OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Tune Audacity Recording With Pulse Audio?
Jun 18, 2011I'm trying to capture audio from a stream, NOT from the mic. This is what I'm doing: Start Audacity, push its record button, play a song. It shows that it is recording but when I play back the results, all background noise, conversation, etc, is in the recording as well as the audio from the song. If the mic is unplugged, I cannot record what I hear coming from the sound card (as in what you hear from the sound card is what you get). I got directions on how to do what I want here ( Looking (maybe) for audio mixer for use with Pulse Audio - Page 2 Posts # 4 and 5) but it's not permanent. I got the instructions in post #11 from that same page to make such a change permanent. I tried using the instructions to make the change permanent (I backed up my default.pa just in case something went wrong) and these are the changes I had made:

It works! Though I have to say that the audio quality is mediocre (to say the best). I blame it on the quality of the built-in microphone of this camera. It sounds like it was recorded in a giant bathroom.

Dec 1, 2009All of my audio is working great now on Open Suse 11.2: MP3s, Skype,Flashplayer etc.all are working great. There is only one strange thing that is happening, when I plug in my headphones I get audio coming out of my laptop and my headphones! How can I get my audio to come out of my headphones only when I plug them in?

Jun 26, 2011I've added this packman repo: Index of /suse/openSUSE_11.4/ and installed all the necessary libraries and tools required as mentioned here using zypper: Restricted formats/11.4 - openSUSE Community Wiki When I try to play any movie in VLC I'm able to hear the audio for some time usually 3-4 mins and then audio totally stops though the video continues to play. A random seek or a seek forward/back also cause similar issue almost immediately. I switched the output module in VLC preference to different settings: default, SDL, Unix OSS, Alsa but the same issue persists. The audio recovers if I just enter the Audio settings menu in VLC preferences and click Save (even without changing anything) but after the same 3-4 mins or by seeking, the audio stops.
I disabled Pulseaudio for my sound card(s) in Yast->Sound, and I even kill the pulseaudio process but it somehow starts itself up again when I change anything in VLC audio preferences or even simply click Save without any changes. I've made sure all the multimedia related packages are installed from the packman repo whenever possible (I still observe there are few packages which do not exist on the packman but the openSUSE 11.4 repo alone eg. phonon-backend-gstreamer, phonon-backend-xine) Here is the rpm query output for the multimedia related libraries:

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Asus EeePC 1015PEM - Audio From The Built-in Speakers
Jan 28, 2011New eeePC 1015PEM netbook, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD. Came with Win 7 Starter; I retained this and installed openSUSE 11.3 alongside. Everything works well in Win 7 Most things also work well in oS 11.3, but there is a knotty problem with audio from the built-in speakers. Headphones are OK, but the speakers don't work reliably. Others have reported this on similar machines, and a number of "fixes" have been proposed in a wide range of forums, but so far I haven't found any that work.
I've actually installed oS 11.3 twice. After the first install I had no speaker sound at all, but after a day or two fiddling around it started to work of its own accord for no reason I could point to. For unrelated reasons (a silly mistake by me in Win 7) I then had to re-install oS 11.3 from scratch. This time the speaker sound worked after install, but then it dropped out again a couple of days later. Headphone audio has remained OK throughout.
I'm aware of and have applied the acpi_osi=Linux kernel parameter to enable the Fn keys on the machine (including sound volume and mute/unmute), so it's not that. I've combed the forums and Google extensively for other suggestions, and have tried them - including installing alsamixergui. I've also installed a properly matched ALSA KMP which changed some of the alsamixer controls but didn't cure the problem. Since it all works very well in Win7 and works sometimes in oS 11.3, I conclude that the problem is not with hardware but is something in software.

