I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with, amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 and I've just gotten round to updating the sound. The ALSA built in is too old to have support for the X-Fi chip used in the Forte so I built and installed ALSA 10.0.22.1. On reboot, it detects the card as X-Fi Titanium series (as expected), but when I run the test
Code:
speaker-test -D surround51 -c6 -twav I only get output from Center, Rear Left, Rear Right and LFE - i.e. the front channel is missing. I'm not sure if there are any ALSA configuration files left lying around from my old sound card (Intel HDA audio) and I've forgotton what they might be called or where they would be.
Can someone tell me the locations of the various ALSA configuration files? Or is this a known thing about the Forte? (Maybe the card has the front two channels wired differently or something) Or maybe there's a configuration option I've missed.

On my Fedora 14 system, the gnome-volume-control-applet manipulates the Front channel, rather than Master (or PCM), which means I continually have to use alsamixer in terminal to adjust the audio volume in the other channels. In earlier version of Gnome (pre-pulseaudio?), this could be configured in the volume control preferences, but no more.Anyone know how I can fix this?My audio adapter is pretty standard Intel stuff. lspci: ode:00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller

I have an HP-dc5800 computer, and my internal speaker was not working, no matter what i did. However, i could get sound with headphones. Here is what i did to fix it. It may work for you.
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Add options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4 enable_msi=1 to the end of the file. I changed model=hp-m4 to model=hp-dc5800. So, changing the model to the model of your computer may work. Underneath that, i put in; options snd-hda-intel enable=1 enable_msi=1 single_cmd=1 power_save_controller=1 here is a list of some of the models. http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentat...dio-Models.txt

where to customize the modules thing? I've always used Ubuntu and there was an asoundconf file where I could change these settings.Haven't been able to find the same sort of thing on Fedora. A lot of people say I should either edit the /etc/modprobe.conf file which is now deprecated and does not exist on my computer, or edit some alsa file under /etc/modprobe.d/ which i don't have either.I've installed all of the alsa packages through yum.

I've got an Acer 7736 and had quite a few issues with no sound after my install of 10.10. After quite a bit of fiddling I managed to get that sorted and I now how have sound. I believe I'm using alsa although pulse also does seem to be on here. The reason I say I believe I'm using alsa is that after startup, I have no sound on speakers unless I unmute it in alsamixer.
As I understand it alsa's supposed to save your settings on logout/shutdown/reboot but this doesn't appear to be the case, and I'm not able to find any asound.conf or the like in the places they're apparently supposed to be.

I'm at the tail end of my upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and I think this sound issue is the last one I have.
As usual I've tried hunting for some answers but it gets very confusing when people are using KDE or PulseAudio or Ubuntu or slightly different configuration to what I have.
My config:
Debian Squeeze 2.6.32
Alsa (just because I was using that in Lenny and it was working, no other reason)
Gnome
Rhythmbox
Skype
Skype is pretty good - it has the sound configuration built in, so I say ring the speakers and it does. I say talk to the headset and it does. Rhythmbox is my music player (again just because I was using it under Lenny) however it only wants to play through the headset. I can't seem to get it to play to the speakers attached to the rear port.
Summary of some settings (transposed manually)
# aplay -l
*** List of PLAYBACK hardware devices ***
card 0: Headset (Logitech) device 0: usb audio
subdevice 0/1
card 1: Intel HDA device 0: ALC883 Analog

I'm running lucid, and my headphones plug is broken, it always detects it is plugged, so the speakers are always off... if i install oss v4, that does not support headphone detection, my internal speakers work flawlessly.
But I want to try the alsa ones, plus i coudn't make all my media keys to work as i intended when i had oss installed...
here is some information that might be relevant code...
i've also tried adding to alsa-base.conf this:
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop enable=1 index=0

I recently upgraded from FC11 to FC14 by backing up /home, saving the output of "rpm -qa", repartitioning, installing FC14, restoring /home, re-running "rpm -qa" and installing packages that I had before.
But I noticed that the nice GUI mixer that I had before which could allow me separately muting the speakers (conneced to "front" jack) while leaving the signal to the headphone
jack is missing. I think it was an ALSA mixer but I'm not 100% sure. I downloaded alsa-driver-1.0.24.tar.bz2 but after

