Ubuntu :: Changing Default Desktop Back To Gnome?

Jun 7, 2011

Today I installed Xubuntu desktop on my normal Ubuntu, to see what it's like, and to have the option to run a more minimal desktop when I want.

My only problem is that my login screen loads with the Xubuntu theme. This wouldn't be a problem except it makes it take significantly longer to boot into Ubuntu (Gnome).

How can I change it back so that Gnome is the default, and XFCE only gets loaded if I pick it at login?

what are my options with customizing Gnome at the login screen?

OpenSUSE :: Changing Wallpaper Causes Automatic Logout - Suse 11.2 KDE

Mar 21, 2010

Just ran into this issue with Suse 11.2. Everytime I try to change the desktop wallpaper, plasma crashes and returns me to the log in screen. This is the first time this has happened and it happens no matter what wallpaper I choose. Desktop effects are OFF. Strange that adding widgets to the desktop does NOT cause this crash, just changing the desktop wallpaper. The computer is using 855GM Intel Chipset.

Slackware :: Preserving Feh's LXDE Wallpaper Between Sessions?

Oct 3, 2010

I disliked LXDE's pcmanfm so much that I've switched over to feh and idesk but for the life of me I can't get feh's wallpaper setting to stay between sessions. Typing 'feh --bg-scale /usr/share/lxde/wallpapers/lxde_blue.jpg' immediately gives me what I want, but next login it's gone again. I know I have to put an entry in ~/home/pargoo/.config/openbox/autostart.sh but nothing works. So far I've tried:

eval `cat $HOME/.fehbg` &
eval `cat $HOME/pargoo/.fehbg` &
eval `cat ~/.fehbg` &

Debian Multimedia :: LXDE: Wallpaper Via Command Line?

Feb 20, 2010

Env: Lenny LXDE
[Question]

By (first step) doing: pcmanfm --set-wallpaper /point-to-new-wallpaper, it change the configuration to the new wallpaper, then, my question is: What is the most correct way to "refresh the desktop screen" (by command line) so that the new wallpaper is then displayed.

And by (second step) doing: lxsession-logout, and choosing 'Logout', the new wallpaper is displayed after the new login. No problem here. Is there a (most correct) way to completely change the picture and activate it by command line (without user intervention)?

Ubuntu :: Changing Log-in Wallpaper In 10.04?

Jul 25, 2011

I just wrote a little script to help anyone out if they want to do this. Just download loginWallpaper.sh open your terminal and cd to the download directory run

Code:

sudo chmod 744 loginWallpaper

then run

Code:

./loginWallpaper.sh

and follow the prompts Make sure the pic you want to use is a .JPG and is in your home directory. Choose Option 1 on your first run. It will move the pic to the proper directory on the system and will open the Gnome Appearance Preferences at the log-in screen. After you run Option 1 logout, goto Background then Add button. Select your wallpaper and "BOOM" it changes. Log back in and run the script again

Code:

./loginWallpaper.sh

only use Option 2 to keep the Gnome Appearance Preferences from opening again.

OpenSUSE :: Changing Default Mail App For GNOME?

Apr 29, 2011

On my newly upgraded opensuse 11.4 with GNOME,was trying to change my default mail client. I go into Preferred Applications and under email, all it lists is Evolution. I would like to change it to my Groupwise client. Googling the problem, I found that I should be able to enter a custom command there for a new entry but there is no custom option. So I googled that problem and found that it's a bug in Gnome. I found a few ideas for workarounds but I could never get any to work

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub - Not Changing Anything From Default - Error 22

Feb 11, 2011

I'm dual-booting Windows 7 and Suse 11.3, installing suse second on a seperate 80GB drive. After a ridiculous amount of faffing around due to my dvd writer essentially not working, finally get suse installed, messing with GRUB settings in an attempt to preserve Windows' boot manager, restart; GRUB error 22.

Go through the whole process again, this time accepting the use of grub and not changing anything from default - exactly the same response. None of the tens of boot disks/utilities I've tried will allow me into suse to have a look at the grub config. There are no applications for windows that will allow me to write to ext3.

OpenSUSE Install :: Changing Default Keyboard Mapping On Grub?

Nov 30, 2009

I have installed 11.2 with English as default language. During the installation, I tried to change the default keyboard mapping to Spanish, but right now, when the system boots it uses an English mapping. I've seen there is an option to change that on the grub menu and I would like it to default to Spanish. Is it possible? I haven't found much info on the web, but my guess is that changing the DEFAULT_APPEND in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader with an unknown-keyboard-related option will solve it.

I really don't want to re-install or delete users (to put it in context, I just spent 3 days trying to install Fedora because Anaconda doesn't know how to install GRUB correctly).

Probably my lack of understanding in ACLS.

Sep 28, 2010

I was using ubuntu 10.04 till yesterday.. and due to hdd crash i have changed my hdd.

while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.

now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).

I would like to know how do i change this default appearance like ubuntu default 10.04 appearance. I am attaching a screen-shoot of my friends desktop, he upgraded his ubuntu thru apptitude update.