May 8, 2011I have just installed 11.4 64bit and duly followed the sticky guide for getting the required multimedia files installed. I find I have a problem with playing audio cd's the only program which will play an audio cd is Kaffeine but it does not play properly - it plays a few bars then silence, plays a few bars then silence and I can find no way of getting it to play without interruption. There are no sound problems with Kaffene when using it to play digital tv or dvd films. I have tried KsCD, Amarok, Mplayer, SMPlayer, and GNOME MPlayer none of which can I get to play a CD. With Amarok there does not appear to be a setting to play a CD as soon as it is put in the drive it would appear that you have to generate a playlist first, I can show the list of tunes on the CD but that's a far as it goes they will not add to a playlist or play.
Have just found the player Clementine which apparently is based on Amarok. Although not providing a direct play facility I was able to load the cd to the playlist then play the tunes. This may be a clue to my problems in that I noticed that it had to mount the player first. Is there a setting for auto mounting?Ideally I would like to put an audio cd in my player and have it play automatically without me having to do anything. Is this facility available in 11.4 and if so which program do I need to install?

Aug 31, 2011My Audio stops playing when switching to console from Xorg. When I switch back it continues playing. Is it supposed to be like this? Any way I can make it play continuously? I've already checked the Howtos and this forum for this problem but havent found anything similar.

Jan 18, 2010I recently switched to Ubuntu 9.10 from Fedora 12 because it was giving me problems, but now I've run into some problems with Ubuntu. I really only use my computer for internet and music, and I'm not really able to listen to my music.My computer is an HP Pavillion dv7-3060US laptop, AMD 64bit processor, 4gb ram, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 graphics chip and an ATI chipset (not sure which).
I have an altec lansing speaker configuration, with a built in subwoofer on the bottom. My problem comes that the sound is coming out of the subwoofer, not the actual speakers themself. When I try plugging in an external set of speakers, nothing happens, the sound still plays. Switching the device from "Interal audio analog stereo" to the other choices in my list does nothing (system>preferences>sound is the list im talking about)I'm able to hear music through my subwoofer when using totem music player, but neither rhythmbox nor amarok play any music. amarok doesn't play at all, and rhythm box shows the music is loaded but no sound comes out and it looks like its playing it at 2x speed.
I've attempted to follow the comprehensive audio problems guide here but I get to step 3 and the website isnt the same, so I can't continue.These are the outputs from the first few steps:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Guitar Won't Stop Playing Through Speakers?
Mar 11, 2010I managed to patch myself a line in cable and never had problems with earlier versions of ubuntu but with 9.10 I'm having a problem with my soundblaster card and my speakers. I'm trying to record with ardour but I can't hear the click track because my guitar is playing back through my speakers and it's louder than everything else. I never had this problem with earlier ubuntu releases. I've tried finding a way to disable playback through the speakers so I can just turn the volume up on the amp and record and listen back on what I've recorded. There's an option in ardour audio setup do choose what playback I want but no option makes a difference. Where have the mic and line in volumes gone in 9.10? Is there a way of fixing this?

Feb 3, 2010The sound doesn't play through the main speakers, but instead plays through the subwoofer on the bottom of the laptop. The headphone/mic jacks don't work either. I've listed the relevant lspci -v code in my other thread, but I'm not sure what other information is needed (like I'm trying to find the exact sound card I have so I can google around for a solution but since everything in laptops is so specialized I don't really know what to look for).
I do apologize if this question has somehow been answered elsewhere but I've waited 2+ weeks for a response and have gotten nothing. Also, I tried following this sticky thread but the link it refers to in step (3) under general help does not work, so I cannot proceed with any of the directions.
I am anxious to resolve this problem as I just discovered compiz-fusion and it just makes it even more fun to be loaded into my Ubuntu install, and I'm anxious to make the full-time transition to Ubuntu but I won't be able to do that if I can't play music.

Apr 30, 2010I have a question about audio recording. I've always wanted to set up a sort of personal studio. Not anything too professional, but I want to be able to make quality recordings without too many problems. All I'll probably end up using is a midi keyboard electric guitar and bass. But what I was wondering was, is it a better idea to get a Mac for something like that, or will Ubuntu support that just fine? I know there's great software available, and I've got used to using Jack. But I've read problems about real-time kernel support and xruns with Jack and Ardour, and I'm just wondering if that's something that will make using Ubuntu for this complicated.

