OpenSUSE Install :: Bootable USB Ended With "invalid Or Corrupt Kernel Image"?
Jan 5, 2011
I've just purchased HP Mini 5103 with preinstaled SLED, but I want to replace with 11.3. But I have serious problem with booting from USB. Due to problem with BIOS bug/feature, 5103 is unabled to boot using USB with recursive partition (which is created from hybrid openSUSE-11.3-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso either with ImageWriter of dd). When I create bootable USB with syslinux and copying of iso to existing partition, I ended with error "failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drive" (I have tried also both initrdud files, older one failed with "failed to detect USB", newer with "failed to detect CD"). I have also tried to install from full openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso which I have copied to USB using Unetbootin, but with this bootable USB I ended with "invalid or corrupt kernel image".

I finished downloading of "openSUSE-11.1-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso" file. I downloaded it by Opera WB. Then using Nero I burned this file to CD. But there is a problem with boot. Please, make a support to this problem. Maybe file, which is in a site opensuse.org is damaged?

Using NetBootin, I am able to store iso(Open Suse 11.2) image into PenDrive. When I am trying to install from Pen drive, am getting below error message above boot prompt after selecting default option from Unetbootin Screen:
Invalid or corrupt image
Boot:
Actually during booting (after I selecting Install from USB), am Getting NetBootin blue screen in which there are options like "Default", "Linux", "Rescue" and "Memory Check". I tried with linux option and observed screens like select Language and so on. But I didn't tried it fully because am having my own "autoyast" configuration file in xml.
I would like to install suse 11.2 iso as per my config as below:
Boot: linux autoyat=usb///config.xml
Please let me know how to overcome from "Invalid or corrupt image" error

I have a PXE boot setup. It is confirmed working as I can successfully boot other kernels (full SUSE10 distro).However, when I dump the Ubuntu 10.10 kernel onto the PXE server, the client always reports the same error:"invalid or corrupt kernel image"This is with the basic "vmlinuz-2.6.35-24-generic-pae" file.1) I've installed Ubuntu DIRECTLY on the system I was trying to boot from and it works fine (that's where I got the kernel from).2) The file is NOT CORRUPT as I did an md5sum on the PXE server and the client and they have the same hash.3) All files in the base /tftpboot directory with the same ownership/permissions.<Original that works>

I'd like to do a complete backup of my laptop, convert it to ISO, and then create a bootable flash drive with it. I'd like to be able to totally restore, or run (like in Live mode) the image.

the things i've tried:
1. Created an asm bootloader code that calls a c function which just prints a hello message.
2. Compiled both and linked them using LD command using a .ld file available.
Steps followed from http://wiki.osdev.org/Bare_bones.I get a kernel.bin file which is of ELF format. I've set up a tftp server using tftpd32 tool and created the necessary pxelinux.cfg files.
Now how do i create a bootable kernel image out of the elf file. The steps given in the above website to create an image doesn't help.

I've been trying to get a live stick of OpenSUSE 11.2 running and I continuously get a script of "boot: could not find kernel image: gfxboot" running down the screen. Any other version of Linux will run fine off this same USB and I have not seen this error cited anywhere on these forums or Google.

After upgrading Opera browser, by old shortcut for it became invalid. The new was added but the old one stayed and is invalid. I can not remove it through normal means as it doesn't appear in the menu editing window but it's there in the menu.
Is there any way to manually remove items from the menu? Or to rebuild the entire menu?

I was doing some downloads of ISO's to burn & try on another machine. I went to use FF & it wouldn't open. I thought what the heck, I just use it. So in the process of checking I ran it in a terminal & got this error:
Code:
/usr/lib/firefox-3.0.14/run-mozilla.sh: line 131: 2740 Segmentation fault "$prog" ${1+"$@"}
Plus my lvm's were giving me fits so I ran "touch /forcefsck" & it found a bunch of crossed files. In the process of "fixing" I believe that my backup images may have been in that crossed mess as all the 1 of 2 files are "zeroK" files now. I think I have the lvm fixed (for now, as that piece of junk acts up every whipstitch) so how do I get my FF working again?
I tried a "reinstall" with no luck. I found out I have a bigger problem as well. It seems that the "zeroK" file thing got my backups I need to restore my machine to do my homework under my XP & such. Is there a way to recover these files (that I don't know of) or am I screwed like I think? - needless to say, if I have to rebuilt the F10, there won't be any of that LVM junk!

