Oct 25, 2010At least, I think it was the update that broke it. Anyway, my sound was working fine yesterday. I have gone through this thread to try and fix my sound, and it appears that my sound card has been uninstalled.

Last time my sound wasn't working, I was directed to this thread. The script from this thread might work again, but if it will just be erased after every update, I'd like something a bit more permanent.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Configuring Alsa (or Alsa-oss) After Hardware Upgrade?
Nov 19, 2010I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with,amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.

Feb 11, 2011I have a 32-bit laptop running a dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.09 LTS.I've decided that Ubuntu just isn't for me, and I want to remove the partition and restore the extra hard drive space back to Windows 7.
Now, a few months ago, I accidentally deleted my Ubuntu partition through Windows Disk Management, and I ended up not being able to boot up my computer. I can't remember what the exact cause was, but I think it was a problem with the GRUB, and I think I fixed it by reinstalling Ubuntu. Does anyone know how I can safely remove the Ubuntu partition without having to go through all this again?

May 13, 2010In my case, getting fed up with Lucid's flaky behaviour with my particular display, having tried various solutions that were really only half-baked workarounds (the best being to install a mainline kernel) - I decided to install Peppermint Linux next to Ubuntu, thus creating a dual boot system. But I've decided I don't really like Peppermint Linux. Further, in the meantime, I've found a workaround for Lucid which (so far) seems like a longer term solution (I installed Kernel xxxx?-22, while increasing my display's refresh rate - and now all is hunky-dory - it starts perfectly, with a 'normal' visual effects desktop, and even Cheese no longer crashes the system with my old webcam).
Now here's the rub....
How to (a) uninstall Peppermint Linux (with its Grub - which was obviously set over Lucid's) (b) reclaiming the whole hard drive (it's only 40gb total - as it's an oldish machine) for Lucid - without having to reinstall Lucid, which I now have very nicely set up indeed, albeit currently squeezed for space? Is there some nice patient geek out there who can put me out of my misery with a step by step guide? I've tried Google - but everyone with a similar problem seems to want to reclaim the space for Windows!

Jul 5, 2010I've used both 9.10 and 10.04, but I noticed, when I in 9.10 mounted my external HD and then safely removed it (without removing the USB-cable) it used to flash for 3-4 seconds (indicator-light) and then go out.
Now, in 10.04, it just keeps flashing (indicator-light), even though I have removed it safely (not unplugged it though). Why would it do this? The indicator-light should only flash if there is activity going on on the HD?

Jan 20, 2010I have been using this tip at URL.. to delete the temporary files created in /tmp for quite a few Fedora versions. But, I just found out that it does not work in F12. Is there are reason why it doesn't work?
You can put this into /etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog into the "stop)" section. This will clean up /tmp at every shutdown and keep your disk clean. Please note that you should not run this command when X-Windows is running.

Dec 29, 2009In attempting to install Opensuse 11.X, I have repeatedly encountered a warning I am not sure how to get past safely. The systems I wish to dual-boot Opensuse with will either be primarily Vista, Win 7, or XP, all of which will hopefully also have a third boot option for Windows Server 2008. If there are suggestions of which order to install these operating systems, but I understand if no one wants to waste this thread simply discussing that. When installing Opensuse over a Vista installation, it comes to a point where it finds the previously used partition, which is one a single HD laptop. It will warn, no matter which direction I try to go, that I will lose the entire partition.
This is the step I wish assistance with, as it seems to happen with any option chosen. Otherwise, I am aware that another partition could be created on this single drive, from within Vista, and that one could be chosen during Opensuse installation. I have understanding of the MBR. If someone was to make a reply and mentioned what they know would occur to the MBR, if I chose to install Opensuse to a separate empty partition than the one Windows is using, it would be helpful. A step by step explanation of which option to choose, when all options I've tried keep telling me that the partition will be lost, If someone knows a separate page that lists steps to take at that point of the Opensuse installation, designed to help those that are warned that the partition will be lost, it would be good to mention for novice users like me.
I was hoping that downloading and burning the installation disc would be half the battle for an experienced OS user of 15 years, but it wasn't. I am getting in to Opensuse because it is the alternate OS of choice for IBM, my future dream employer, as I get closer to a Computer Science degree and begin to learn programming. All systems that will use Opensuse will be experimental, and never mission critical, in my education.
