Ubuntu Multimedia :: Failed To Install ALSA - Instructions Out Of Date
Jan 13, 2011
I can not work with pulse. I have removed it but have failed to install ALSA in its place because the instructions I have are out of date. Could someone point me to alsa installation instructions that work with 10.10.

I'm trying to update ALSA, following the instructions here: SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE.I'm not sure how to proceed at STEP THREE. There are two sets of instructions, based on whether or not the kernel has been updated. I'm not sure if it has been. How can I make sure?

I am attempting to install the Linuxant ALSA driver to make my sound work properly (speakers muting when headphones plugged in). This worked on Lucid, but on Maverick the installation fails at the "building modules" stage. It directs me to a logfile, which I have reproduced here:
Code:
rm -f .depend *.o snd.map*
rm -f modules/*.o modules/*.ko
rm -f *~ out.txt *.orig *.rej .#* .gdb_history
rm -f doc/*~
rm -f config.cache config.log config.status Makefile.conf
rm -f utils/alsa-driver.spec .....
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.35-22-generic'
make: *** [compile] Error 2
The package partially installed I have no sound at all. I have kernel headers and every related -dev package I can think of installed. I'm running 64-bit; could that be an issue?

I tried to install OSS to see if it would allow my mircophone to work properly in the WinXP guest I was running in VirtualBox. I couldn't get it to install properly so now I'm left without any sound on my system. I was wondering how I could get rid of what ever files from OSS that are left and reinstall ALSA.I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.

I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with, amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.

Having had many problems with pulseaudio on a fresh karmic install, I followed some recommended instructions for removing pulse and using alsa (URL...). unfortunately, both pulse and alsa have gone and i'm left with oss which seems to work fine. I'd like to have alsa back though. When I open amarok, it plays the frst song on the playlist then pops up a series of 'could not initialise sound engine' messages, and crashes.

Whenever I try to run a windows game under Wine I get an error that depict I have no proper sound driver. I checked the wine config and there was only OSS option that I think it would not help me to get sound working. I think I have to use Alsa Instead but I don't know how to add Alsa support to wine. By the way in need DirectSound as well. should i download it myself and add it to system32 or there is a better way?
I use:
ubuntu (Meerkat) 10.10
wine 1.2

Just built a new mini-ITX system. Installed 10.04 x64 and then spiffed it up. Now to play DVDs, I followed instructions here: [URL]. Including the troubleshooting item about chmod / chgrp. I wasn't clear whether this would be saved across reboots. And rebooted.
Code:
xxx@atomic-breeze:~$ sudo chmod 660 /dev/sr0
xxx@atomic-breeze:~$ sudo chgrp cdrom /dev/sr0
xxx@atomic-breeze:~$
Unprotected DVDs play just fine. Protected ones give this error:
Why I can't play protected DVDs?

Well I downloaded an ATI driver, and there are some installation instructions:
Launch the Terminal Application/Window and navigate to the ATI CatalystTM
Proprietary Linux driver download. Enter the command sh ./ati-driver-installer-10-6-x86.x86_64.run to launch the ATI CatalystTM Proprietary Linux driver installer. The ATI CatalystTM Proprietary Linux Driver Setup dialog box is displayed.
My result:
marek@marek-desktop:~$ sh ./ati-driver-installer-10-6-x86.x86_64.run
sh: Can't open ./ati-driver-installer-10-6-x86.x86_64.run

I dual boot on separate HHDs. I have just done a fresh install with updates. I installed the restricted driver from the repositories, and I get an error message from ati catalyst (administration). Also I have "unsupported hardware" at the bottom of the screen.
Graphics card is a XFX ATI HD 5770 on this system, and I just sold 2 8800 GT's yesterday, and bought two more XFX HD 5770's for CF in my other system.
I didn't do a bad thing, 'cause I was really groovin' on Ubuntu, that I just installed at the beginning of the week.

I'm running 9.10. I was installing ALSA so that I could run my EMU 1616, and when I tried to go through the steps to install, I'm running into two errors that I've noticed so far. I think. Anyway, the first is that is states that the panelw library isn't there, and that alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device or address. The alsamixer one is really odd, since it's there, but I don't know why it won't run.
I initially had it running, and now it isn't. I've yet to get sound out of my EMU. the terminal window also tells me that it can't find the snd_emu file, even though it exists on the computer as well. I need an answer for a dummy.

