I just reinstalled my laptop with OpenSUSE 11.4, 64-bit and I'm using gnome 3.0, I can't figure out how to change the default video player to vlc though...I've tried going to 'Applications' --> 'System Tools' --> 'System Settings' --> 'System info'Here I can choose default programs, however vlc does not appear in the drop-down menu for videos. I do have vlc installed. I can choose to play videos with it when I right-click video files. But I'd like vlc to be the default so that I can just double click the video file and vlc plays it.It is a little bit confusing as totem is set as the default video player in the above-mentioned window, but when I double click a video file banshee starts

I reinstall OpenSUSE (For whatever reasons) where I prefer having VLC as my default video player, for every media type (.wmv, .mkv, .avi, .mpg).
I realize that I can go into Configure Desktop > Advanced > File Associations, but then I have to individually select each (quite cryptic) media type, and manually change my preference.
This should be way easier than it is (I'm computer literate, but can you imagine a new user trying to change these settings?)

I use headphones and have an MCP73 sound device; am running OpenSUSE 11.4.
On each restart, I get no sound. I have to go to YAST, Hardware, Sound, Other, Volume. The 'Other channels', Front slider is at 0%. If I slide it up to 100%, my headphones start working. At this point the Help text says to press 'Next' to save the settings, but there isn't a 'Next' button...just a Cancel and OK. OK keeps the new setting, but apparently doesn't save it permanently.
What can I do to avoid having to reset this slider every time ?

I recently installed SLiM and wanted to give it a try. I found out that XDM actually loads a bit faster on my machine, so I'm going to stick with it. I uninstalled SLiM, leaving XDM the only login manager on my system, but how can I change it back to the default? When my system boots up, I get the default console login.

how do i restore my KDE desktop to the Leonidas default that it installs with?

I tried changing my Theme via MAC4LIN and it didnt work i get an error messege that shows:
cp: cannot stat `/etc/gdm/gdm.conf': No such file or directory
sed: can't read /etc/gdm/gdm.conf: No such file or directory
sed: can't read /etc/gdm/gdm.conf: No such file or directory
Previous to this i had tried installing KDM but it didnt appear to do anything (as in change any of the display management settings) The guide that i was reading to install MAC4LIN just uses GDM so i decided not to pursue KDM anymore. I Get the following read out:
[Jason@Echo ~]$ yum info gdm
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Installed Packages
Name : gdm
Arch : i686
[Code].....
The goal is to set all my GDM settings back to normal so i can have that gdm.conf file. Anyone know a way to set the GDM back and repair any damage ive done?

I've noticed that on one of our servers apache is running on nice 19.Any idea where can I change it back to the default 15?I know I can change it on the apache startup script, but I thought it's probably better to change the default value that was probably changed somewhere. It is running as a service on startup.

i have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.

I am happy to say that after almost a week of wandering around the INTERNET and posting desperate questions to our Ubuntu forums on how to set paths etc., I have finally begun to understand just how environment variables and path setting works. I must say, it wasn't all reading this or that, but rather making changes to my paths that helped me to understand. Anyway, if anyone who does not understand environment variables is reading this, then I recommend reading this
HTML Code:
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/environment/paths.html

OK- I have 1 last question for my fellow linux users. Lets say I opened up $HOME /.profile and did some editing, and later decided to undo all of my changes but I forgot exactly what changes I made so now I want to set the default in there. How would I accomplish this? How do I set the defaults for any ~/.bashrc or ~/.cshrc type of files that I change.

So, I wanted to give myself a short cut to not just login to a remote server, but also change into a particular directory once I got there. This was harder than I expected, but this finally worked when I wrapped this up into a shortcut:
ssh -t user@example.com 'cd /var/www/mydir; bash'
And I just alter the directory path to make another shortcut to a different place on the same server. This does work, however, it seems when I log in this way, some of my environment is lost, and my locale is set back to the default "POSIX". That's not good. I'm running Gentoo Linux (amd64).

I just installed PHP 5.2 using this guide [url]
The install did work without errors and is listed correctly on yum but isn't working when I test a php script.
So now I need to downgrade back to the php 5.1 but yum is now stuck on this atomic repository, how do I get back to the Centos repository and downgrade PHP to 5.1?