I'm trying to install Fedora 13 VM on my CentOS 5.5 64 bit install following the below link. I used this same process to install a CentOS 5.5 VM just to test the process. Now when I try to follow it making changes for Fedora Im getting an error.[URL] config file:
kernel = "/install/vm/fedora/vmlinuz"
ramdisk = "/install/vm/fedora/initrd.img"
name = "fedora13"
[code]...
In the CentOS link I posted it said to use kernel from the xen directory.Ive found out that the last fedora version that shipped with xen was fedora 8. Does anyone know where I can find a fedora 12/13 xen kernel? Ive searched google for hours and can not find a xen kernel. Actually I'm to the point where I would even use ubuntu or any similar distro if I could find a xen kernel.

Am fairly new to linux and like opensuse distro so far and determine to get it to install on my system along side my default windows OS, iva tried 11.1 and manage to get it working, however my main goal was to set it up as a development environment i.e php,java, i had to remove it later on due to certian circumstance, lastweek ive decide to try gnomelivecd 11.2 but ran into a few errors during the final stages of installment while it was Automatically Creating Configuration, with the help of oldcpu i manage to ran installation again without a black screen but this time at the same instance where the error occurs first then direct me to the failsafe screen and am stuck there ever since. Am now downloading 11.3Mildstone6 which was recommended so what am asking now is help to remove those portions,grub and restore MBR. I have tried repairing it by booting from both a winodws7 DVD and external HD but failed, the error returned was an unexpected error occurs try again. However i can boot into gnome from the live CD and Check System > Boot Loader another error popup stating that
Because Of The Partitioning, The Boot Loader Cannot Be Installed Properly.

After installing the recent kernel update and rebooting my machine I have found a horrible fact, my computer won't boot anymore. It seems my root partition was corrupted, and running fsck on it just sends me through a endless loop of "Ignore Errors {y}:" and "Force overwrite {y}:". I have already tried the use the repair system on the installation DVD but that doesn't do anything, the pop up asking if I want to repair the file system keeps coming up when I click repair.

In order to not post into the wrong forum, I am wondering if an issue related to performing a PXE based NFS install can be posted here, or does it belong in the networking forum? Seems that I've seen both, and I've done several searches using parameters/error messages that I'm seeing and can't seem to find a post that relates.
I have results of "./getinfo.sh network", and other necessary config file info ready to post, but want to make certain on correct forum.

I've a problem running jessie on a XEN supervisor; my running kernel and the installed kernel image differ, because the host system forces the kernel at boot time. Current loaded kernel is
Code:
Select all$ uname -r
3.18.12
But I'm not able to install this version from the standard repository.
Code:
Select all# apt-cache search linux-image
linux-headers-3.16.0-4-amd64 - Header-Dateien für Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64
linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 - Linux 3.16 für 64-Bit-PCs
linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64-dbg - Debugging symbols for Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64
linux-image-amd64 - Linux for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)
linux-image-amd64-dbg - Debugging symbols for Linux amd64 configuration (meta-package)
nvidia-kernel-3.16.0-4-amd64 - NVIDIA binary kernel module for Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64
linux-image-2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 - Linux 2.6.32 for 64-bit PCs, Xen dom0 support
Now I'm facing issues loading kernel modules for iptables, because the module path does not exist. Is there an easy way to install a proper kernel image from the standard repositories?

I have downloaded a bootable DOS iso CD image that I have burnt to CD and can boot from.I need to add more disk checking utilities to the CD iso image.The DOS disk checking utilities are designed to be run from a floppy disk, but my laptop does not have a floppy drive, so CD-ROM is an alternative, if I can remaster the existing iso image file?Can I mount the DOS iso file and then add other programs to it, and then remaster the updated iso, and make a new CD-ROM to boot from with the added tools?

I got a hard drive with an image of an older redhat OS that i need to do some work with. The hard drive isnt bootable but i need to get into it somehow. I am not even close to an expert on these kinds of things, but i will provide the information that ive got.
fdisk -ul
Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 63 149838254 74919096 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 149838255 156296384 3229065 5 Extended
[Code]....
The simplest way the occurs to me to do this is to virtualize the OS on it. So i installed hypervisor from yast, but (i think) it requires an image of the OS to virtualize it, not some partitions on a hard drive. Is there an easy way around this?

I have installed Centos 5.4 and then on top of that i have been installing many softwares over the time ( like pbx system , web console , billing etc.) and now it has come to a quite stable stage. the problem is i have to move this installation to another machine with different config etc. even have to install it on multiple systems. the idea is to create a bootable linux iso of the current machine with all the softwares so i can simply put it in a different machine and make it install and run without much fuss. is creating a linux appliance the only solution ? or is there any way to backup the current machine in an iso format and then install it on another machine? also i would like to make this completely hardware independent.