Aug 12, 2010I want to do a screen capture with audio and video. I use Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit.I have now spend about half a day trying various tools, most of which seem to be half finished or abandoned. I have not found any usable docs for any of these.gtk-recordmydesktop and xvidcap will both capture video, but seem unable to capture audio from a microphone. The mic is connected and the sound preferences "input" tab shows the input level jumping up when I speak, so it must be working.
I tried the pulse audio device chooser app to make sure the mic is selected, but the choices for input are DEFAULT and "other", which shows a blank input with no choices.xvidcap multi-frame dialog has dev/dsp pre-selected as the input device, with no other options. It does not work.If I enable audio with gtk-recordmydesktop, it refuses to start and says it cannot open the sound card. There is no apparently no way to do this using the "advanced" dialog which has DEFAULT preselected as the audio input device and no other options. /dev/dsp also fails to start.I spent some time searching google and the forums here, to no avail. So should I give up trying to do this with Linux or is there some obscure method I only need to discover?I prefer xvidcap, since the ogg format output by recordmydesktop seems to be a write-only format.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Recording TV Audio / Video With DVDs?
Oct 4, 2010First up, let me say this post has almost nothing to do with Ubuntu, so you may ask: Then why am I here? I am here because I didn't know where else to turn.
My main problem here is that I would like to be able to record myself playing a video game on my TV, and be able to toss the file onto my computer to edit/upload. I've heard of 'Dazzle' those TV recorder things, but I'm looking for more of a home quickfix.
What I was thinking of doing was hooking up a DVD player to a tv. Then hooking up my wii to the DVD player, to the TV. This way the game would be displayed on channel three. If I were to do this, would I be able to put a blank DVD in the drive, and set it to record channel three? Since channel three will be my game, would it record the video game? I'm sure if it would, it wouldn't be the best quality.

Ok my respected Linux genius. This is my project. First I have a Windows / Linux combo OS set-up!
In my windows, I use the latest realtex sound driver as this gives me complete control with recording output control and Microphone gain control. In the set-up, there is a stereo mixer component with is necessary to engage the direct sound recording from my sound card. To make this all come together, I use a sound recording software [ free sound recorder 9 ] and to convert the recording to a wma, wav, or meg, I use Roxio 10 to produce audio cd's to play on all CD Players.
The challenge for me in Linux is to create the same set-up with Linux applications to produce the same professional results.Presently, my kubuntu 10.04 has Alsa sound drivers, with a version of realtek incorporated. I have the Alsa mixer software as well as Audacity as the sound recorder program. But no matter what I do, audacity depends on the microphone to record, which makes the final recording pure crap. If I lower the microphone boost or gain in my Alsa mix, then Audacity can not record the ambient sound from the speaker output and it will only recognize mono and pulse as the sound method. With the pre mention set up, Who has a set up identical to what is offered to windows that will do exactly the same for Linux. I basically want to record directly from the sound card in my Linux, without depending on using my microphone and then a CD burning program to make the conversion to MPEG or the necessary file format for the burned CD to play in all CD players, not just on a PC) I am trying to stay away from command line language in the terminal. I really need a replacement for Audacity,cause Free Sound Recorder is made for Windows Platform......I need a Linux sound Guru for the answer.I am not doing this to pirate music....I have over 3,450 music track inside my Rhapsody subscription and I like to record music for personal listening on my portable CD player and at 0.99 per track charge to do this in Rhapsody, I might as well by a recording studio and hire the singing artist.Basically in short..I need to know if there is a setting I can engage in my Alsa Mixer panel that will allow me to record directly from my sound card without using my microphone as a default. When I mute the microphone in my Alsa control panel, my Audacity program will not record using the microphone, which I do not want to use anyway. Nov 13, 2010how can I adjust the volume level while recording audio playback and microphone at the same time? I managed to increase the audio playback volume with PulseAudio Volume Control (Input devices -> Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Stereo -> pressing green button "Set as fallback"), but once I click on that green button, no no microphone sound is recorded.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Audio From Speakers?
Feb 10, 2011I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. The audio did not work prior to updating the system & software so it wasn't the updates. I have Bose Companion 2 Series 2 (Multimedia Speaker System) plugged in. When I was on Windows (I installed Ubuntu on top of it) they worked just fine. My headset (Microsoft LifeChat) work just fine. It is not muted nor are they on low volume.
If Bose Companion 2 require a proprietary driver how would I go about finding an alternative? I checked their website and all the software requires Windows NT+. I have tried reloading ALSA. I have installed Ubuntu Restricted Extras.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Audio Via Speakers?
Mar 7, 2011i'm currently using ubuntu 10.04 with AsRock p55/pro motherboard (supports bluray audio). I've just hooked up my logitech x-530 5.1 surround sound speakers, but there's no sound. My headphones work fine via the front panel jack. I dont think i've forgotten to plug any cables/pins on the motherboard. I cant install the asrock bios either, because ubuntu can't open the files. I've tried rehooking everything, but nothing seems to work. Could it be that ive forgotten to attach some cables? or is it a program problem?

