Nov 16, 2010just used the alsa upgrade script in 10.10 under headers 2.6.35-22 and after a reboot i have no sound. no mixer detects any devices.

Ubuntu :: No Sound After ALSA 1.0.24 Upgrade
Mar 16, 2011I am using linux mint 9 with kernel 2.6.32.29. I upgraded from alsa 1.0.23 to 1.0.24 using the alsa upgrade script. Sound was working just fine before on my Asus Xonar DS, However, my nvidia geforce 430's hdmi audio card is not recognized in 1.0.23 but it is in 1.0.24. Though the card is detected, I have no sound on either cards now.

Jul 15, 2010So i upgraded to 10.04 a few months ago, right after it was released. clean install. it worked perfectly out of the box, or so it seemed. I had had sound problems in 9.10 that i didn't experience after i upgraded... until i tried to use some headphones a few days ago. when i connected the headphones, the speakers wouldn't mute. i thought it was no big deal. i had the same issue in 9.10 and it was fixed after i upgraded alsa. i figured i'd try the same thing. I used the same alsa upgrade script i used last time [URL] and it fixed the jack sensing and the sound worked perfectly... for about 5 minutes. after a short while of playing audio, sound would stop playing. i'd stop getting sound from video files, audio files, and even from my browser. i'd have to reboot to get sound again... only to lose it again in about 10 minutes. Now it's regressed to the point where i have no sound even after i reboot.
weird thing is, when i test out an audio file with aplay, it works... even if i just get garbage sound from some mp3 files.
anyway, i've got an HP dv7 and this is my aplay -l output

Fedora X86/64bit :: No Sound From Pulseaudio , ALSA After 2.6.40 Kernel Upgrade / Get That?
Aug 2, 2011I just got the upgrade for the Linux Kernel version 2.6.40-4 on my Fedora 15 x86-64 box today, and the installation completed with no problems. However when I rebooted after doing the upgrade, I noticed that I had no sound. I use an ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card, and the opensource ATI driver, and use the HDMI audio from it for sound, since my monitor has a sound output jack on it. I've booted into the previous kernel (2.6.38.8-35), and sound works fine. I've tried with the new kernel in both KDE (my default desktop environment) and XFCE to get sound, and it does not work in either one. I've tried installing the VLC Phonon Backend instead of the GStreamer Backend, reinstalling Pulseaudio, reinstalling Alsa, modprobing the necessary modules needed for the card, checking all configurations with the available Pulseaudio tools (paprefs, pavumeter, pavucontrol), checked the volumes using alsamixer, and reinstalling the ALSA Pulseaudio plugin. After trying all of these, I can still get no sound out of any application, and I also noticed that Flash video plays at 2-3 times it's normal speed after the upgrade. Again, these problems do not occur on my previous kernel. Did I maybe overlook something, or can anyone else think of something I could try?

Nov 19, 2010I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with,amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.

Oct 1, 2010I recently converted an amd 64 bit WINdows machine to Lucid 64 bit. Everything has gone well. I had numerous issues with Pulseaudio that I removed it. Sound with Alsa has been great, including system theme sounds. I can record via a mike as well. What I cannot do is to capture sounds coming through the sound card. When I record I am getting empty files. The mixer indicates that there are two capture devices. Here is some data on my audio card.

Oct 11, 2010basically, sound will cut in and out. if i'm on videos, whenever sound cuts out, the video will continue for exactly two seconds and stop. sometimes i can reload the videos video, and it'll either play for two seconds without sound, or go normal, but usually for only a little time, not even a minute. similar problems for amarok, spotify and other applications using the sound card. this is the output when trying to restart the alsa demon

Oct 21, 2010I've no problems with sound on my laptop - it all works fine but Flash produces no sound at all.
I've got the Pulse audio applet running and when I'm using Rhythmbox it shows that on the playback tab and you can see the signal on the signal bar.
Viewing Flash videos shows the ALSA Plugin but shows no signal on the signal bar.

I used alsa driver/utils/lib 1.0.23 from alsa-project.org So it fixed it...but now I don't have sound in Flash (youtybe videos, etc.). System sound works perfectly (ev en Skype is working) I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64bit and Google Chrome browser. flash -> flashplugin-nonfree

Slackware :: Alsa - No Sound From Headphones
Oct 19, 2010when i plug in my headphones i was getting sound output both from the laptop speakers and the headphones, then i tried changing the sound.conf file and still no success and then i tried reinstalling the alsa - i downloaded the latest alsa-driver and alsa-lib and installed them, but when i rebooted there was no more sound from the headphones when i plug them in. I don't know what to do, i tried reinstalling alsa multiple times but still no success. Is there any way to bring back my previous configuration when i installed slackware ? Or some way to roll back using the installation dvd ?

