I just installed slack 13.37. I was poking around a little and I noticed that I have all these modules loaded... yet when I open up /etc/rc.d/rc.modules almost everything is commented out. how are these modules being loaded at boot time?

I'm trying to prevent a few modules from loading at boot, like i.e. bluetooth, sco, bnep, btusb, usb_storage and uvcvideo, so I blacklisted them in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but they still get loaded. I've checked that I unload all of the ones depending on eachother so that shouldn't be the problem, I think. Does anyone know what I'm supposed to do to really prevent them from loading?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've recently been having a lot of trouble trying to install a ralink 3062 driver on my ubuntu 11.04 desktop. There are quite a few excellent tutorials on this website. [URL]... In my case, however, adding the conflicting drivers to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf didn't prevent them being loaded at boot-time, so I could not make the change permanent. I eventually found a workaround online which I thought I'd share here. Once you have updated your blacklist and module list, use Quote:
sudo update-initramfs -u
I'm a beginner so I'm not sure, but I think the problem is that initramfs loads the conflicting modules into memory before the system comes to reading the blacklist and module files. Once you've done this, restart your system and you shouldn't have any further problems. P.s. As far as I know this only works (but should only be a problem for kernel 2.6 and later)

View 8 Replies View RelatedI was using v 8.10. It came to its end of life and I felt compelled to upgrade. I upgraded to v 9.04. All seemed well, but then I discovered that I had no sound. As a test, I booted up with the v 9.04 CD, using it as a live CD. I had sound, so it seems as though it should be possible for me to have sound from my upgraded v 9.04 too, provided I can make the necessary changes to it.
When using the live CD and opening the volume control, I get as the listed device "HDA ATI SB (Alsa mixer)". That doesn't appear when I open the volume control using my upgraded v 9.04. Instead, it says "Playback: Null Output (PulseAudio mixer)". Also, when I check for loaded modules when using the live CD, I get many with snd in their name, but nary a one when using the upgraded 9.04.
Is there some simple way for me to load the same modules in the upgraded 9.04 as are loaded by the live CD? I tried to figure out the answer to this by reading other threads, but was simply overwhelmed by the volume of material and often wasn't sure to which version of Ubuntu it applied.
what is happening on my Centos virtual server (ps I'm having a great time re-learning Linux after a large gap and usually try and find out myself but this has me confused) First thing I did was install Tomcat and try and change the port to 80 using iptables -nat and it complained a kernel module was missing. Instead setup Apache to redirect requests so that's now working I then tried to install CSF firewall and the validation perl script returned fatal errors so I assumed OK my virtual server Kernel is restricted and used denyhosts instead which is working great
Here's the confusion.. I later retried the csftest script and it now works including all the iptables and nat stuff that fataled before. I've not rebooted or changed anything except run denyhosts and the postgres daemon + ended a few daemons that I didn't need (eg pickup,tlsmgr,courier,postfix,qmgr,saslauthd) Running lsmod returns nothing and /proc/modules is zero bytes so I'm not able to tell what is loaded? I'm tempted to try and get Tomcat redirecting via iptables and see what happens but if it works I don't like that something seems to have changed.. before I ran it direct as root now I'm SU into root from another login

This is the problem I run lspci -v which checks all drivers on my system and more. It says kernel driver in use is nouveau. Then under that it says kernel modules: nvidia recent, nvidia-96, nouveau, nvidiafb. So what it looks like I have 3-4 drivers for my video card loaded and one, nouveau, being used. I think they conflict with each other.
I'm trying to add drivers other then nouveau, because the mouse freezes with it. At this point I can't seem to get rid of nouveau, I go to terminal and type:
sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
And it says that it's not loaded so I can't dump it. lspci-v says nouveau is the driver being used and trying to dump it. It says it isn't installed. I'm confused. I want to dump nouveau, what should I do? I also go into Synaptic package manager and it isn't listed as being installed.
I have installed VMware (VMware-Player-3.0.1-227600.x86_64.bundle) on my laptop. When I open Vmware from Applications/System Tools/VMware Player.I get a window that says: VMware Kernel Module Updater Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel.When I click on install and after putting in my passwd.a window comes up with a list:

It looks,slackware is taking too much time to boot. It's starting daemons at boot time.

