Sep 30, 2010
I'm not sure exactly what happened, but starting a few hours ago, every time i open firefox, the settings have all reverted to the default. I change them back to what i prefer, then when i open it again they are back to the default.

First of all not sure if this is the correct forum but anyway.Ok well i installed this theme because i liked the look of windows 7 (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.p...content=113264).So i ran the GUIUninstall.sh and it seemed to work but the login screen still has the theme i was wondering how i could change it back to the defualt one.

Today I installed Xubuntu desktop on my normal Ubuntu, to see what it's like, and to have the option to run a more minimal desktop when I want.
My only problem is that my login screen loads with the Xubuntu theme. This wouldn't be a problem except it makes it take significantly longer to boot into Ubuntu (Gnome).
How can I change it back so that Gnome is the default, and XFCE only gets loaded if I pick it at login?
what are my options with customizing Gnome at the login screen?

I tried changing my Theme via MAC4LIN and it didnt work i get an error messege that shows:
cp: cannot stat `/etc/gdm/gdm.conf': No such file or directory
sed: can't read /etc/gdm/gdm.conf: No such file or directory
sed: can't read /etc/gdm/gdm.conf: No such file or directory
Previous to this i had tried installing KDM but it didnt appear to do anything (as in change any of the display management settings) The guide that i was reading to install MAC4LIN just uses GDM so i decided not to pursue KDM anymore. I Get the following read out:
[Jason@Echo ~]$ yum info gdm
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Installed Packages
Name : gdm
Arch : i686
[Code].....
The goal is to set all my GDM settings back to normal so i can have that gdm.conf file. Anyone know a way to set the GDM back and repair any damage ive done?

I'm running FFx 3.0.5 on Debian Lenny and like many people before me, I am annoyed with the Work Offline setting being the default setting. I have perused the previous threads on this topic and found two solutions:
1. shut off the Network Manager daemon
2. change the settings in prefs.js
I have shut down the Network manager but to no effect The relevant setting in prefs.js is:
user_pref("browser.offline", false);
how I can change this setting to default to Work Online?

I was using ubuntu 10.04 till yesterday.. and due to hdd crash i have changed my hdd.
while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.
now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).
I would like to know how do i change this default appearance like ubuntu default 10.04 appearance. I am attaching a screen-shoot of my friends desktop, he upgraded his ubuntu thru apptitude update.

I have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. Because it said:Quote: For example, you can add an entry to boot another OS as01_otheros, 11_otheros, etc, depending on the position you want it to occupy inthe menu; and then adjust the default setting via /etc/default/grub. But then i found a file 40_custom that said:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
[code]....

How do i roll back firefox5beta to firefox4 and keep updating to the latest stable releases w/out upgrading to beta? The only extension that isn't working is FEBE which is incompatible w/ firefox5beta (profile, extension and preference backup). Have to use FEBE beta7 under Firefox4 so I don't think a compatible release for Firefox5beta is going to come out any time soon.

For whatever reason I can't get FF to show all of the add-ons I have. Yes, they are installed and they appear when as icons when I first boot up but after I close FF and start it again there are no icons (like Adblock).

In the clock display (Kubuntu 10.10 32-bit defaults at the lower right in the task bar) I have been having a problem. When I right click on the clock (is there a name for right-clicking when referring to both right and left handed people?) or sometimes when I just run my mouse over the clock, it changes from CDT to UTC. Doing it again reverses that. I'm speaking about the actual clock on the task bar, not the pop-up panel (tool tip?) that comes up when you roll your mouse over it.
I have both time zones selected so that I can see them in the pop-up info panel when I run the mouse over the clock for a second. But, normally, I just want the CST/CDT displayed always, in the task bar.
I've looked at all the options I could find and haven't found what I missed. It started up recently, so it was probably some setting I changed, but now can't find.
A minor problem, but annoying. Anyone? If the answer is already out there, link me up!

The clock keeps changing back to UTC which is not so good. My local timezone is about UTC +7. It appears to be good until I reboot. I can change manually in the bios or enter the following command hwclock --systohc --localtime No matter what it goes back to UTC. I checked the timezone data is correctly recorded and it is...
The command hwclock returns Wed 23 Feb 2011 08:18:05 PM ICT The command date returns Wed Feb 23 20:19:25 ICT 2011 so this shows the system time and the hardware time are the same but they use the 12 and 24 hour clock which is strange since the bios supports only the 24 hour clock. I wonder if the time / date syntax has to be presented in the same way on both the system and the hardware? The time ICT zone appears to be correct.

I tried to place a mono icon in usr/icons/etc but I didn't have the permission to do so. I tried to change my user profile to Admin, thinking I could go back to custom, but that hasn't and it isn't allowing me to go back to my previous setting.
Within minutes of being an Admin user I noticed I couldn't even unmount something. I really need to figure out how to change my profile back to default.
After that has been dealt with, I would like some guidance on how to gain root access to put my icon where it needs to be.

I am using Xampp on ubuntu 10.04 and I have set my document root to a folder in my home directory for ease of use with netbeans. There are several times where I have to manually go and change the permission to 755. If you just place a file in the directory it does not default to 755, seems odd since the document root folder is in my home directory. Chmod works fine but I was wondering is their a way to make all files or folders added to my document root to default to 755?

I have a Toshiba NB 205 Netbook. It is currently dual boot with Win 7 and UNR (9.10). The default OS is Win 7. I would like to leave the machine as dual boot, but make UNR the default boot OS, so that I don't have to babysit the machine and choose UNR every time I reboot the machine. BTW, I am delighted with UNR! What a great OS. Really like how it plays so nicely with Firefox. And much faster than Win 7.

I've seen previous threads about this, but they're rather old and I can't seem to apply their solution to the latest (10.04) stable release of Ubuntu.
What's the "best" way of changing the default option in the bootloader? I'd rather set it to "Windows 7" for the time being as it's what I use at work.