I just switched from a basic digital camera to a more advanced one that stores both Jpeg and Raw (.Nef - it's a Nikon) files for me.When importing files in Digikam, I rename the files so that they start with Date and Time. Example: 20110121-223748.JPG for a photo taken on Jan 21st 2011 at 22:37:48.I was a bit surprised when importing both the JPEG and the Raw version of the same photo, that the filename is different by a few seconds (no constant offset, sometimes they are the same):
20110121-223748.JPG
20110121-223750.NEF
I did some "research" by looking at the exif data of both files (using "exiftool 20110121-223748.JPG" from the command line). Here is what I got back
(amongst other data):20110121-223748.JPG
File Modification Date/Time : 2011:01:21 22:37:48+01:00
Modify Date : 2011:01:21 22:37:48
Date/Time Original : 2011:01:21 22:37:48
[code]....
So it seems that Digikam is using the "File Modification Date/Time" (different in the Jpeg's and Raw's of my camera) rather than the "Create Date" (the same for both Jpeg and Raw). (The few seconds difference in "File Modification Date/Time" between the two versions of the same photo is probably due to the time that my camera needs to write away the data on the SD memory card. I guess.) Is there a way to have Digikam use the Create Date? (Or the Date/Time Original?)
PS: I'm on Ubuntu 10.04LTS, using DigiKam 1.2.0

I've installed both fluidsynth and qsynth, but get this error everytime I run qsynth. I'm trying to use my m-audio keyrig 49 just to practice playing the piano. I don't really care about having a whole DAW and whatever, I just want to play my keyboard. Maybe there is a better way than qsynth? Also, this happens:
Code:
/etc/rc.d/rc.alsa restart
Loading ALSA mixer settings: /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
No state is present for card K49
[code]....
I don't know that it has to do with my qsynth problem or not. I just thought I'd throw it in just in case it does. Also, xmms recognizes my keyboard in the alsa preferences, where the mixer device is.

My Compaq Presario F700 laptop has Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221 (checking from my Windows partition). I had everything working just fine until yesterday when I attempted to manually install an alsa-linux package that I downloaded sometime ago. Although the .deb package failed to install, it seems it messed things up and now there's no sound. The speaker icon shows "All mute" and I have no clue how to fix this. How do I 'unmute' it?

I (somewhat foolishly) decided to reformat windows XP and make my foray in the Ubuntu world with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid just last week. It has treated me fairly well so far and with the help of others posts have been able to get most everything setup to my liking. However...My Problem:I tried to install the ATI drivers for my radeon 9700 using ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.run. I tried to install it using the Ubuntu/9.04 settings, hoping that I could get it to work like that and I was quite wrong. When I restarted my computer I was started in simple graphics mode, and now I'm trying to set things right again.'ve un-installed the fglrx drivers (I think...) and now I'm stuck. Play On Linux tells me that I need to install 3D acceleration, something I know my graphics card has..

I have installed Xubuntu 10.04lts, Kubuntu 10.04LTs and Ubuntu 10.04lts because since I replaced my graphic card, I want to see which one of those 3 I like best and keep it. To do this, I need to configure my AGP Saphire HD4650.
Initially, I did not have any xorg.conf, so I went to recovery and created one with X -configure. This allowed to find out I was using Radeon driver from the start.
Then I followed the instruction from link "How To: Configure ATI Radeon HD 4650" but using kdm instead of gdm. Once I get to install the ATI driver ati-driver-installer-10-12-x86.x86_64.run, I get an error message that says to check the /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log.

I've Googled myself silly and I cannot find a dang thing on how to install. I've got a Dell Dimension 4700 with the Emuzed TVT3 Dual TV Tuner, and I've dual booted with Mythbuntu for use with MythTV. Though I have been unable to find any way to install the capture card. I have gone into the settings (and even after reading the wiki), I'm not 100% sure what to select. Not to mention, where it says probed, it shows failed to load.

tried to install drivers for FX 5500 today, the one that Ubuntu recommended (173) and the current version (260). Both installs failed when it tried to set up python-support. Returned an exit status of "10". I don't know what that means. I could really use some help, because I just installed UT2K4, and without the driver, I can't play it. I'm running the latest release, as noted in the thread title. Dunno if it helps, but it was a clean install, because an alternate iso upgrade failed and mucked up 10.04.

Ubuntu 10.04, 64 bit. Sound was working well, thought I would run some scripts [URL] to install the latest version of alsa, but now I have no sound at all. The command aplay -l gives:
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...
and the command
cat /proc/asound/version
produces:
cat: /proc/asound/version: No such file or directory
I no longer have a directory /proc/asound.If I open the window system>preferences>sound
there are no entries under hardware or output.I have tried to re-install alsa with this command:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall alsa-base alsa-tools alsa-tools-gui alsa-utils alsa-oss linux-sound-base alsamixergui
but still no sound.