Used to work perfectly. I attempted to install VPN client, result is can't connect to anything. Networks are seen by network manager, nothing happens when click connect. Results below:

Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.
When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.
I am trying to setup Slacware 13.1 x86_64 to a encrypted partition. I used the README_CRYPT.TXT howto : [URL] At the step when I create an initrd.gz I get this error: Quote: ERROR: No /lib/modules/2.6.33.4-smp kernel modules tree found for kernel "2.6.33.4-smp"

This command was successful, but I don't know if this is alright. I made the changes in lilo.conf, add initrd = initrd.gz. This is all on unencrypted /boot partition. The boot=/dev/sda1 I also set for the unencrypted boot partition. When I boot the system I get a kernel panic:

I've been using cron to clear /tmp at boot time but thought I'd try another method. After doing a little research I added the following line:

And /tmp is not clearing out at boot time. This method seems to work for others.

Fsck is not check any file system which are not root file system at boot time.
Normally it run: /sbin/fsck -A -R -C -a
But this command doesn't do anything.

Got an Asus eeepc 900a. Runs Intel 915 graphics. Upgraded to slackware current last week. X would not start. Based on info here, I reverted back to earlier libdrm and xf86-video-intel. That got it working again.
Updated Slackware current again today. I think I got a new kernel. Now, halfway through boot time, the screen goes blank, then comes back and the font is tiny. Gone into framebuffer mode. If I start X, it just freezes. Nothing but a reboot will get out of it.
I have vga=normal in lilo.conf, but I read that this is no longer used. I can find no way to turn off framebuffer mode. From other threads here, I have tried append="i915.modeset=1" in lilo.conf. Has no effect.
I could revert Slackware to 13.0 from current, and that would make the eeepc useful again. Is there anything else I should try?
I've got a problem with the Claws-mail client. Couple of days ago I have updated the client to its newest version 3.7.8. Because I couldn't find a ready-made package for Slackware 13.0 I've downloaded the source, unpacked to a folder and using src2slack created a package. Package has been created using default settings. And when done upgraded as it should be with upgradepkg. And it was very nice until I've noticed that Claws didn't load into the tray.
Went into plugin loading screen and saw that the trayicon plugin isn't loaded. This one is easy I thought and loaded the plugin. And then it happened. The plugin didn't load but instead it spit out this message: "The following error occurred while loading Trayicon.so : /usr/lib/claws-mail/plugins/trayicon.so: undefined symbol: gtk_status_icon_set_title". I've found what this symbol should do (or so I think) but it doesn't get me anywhere. I would really like to drop claws into the tray.
I have a zyxel dsl (usb) moden, which needs a firmware portion to work, called cxacru-fw.bin.
I have been using this modem using with at least two different slackware distributions, even when the atm drivers were not included in the kernel.
Presently I am using slackware 13.0, with the vmlinuz-huge-smp-2.6.29.6-smp kernel.
I downlowded the 2.6.34 kernel, because I need it for a new webcam, compiled and installed it, and oops! the modem does not work anymore.
I am pretty sure I have configured the kernel correctly; dmesg tells me the modem is recognized by the kernel, as it is with the previous one, but the firmware is not loaded, because the DSL led remains off.

I upgrade my slackware to slackware-current. But, when I look /etc/rc.d/rc.modules, it's still symlink to old kernel. Is this normal? Or i must change the symlink manually?

For some reason, it seems that 13.37 isn't loading the modules I need for cpu frequency scaling. I've edited /etc/rc.d/rc.modules so that CPUFREQ is set to on. On 13.1, this would mean the powernow-k8 module would be loaded for my AMD cpu, and the subsequent "ondemand" governor would be loaded. However, for some reason this isn't being done during the boot process. I've tried it using both the generic kernel and the huge kernel (I'd been using huge for a long time before without realizing it.) Has anything changed in 13.37 with regards to CPU frequency scaling?

I don't care if i use lilo or grub, they are both equally familiar to me, just above nort. i have made attempts at editing the lilo.conf file, which said it had warnings but i didn't know how to view the warnings. It made it so i could select it, but when i did it booted the slack kernel with debian with no modules. get slack, debian and windows all running on my machine the way they're intended?
