bradford_Dissolvable_Agent.bin Bradford_Dissolvable_Agent.bin: 92: kdalog: not found Bradford_Dissolvable_Agent.bin :: Unable to read policy Now you can ignore the fact it says kdalog instead of kdialog, examining the bin file in kate shows it's just a typo.

I'm not entirely sure what to do regarding kdialog, I assume it is installed (it's there in /usr/bin/), does anyone have any idea how to troubleshoot this further, Here is the first 100 or so lines of the script if anyone wants to take a look:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To Use Silverlight/ Moonlight For Watching College Sports

Nov 9, 2010

I'm trying to watch some of my college's sports online, and they are set-up to use silver-light, but for me it is epic fail. Seems like others are having similar problems, but that is why this is a FAQ, or a FOP, frequently occurring problem. And if I don't post it again, its not treated as a frequent occurring problem. The college page suggests that I use moonlight to watch, but the iced/tea program it recommended broke other programs operation.

Software :: Bash Script: Wait For Input From Kdialog Before Doing Sth?

May 27, 2011

The goal of the script is the following:Whenever I leave my house, my wife comes to my computer to check her mails (She has two computers of her own but they have a dangerous operating system, so they have been banned from the internet). She shuts down qbittorrent so as to download all her mails, and she forgets to execute it again on 98% of the times. End result: my computer is sometimes turned on for 10 hours doing absolutely nothing.I had therefore two choices: a) get on my wife's nerves until she gets the problem or b) write a bash script. If you are married, you will understand that bash scripts are easier to deal with than spouses.Ergo, I wrote the following script:

Code:
#!/bin/bash -x
while true ; do

General :: Could Not Read Network Connection List

May 30, 2010

I recently (like yesterday) decided to put linux on my laptop because I'm annoyed with windows. However after formatting my hard drive I seem to have an error message at the same point in windows xp and linux when attempting to log on. I have abandoned windows completely and intend to only run Linux on my laptop however after I type my password the following message pops up:

There was an error setting up inter-process communications for KDE. The message returned by the system was:

Could not read network connection list.

/home/jtb360/.DCOPserver_Josh Laptop__0

Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running!

I have attempted to delete the only dcopserver file I can find and ran some suggested commands at the command prompt (I haven't used one since Windows 3.1) to remove an ICE file in hopes that it would recreate the file and run properly after reboot and neither effort prevailed. My next step is dropping it from escalating heights until it either works or dies.

General :: Shadow File Password Policy?

Oct 1, 2010

Today i was going through some of security guides written on linux .Under shadow file security following points were mentioned.1)The encrypted password stored under /etc/shadow file should have more than 14-25 characters.2)Usernames in shadow file must satisfy to all the same rules as usernames in /etc/passwd.3)password for application Username should display * if username is not locked.4)If a user is locked it should be displayed as ! as the first character in second field of shadow file.

Confusion for point 1 and 2:Now i m confused as why the encrypted password should be more than 14-25 characters. Also what rules to satisfy How to check it?Confusion for point 3 and 4:There are lot of users with * as second field i guess they are not locked but according to 4th point there are lot of users with ! as first characters. How would i check whether they are actually locked or not.I m posting the output of /etc/shadow and /etc/passwd files for the account.

I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

Now if root user tries to change the password of a normal user, giving the same password, it is throwing an error saying "Password has been already used. Choose another".

Example:
> passwd user1

This should not happen with the root user.

General :: Display Password Policy Information For A User - Ubuntu?

Jun 9, 2010

Ubuntu Documentation > Ubuntu 9.04 > Ubuntu Server Guide > Security > User Management states that there is a default minimum password length for Ubuntu:

Say the password is to be modified by the user using passwd. Is there a command for displaying the current password policies for a user (such as the chage command displays the password expiration information for a specific user)?

This is rather than examining various places that control the policy and interpreting them since the process could contain errors. A command that reports the composed policy would be used to check the policy setting steps.

General :: Installing To A Wiped Hard Drive / "unable To Read" Errors?

May 14, 2010

I recently got a computer donated to me for free from my Computer Science class, as the teacher couldn't figure out what the problem was that was preventing him from booting to the startup screen (all I could figure out was that the slot the memory card was in was bad, so I switched slots and got it working). The hard drive on the computer was wiped with a disk nuker called DBAN. Now I would like to install a Linux OS on the computer, but whatever disc or distro I try gives me similar "unable to read" errors. I would like to know if there's anything software-wise I need to do before attempting to replace any hardware. An example of the error I'm getting is as follows (using a mandriva livecd):

/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: line 1281: /var/log/dmesy: Read-only file system
SQUASHFS error: sb_bread failed reading block 0xa6e58
SQUASHFS error: unable to read cache block [29b963ea:782]
SQUASHFS error: unable to read directory block [29b963ea:782]

Anyone know what I need to do to get this fixed so that I can install a Linux distro?

General :: Unable To "read" Files In Either Directory?

Jun 1, 2010

Is it possible / how can I? I have two directories "money" and "assets". I have two users, "jonn" and "jean". I "need" john and jean to share a login called "post". I want John and Jean to use this "post" login to be able to write a file to folders called "money" and "assets". I don't want them to be able to "read" files in either directory. I tried chmod 400 and that didn't work. They couldn't write a file to the directory.

What permissions can I give / assign so that they can write a file but they can't read any other files? Remember, there are different directories that they will "write" the files to.

No doubt you can change file and directory permissions on files such that when you upload a file via ftp, it uploads fine but isn't visible to the uploader.

If I run the same nmap command from my laptop (also fedora), it outputs everything on the network but my workstation. The strange thing is that the workstation has functioning internet connection.

Fedora :: Unable To Re Read Sda When Gparted

Jan 21, 2010

I have the following problem on fedora 12, x64 amd; I have installed fedora 12 from a live cd, whit custum partition tables (no lvm or somting like that). my sceam is (on a single 80 gb maxtor sata disk only 1 system, clean install):

/
/home
swap

Notitng more (not needed also). The installation was successfully. No problems on the install part. ALs no problems on the ugprade part. I installed the rest using yum groupinstall. When i want to add the extra 4 disks (all samsung 1 tb spinpoint sata) that i have for my backupdata, non of the partiotionprograms can recognise. If i do; moun /dev/sdb1/ /media/sdb1, it says that i need to add the file system. well, by some sort of misstake, i could find a workaround for this. When start gparted, select on of the samsung disks, select any of the flags in gpart, remove the flag and give it a ok, gpart can read the amount of data thats used. After that i ame able to mount whit a simple mount /dev/sbd1 /media/sdb1 command. When i use this command: hdparm -z /dev/sdb1, i can mount the disk afterwards, whitout problems. Of course, i need to add them als to my /etc/fstab file, so they automount each time at boot.........