I use ubuntu lucid x86_64 with pulseaudio. There seems to be some issues with how the audio is sent to the sockets. When playing an MKV with surround sound "front" recieves none of the actors voices. it almost sounds like it is the rear sound. Centre/subwoofer sound works correctly. I also get a problem with headphones and front where I cannot mute front and allow only headphones instead I can just mute headphone socket. This is entirely confusing so I hope someone can help me in the right direction.
Hardware: Nvidia 7600 gfx P5QL-EM mobo with 8 channel surround sound audio and hdaudio/ac97 cable which is set to hdaudio on mine in both bios and physically connected cable.

I just got rid of pulseaudio because it breaks in so many different situations. I've switched to Alsa, and all of my sound is working except in mpd. It seems like I have to set audio_output in /etc/mpd.conf. Here is my config file:
audio_output {
type "alsa"
driver "pcm"
name "whatever"
}
When I start mpd, this is what happens:
$ sudo mpd --no-daemon --stdout --verbose
playlist: play 1:"Party Playlist/01 Block Rockin' Beats.mp3"
decoder: audio_format=44100:24:2, seekable=true
alsa: default period_time = buffer_time/4 = 371519/4 = 92879
alsa: buffer_size=16384 period_size=4096
output: opened plugin=alsa name="My MPD Alsa Output" audio_format=44100:24:2
playlist: queue song 2:"Party Playlist/01 Umbrella [Feat. Jay-Z].mp3"
output: closed plugin=alsa name="My MPD Alsa Output"
^Clisten: listen_global_finish called
db_finish took 0.000000 seconds
And I hear the song play for less than a second before the audio_output driver is closed. There really aren't any error messages printed explaining why it's not working. I've also tried "oss", "esd" and "ao" for the audio_output type, and none of them work.

But I can not find a save or copy button.'vlc' will play the file but I can not find how to seperate/save the audio.I found a 'ffmpeg' that is suppose to read whatever is being sent to your speakers.Code:ffmpeg -f oss -i /dev/dsp -f video4linux2 out.wavThis produce a file that 'mplayer', 'vlc', 'audacity' will load but it is empty of useful data. Black screen only. This is the second week I have worked on this. Either I'm googling for the wrong words or what I'm reading, I don't understand.

I'm having an issue using MPD currently, using sonata as the front end. Quick specs are as follows:
Code: Fedora 13 x64 - Linux ltp01 2.6.34.8-68.fc13.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Feb 17 15:03:58 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux MPD version - mpd (MPD: Music Player Daemon) 0.15.11 Here is my mpd.conf file contents: Code: # An example configuration file for MPD # See the mpd.conf man page for a more detailed description of each parameter.

I googled my issue, and didn't come up with much to help me. Any advice on this? It's not a completely pressing issue, but I would like to know what is going on and how I can fix this, since I never messed with MPD before in my life.

I don't want to monitor my inputs. In other words: My microphone input plays through my speakers, adding a lot of undesirable noise from the mic. I can mute the mic inputs in alsamixer and/or in the Pulse volume control. This works to get the mic out of the speakers--but it also mutes my mic entirely, so I cannot record audio or use Google Talk. I want the microphone muted in my output, but available to my apps.
(I try to get on the Pulse bandwagon but it is so hard--I thought this was exactly what it was supposed to do, give easy mixing control over inputs and outputs. But I have to search for "fixes" with every single Ubuntu release for two years now, ever since it was first included. Ok, venting over, time to get it working!)

I just installed 10.10 and I'm having an issue where sound outputs from the headphones and my speakers simultaneously, and the volume control controls both outputs rather than one of them individually. This has been asked about before at this thread, but none of the solutions I've tried from there have worked. I tried installing linuxant, but it just killed my sound altogether despite uninstalling it afterward. I tried updating the Linux audio modules as per this page but to no avail.I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (64-bit) on my own custom built desktop, which for what it's worth, contains this motherboard.

i'm running fedora 12 on a dell dimension 4600. audio seems to work reasonably well for things like flash animation but i cannot for the life of me figure out how to route line-in audio through the system for output to my external speakers. on the sound preferences application on the gnome desktop: if i select the hardware tab and analog stereo input is selected, then i go to the input tab and have analog line-in selected, i see the v-u meter above moving around as though there is actually an input. [list]
but, i hear no sound. the output tab shows "dummy output" with no other choices. to get audio working for videos and other flash sites, i have to change to hardware->analog surround 5.0 output. such documentation as i have been able to find doesn't seem to describe my setup well, and in any case, i find all this fidgeting with hardware configurations an immense step back from the old alsa software. if this is going to be the future of linux audio, can i say, please, no?