Ok my respected Linux genius. This is my project. First I have a Windows / Linux combo OS set-up!
In my windows, I use the latest realtex sound driver as this gives me complete control with recording output control and Microphone gain control. In the set-up, there is a stereo mixer component with is necessary to engage the direct sound recording from my sound card. To make this all come together, I use a sound recording software [ free sound recorder 9 ] and to convert the recording to a wma, wav, or meg, I use Roxio 10 to produce audio cd's to play on all CD Players.
The challenge for me in Linux is to create the same set-up with Linux applications to produce the same professional results.Presently, my kubuntu 10.04 has Alsa sound drivers, with a version of realtek incorporated. I have the Alsa mixer software as well as Audacity as the sound recorder program. But no matter what I do, audacity depends on the microphone to record, which makes the final recording pure crap. If I lower the microphone boost or gain in my Alsa mix, then Audacity can not record the ambient sound from the speaker output and it will only recognize mono and pulse as the sound method. With the pre mention set up, Who has a set up identical to what is offered to windows that will do exactly the same for Linux. I basically want to record directly from the sound card in my Linux, without depending on using my microphone and then a CD burning program to make the conversion to MPEG or the necessary file format for the burned CD to play in all CD players, not just on a PC) I am trying to stay away from command line language in the terminal. I really need a replacement for Audacity,cause Free Sound Recorder is made for Windows Platform......I need a Linux sound Guru for the answer.I am not doing this to pirate music....I have over 3,450 music track inside my Rhapsody subscription and I like to record music for personal listening on my portable CD player and at 0.99 per track charge to do this in Rhapsody, I might as well by a recording studio and hire the singing artist.Basically in short..I need to know if there is a setting I can engage in my Alsa Mixer panel that will allow me to record directly from my sound card without using my microphone as a default. Mar 14, 2011I have a new install of 10.10 on a Toshiba Satellite with a dual boot of win7. I installed 10.10 and on the first night I swore the headphone jack sent sound to my external speakers (may of been plugged in during install). Then the next day I couldn't get any sound out of the jack. Sound kept coming out of my internal speakers. In win7 the jack worked normally. In Ubuntu I have checked sound preferences and my alsa mixer. There is no listing for a headphone jack (so it is not muted).

Ubuntu :: Gnome ALSA Mixer - Sound Doesn't Work
Mar 20, 2011I am experiencing problems with the Gnome ALSA Mixer. I installed Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro inside Windows (I am running Windows via bootcamp), and when I am running Ubuntu the sound doesn't work. After researching the problem online, I was told that one needed to download an application called the "Gnome ALSA Mixer", and switch the mute to off (apparently the mute is default). I downloaded the application, but whenever I try to run it the application window is blank. There are no controls of any sort. I was told when installing Ubuntu inside windows that the disk efficiency (I think thats what is was) is very much reduced, but I don't know if this has anything to do with that.
Also, is there a way to prevent the trackpad from registering stimulus while typing? I find it very obnoxious that every time I try to type in my password or the like that the curser clicks off of where I'm typing, so I am constantly having to move the pointer back and re-click in the area I'm trying to type in (if that makes sense).

Ubuntu :: ALSA Oddities And No Sound After Soundcard Change In Natty?
Jul 2, 2011I've just bought myself a E-MU 1820M audio interface for use in home recording after seeing online that a number of people have managed to get it working. The card replaces a Terratec DMX 6Fire (which i only managed to get outs from, no in's). I have done everything and anything suggested all on the forums and websites i can find and still no in's or out's at all, and no lights on the dock functioning.
Having tried and failed on a number of things i decided to see if Alsamixer had picked it up, only to be shown a blank grey window with nothing showing. I purged ALSA and started again (I have even done a fresh install of natty in case it was anything else getting in the way that i had done previously) but to no avail. I am using ALSA driver 1.0.24, which is the latest version, and according to the ALSA website, the EMU support was addded in post-1.0.15, so all should be well.
Debian Multimedia :: My Sound - ALSA Or Pulseaudio?
Jun 18, 2010I am using a couple of Debian Distro (Sid and Lenny) add some Ubuntu into the mix. I made the switch because I was amazed and satisfied with Debian --> once installed, everything works. For me that's okay for o so many years now. I don't question a lot because it just works and I do my job on it satisfactorily. Namely programming the LAMP style programming. Lately I have been using Debian to communicate over the internet -- using Skype and Pidgin and other such things, not to mention listening to music, watching movies, just using the default applications when I originally install Debian.
Along the way, I need to configure something -- that is desktop related -- like the screen resolution of a new LCD monitor replacing the old one and such. Now about my sound -- I'm not touching it because it is working. But that is not the case always. Now I have a constant error -- it is irritating. Rhythmbox don't make a sound always when I have open a web browser (iceweasel, chrome, epiphany) and a site with multimedia object on it -- like a video or something. So how do I correct this? How do I know, too what I am using -- ALSA or Pulseaudio?
Debian Hardware :: ALSA - No Sound In Certain Apps
Nov 15, 2015So I've got a new system on which I had to re-install Debian, and I've been trying to fix the sound today, but it doesn't seem to work... I've kept the same ALSA configuration (except a minor adjustment to the card number as this system appears to have two cards instead of one), but it doesn't seem to work as expected. I got this weird error while running an app that uses ALSA:

Fedora :: VIA Sound Card Not Found In ALSA On F13?
Sep 11, 2010My sound card isn't being found on F13, it's a VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60). I ran alsa-info and posted it to the following url:

I've had these problems before intermittently and it was working until I rebooted recently. I've also attached my yum log if there was something updated that affected it.