Jul 18, 2010I'm trying to record some audio from 4-track cassette tapes using Audacity and a Sound Blaster mp3+ external usb audio card.I'm using Karmic.I have fiddled with levels on the sound card using alsamixer, but the only I way I can detect any sound from the tapes when recording is by turning the levels all the way up in alsamixer, and in doing this, I can faintly make out the audio beneath a large wall of static. If the levels are not maxed out, I only get static when recording in Audacity.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Record Sound In Kubuntu 10.04 - Default Device For Audio Recording Does Not Work
Jun 28, 2010I have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.
The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.
Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default
The only one that works is hw:0,2.
But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:
Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)
Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?
All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.
I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.

Feb 4, 2010so my problem is that i can't disable the speakers on my laptop when i plug in my headphones. in other words, i get sound from both the headphones and the speakers, when the expected behavior is to disable the speakers when headphones are plugged in, and enable the speakers when headphones are unplugged..
i've been looking around the forum and google, and i found a way to adjust the speaker and headphone volume manually in alsamixer. To adjust the headphone volume on alsamixer, i can raise or lower volume using the "Front" volume bar. To adjust the speaker volume, i raise or lower volume on the "Speaker" volume bar.
so, it's cool to know that i can do this manually, but i'm sure there's an option i can put in alsa-base.conf to automate this. i just can't seem to find that option...
anyway, i'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit...and here's my alsa-base.conf file

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can Play Audio From Phone Through The Speakers
Mar 28, 2010Most of the BT stuff I see involves connecting a headset to the PC...I'm not seeing much for what I want to do. I have a motorola Droid, and it's pairing via bluetooth to my thinkpad just fine. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64bit.What I want to do is pair the PC to my phone and have the PC act as the headset, i.e., the audio from my phone comes out my PC speakers. Ultimately I'm trying to record audio from my phone, voicemails from Verizon that I'd like to save to audio files. A couple years ago I was able to do something like this with a Thinkpad in WinXP, and record audio using Audacity. I'm not seeing how to make the PC work as a headset.

Aug 9, 2010I recently migrated back to Linux after a 2 year stint with Mac OS X. One feature I liked from the Mac side was that there were 2 audio modes in terms of volume and mute. For example, I can mute my laptop speakers (just press mute), plug in headphones, set volume, and watch a movie. If I accidentlaly unplug the headphones, sound wouldn't come out of the laptop speakers since they are muted.
Was wondering whether this is available in Ubuntu? I wouldn't want to bother the office or the people I'm flying on the plane with.

Mar 6, 2011I'm trying to use the LADSPA SWH Gate plugin to remove soft breath noises from an audio recording, but it's not working very well for me. It'll cut out chunks of the much louder spoken audio, while leaving the much quieter breath noises intact. I mean breath noises that are so quiet, they don't even show up on the wave form. I know you can manually go in and drop silence onto each spot if you want to, but I saw the noise gate method work wonderfully in GarageBand so I'd like to use it here too, but I'm just not getting any results.I'm using both Audacity and Ardour.

Mar 20, 2011This is a Lenovo L512 laptop with Intel HD Audio (Realtek ALC269 / Intel G45 DEVIBX) which was recently upgraded to Squeeze. I've been having trouble using the headphones on this machine, as the speakers continued to play while the headphones were connected. I normally use KDE, and the available mixer only offers one channel. I thought I might be able to manually silence the speakers by using the command line tool alsamixer. Unfortunately, alsamixer has a channel for the headphones, but it doesn't do anything, only master volume is controllable. By luck I decided to play around with Gnome today and to my great surprise, System -> Preferences -> Sound offers complete control over all functions of the audio hardware. Does anyone know how I could get these features working under KDE?