I have recently acquired a Lenovo Q150 machine and attempting to use it as a HTPC. I've been reading that with this platform a newer kernel is required to make wireless, sound and a few other tweaks work correctly--so I bumped up to testing repositories to upgrade to the 2.6.38 kernel.[URL]...
The audio on this device has been more than a pain. I'm currently using XBMC to play media on this device and after setting the outputs to custom: plughw:1,9 sound is played correctly. I found this out by using alsamixer, selecting the sound card with the F6 key (Nvidia 1) unmutting all outputs, quiting, and running speaker-test -D plughw:1,X where X is the sub-device from the output of aplay -l until sound could be heard from the receiver.
Now my problem is that applications like mplayer, and iceweasel won't output any sound. I'd prefer not to use the optical out on the device and would like to send sound over HDMI. Has anyone had any luck getting it to work as it should?
I've also installed pulseaudio, not too sure if this is really needed. I've also used module assistant before upgrading to compile alsa from source, it worked but i just decided to upgrade the kernel instead of dealing with m-a every time an update comes through. I'm a new user of Linux and just recently installed Debian 8 on my computer, an Emachines W3118. My problem is that the audio went out a couple of days ago and I don't know WHY it went out, no audio, and HOW to get it back on. I tried several command line methods that didn't work, probably because they didn't completely relate to the problem with me being a Linux beginner and all. When I manually turn the knob on the speaker up, I can hear noise to where the speakers sound like they're physically operational, but with no output or input.

PC seems to run fine in single channel mode but monitor reports no input in dual channel mode and memtest86+ lists from 1-3 errors per pass in single channel mode. Motherboard (Gigabyte P43T-ES3G) can't be set for the 1.65 volts required by the RAM (2x2 of OCZ3P1333LV4GK PC3 10666). The mobo voltage choices are 1.6 or 1.7 volts. I have tried both and increased the MCH voltage from 1.1 v to 1.2 v, but so far can't get it to run in dual channel mode at all and single channel mode seems to run fine but I still get errors in memtest86+. Also tried optimized Bios settings and loosened memory timings (from 7-7-7-16 to 8-8-8-27 and tRFC 60 to 70) and reset Command Rate from 0 to 2. CPU is Core 2 Quad @ 2.4 Ghz, PSU is rated at 400 watts, Video card is Gigabyte GT220.

I want to create a small simple application that will let me change the Output of the Sounds option to go from speakers to my headphones. I can do this easily enough through System --> Preferences --> Sound, but I'd like to create a GUI front end for me to do this. This is more as a learning exercise than anything else. What is the best language for me to build the windows to do this? Also, how do I find the commands to let me toggle the sound settings? Where are they documented? I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.

i have a linux server runnig oracle applications. i need to access this server from putty using ssh through internet. i did by registering my static ip with the dnydns.org and i am able to connect to the server. but now there is no security to authenticate any user as any one knowing the password can login to it. i thought of configuring the firewall of linux server but the client ip`s are not static and they change continiously. so thought of keeping one more pc between the server and the router which will do the work of authenticating. but i am confuse as how to configure it to allow the packets coming from the internet after authenticating and to by pass the packets generated from internal LAN?
i have heared abut freeradius package but i am not sure will it work in my case?

I'm trying to crack my wep password just for kicks, but I keep running into the same error. When I try to use airplay-ng for the packet injection, it always gives me the error " wlan0 is on channel -1, but the AP uses channel 6". I've tried setting wlan0 to channel 6 manually, but that doesn't help. I spent a while searching for a solution, but it seemed like each page had a different, usually highly complex solution, that still doesn't work. I have the most recent drivers for my wireless card, and it meets all the requirements. So, is there any solution to this that will actually work?
