Ubuntu :: Bring Back Top Toolbar Panel Default Settings?
Jul 27, 2010I screwed up and deleted my top panel and I cannot figure out how to bring it back to the original default settings. After trying different things found in other posts like
restart X, then in console:
gnome-session-remove gnome-panel
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
gnome-panel &
now both top and bottom panels are gone. I need help to bring both panels back. I'm on jaunty jackalope 9.04.

Feb 10, 2010I use Kubuntu 9.10. All packages are up-to-date. The problem: When opening a new window in firefox, the new window forgets the toolbar settings. So when I start firefox and the first window shows up, it shows my toolbar settings correctly, which is pretty minimalistic actually (no buttons, bookmark menu, google searchbar, etc.). But when I then open a new window from the original one, the new window has forgotten my toolbar settings and shows all the buttons, the searchbar, etc..
This happens irrespective from if I hit Ctrl+N, or print firefox after hitting Alt+F2 (which just opens a second window since the firefox process is already running). What can I do? I read in some other post that you should delete some settings file that might have gone corrupt, but I have done this and it did not help.

Mar 30, 2011I have been working for the last three months with Ubuntu 10 on a destop. Doing just fine and loving it. I decided to try a new position for the toolbar that sits at the top of the screen. I did a right click and moved it to the right side of the scree, didn't like the look of that. Right click on the bar and moved it to the left, didn't like that either, so moved it to the bottom. having done all that I thought I could put it back at the top but alas, I can not right click on the Toolbar.
It seems as though the two bars are fighting each other at the bottom of the screen.I would like to go back to the default position at the top of the screen. I do have a terminal window available to me on the desktop so if I could find out the command line to type in, I should be able to reset my tool bar. Being new I have no idea what this command would be.

Jul 1, 2011to back-up and eventually restore compiz settings, is it enough to back-up and restore the .compiz directory in $HOME? Reason is that the setting in my classic gnome set-up are different and partially conflict with the unity settings. Since I want to be able to run both environment (to give Unity a chance) I'd like to be able to switch settings easily.

Ubuntu :: Way To Reset 11.04 To Default Settings?
May 3, 2011I recently installed the new 11.04 release and was messing around with the Compiz settings on Ubuntu Classic. I tried logging on to regular Ubuntu and everything crashed. When I start up there is no log in screen, only text shows. (I enter my log in information then type 'startx' in the terminal to show my desktop.)
The desktop shows a messed up version of my custom configuration with Cairo-Dock all weird and everything in the wrong place. Also my custom start-up screen that I installed is distorted, and the GRUB screen shows up in purple.
If there was a way to reset Ubuntu 11.04 to the default settings? I tried typing 'unity --reset' in the terminal but it gets stuck at the line 'Setting Update "fullscreen_visual_bell"'.

Oct 6, 2010Seems that i have totally ****ed up my sony vaio (vgn-fz21z). I've been doing some partitioning and formatting without really knowing what i was doing. Now it is a mess.The vaio comes with pre-installed windows vista, which is no longer installed. I want it to be.Ubuntu 10.4 is installed. In grub I can choose vista but that is only vaio recovery tool. Which is not working. When I try the format cption and take it all back to the original settings, it says that c: is too small or missing.
I also have some cd:s with windows 7 and xp on, but they can't be read. Now the vaio is not even accepting my ubuntu live-cd. I have nothing of importance on the computer, so there would be no problem re-formatting the whole thing. Can it be done? I would prefer is the vaio recovery tool could be left untouched, it has its own partition. I guess I'm asking: is there a way from inside ubuntu to make a total system re-installation, get rid of different partitions and reconstruct c:, so win can be installed again?
General :: Task Bar - Putting Back The Original Settings?
Apr 7, 2010I am using Ubuntu 9.10, I removed the task bar at the bottom of the screen and replaced it with a new one. The problem is when I click on Fire Fox and by default Fire Fox would drop to the bottom of the screen, now it just disappears. Is there any way of putting back the original settings.

May 6, 2010Alright, I searched the forums, and made google my friend, but I can't find out how to do this. I installed ubuntu earlier today, and it installed right beside windows like it usually does, but it apparently didn't give itself enough room for updates on the default settings. So, here's my gparted screen shot Sorry if that screenie is HUGE. The most I've gotten toward a solution is formatting the unalocated space and then trying to merge things, which I'm trying now. However, any other help, including details more specfic other than "format the unallocated and then try again" would be awesome.

Feb 4, 2011I have a relative who made the mistake of changing the resolution of her display to something that her monitor does not support. The monitor no longer displays anything.If she connects another monitor to the computer, the monitor will work properly. If she boots off the live CD, her current monitor works properly. If she swaps out her graphics card with another with the current monitor, there is no display.Apparently, there is a remembered setting for the resolution of her particular monitor. Is there a way that it can be reset back to the default?

Feb 12, 2011In ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 there is now xorg file. Is there some way to merge the default graphic settings with my own xorg file? I'm currently needing to use and xorg file for my via graphics cards, which works fine. However, some functionality is missing. the icons have lost transparency and the unity menu doesn't allow click and drag scrolling anywhere (like a tablet). If I delete the xorg file and run the default, I get all the crisp clear cut of unity but of course I get performance problems everywhere else... i.e I cant plug a multiple screen in and video playback is crap.

I have copied users information from 9.04 to 10.04. I can log into newly installed 10.04 system. But the desktop menus and appearance is that of 9.04. I would like to change it to default 10.04 desktop menus and appearances. I have used command rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity and re logged into my system. But still the desktop menus and appearance didn't change. How can I restore 10.04 xubuntu default desktop menus and appearance settings?
