I'm unable to boot into a gparted cd to make modifications to my partition table. I've only noticed it since grub took over the duty of boot manager after installing openSUSE 11.3. Are there any other utilities that I can use either from within openSUSE or boot to, to do the same thing?
View 3 RepliesI installed openSUSE 11.3 on my iMac along with "Mac Snow Leopard, Windows 7" to make it a "Triple Boot". But after installing the "GRUB/LILO", it does not chain with the boot loader "REFIT" that I use. Each time I try to boot into "Windows/openSUSE", it shows a message: no boot device found, insert boot disc". So why isn't the "GRUB/LILO" working?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy Toshiba Satellite 5205-S705 laptop with Win XP Home sp3 has a non-working cd drive, is riddled with viruses, and isn't capable of booting to a USB drive. (please no comments about paperweights etc., it's all I have!) I want to install a Linux dual-boot version that is heavy on antivirus scanning support. Since I can't boot to an .iso disk, is there any other way to do this? I can transfer files to it via USB thumbdrive or download via Internet.

The simplest way the occurs to me to do this is to virtualize the OS on it. So i installed hypervisor from yast, but (i think) it requires an image of the OS to virtualize it, not some partitions on a hard drive. Is there an easy way around this?

Note: I just want to make a bootable USB, not to install 11.3 on USB. ( There are many reasons to do that, e.g., USB is much easier to carry, and also reuse later for new versions. ) But it seems there is no instruction to do that.

I have formatted the stick and I have set the boot flag in KDE partitionmanager. Then I have put the .iso on it, using Unetbootin. When I now try to boot it, I get the message

Is maybe the boot flag not set, despite the partitionmanager shows it set? Can I set it also afterwards, after I have installed the .iso on the stick (I tried this already, did not change anything)? Or is there something wrong with the .iso?
Using imagewriter, I was wondering if it's possible to store backup files on it. I have a 8GB usb drive but the imagewriter uses less 2GB to write the iso to it.

and Ubuntu 10.04 now on the NetBook,
but have access to a Windows XP computer too...

I know it can be done, but im not finding how exactly.
What ive tried so far. I've taken VBoxManage terminal tool and converted the VDI to a .img file, and tried to move that to my second physical disk, but it didnt work at all.
After some thinking, I booted to acronis true image within my virtual machine, and cloned the C:/ drive of windows over to my second hard drive. That got me further, but doesn't boot fully. Comes up to windows xp logo, and black screen boot loops.
Ive heard about using vditool to create a .raw file, and then go from there, but im at a loss to find vdi tool
How can i move my virtual machine to a physical, bootable partition on a second drive?
I would like to copy my system into a DVD that I can later use as a bootable disk. Having such a disk could be handy, as it would contain current software upgrades.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to use SuseStudio "preload" and "live" .iso images and the instructions at SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE to create a bootable USB drive.dd_rescue ends after the expected amount of time--without reporting errors--yet "fdisk -l" reports that the device does not contain a valid partition table. The USB key does not boot and appears to have no data.
For what it's worth, my build host is Gentoo on 2.6.39, and I have the latest dd-rescue available. The USB disk is a PNY attache 4GB and works fine with any ISO's supported by unetbootin. The only other bare metal I have here is a netbook running Mepix, so I can't make use of solutions that start with "Boot your existing OpenSuse workstation
Installed ubuntu 10.4 over previous ubuntu on Intel 945G. After installation and reboot the system does not boot: "no bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key".
Installation was done from USB-stick, prepared by UNETBOOTin. I have two HD's, one used for system + storage, another one just for storage. I manually deleted previous system partitions of previous ubuntu install in system HD. The system HD had about 1/3 of free and unallocated space for system partitions, which ubuntu installer created during the installation.
I tried to reinstall grub from bootable USB-stick and it succeeded but it did not help. The system is still not bootable.
I have used ubuntu for years and never happened something like this. Am I missing something or is ubuntu missing something???
HW failure is ofcourse possible but I am quite skeptical about it because Live ubuntu from USB-stick works well.
i had a working multi-boot system, vista on sda1,2; swap sda3; ext=sda4; ubuntu sda5; fedora sda6; data sda7 - i mount the data partition when using all of the linux releases so i don't have to have multiple copies of music, docs, etc. everything has worked fine until yesterday. i tried to install fc12 on sda6, replacing fc11. it required me to format sda6 as ext4. i wasn't sure where i had grub installed, but have a backup of menu.lst in data (sda7), so figured i could let it install to mbr or wherever it wanted to by default. when the install completed and i reboot, i get a black screen and these messages: CLIENT MAC ADDR: 00 19 XX XX XX GUID: XXXXX PXE-E53:

I then thought maybe the problem had something to do with ext4 partition mixed in with ext3's, so i installed mepis on the sda6, and let it write grub to mbr (i think, not really sure where it wrote it). anyway, i still get the identical black screen. no grub type menu or anything. the screen used to show "DHCP for a few seconds", but doesn't anymore after i disconnected the ethernet cable.........
I've just purchased HP Mini 5103 with preinstaled SLED, but I want to replace with 11.3. But I have serious problem with booting from USB. Due to problem with BIOS bug/feature, 5103 is unabled to boot using USB with recursive partition (which is created from hybrid openSUSE-11.3-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso either with ImageWriter of dd). When I create bootable USB with syslinux and copying of iso to existing partition, I ended with error "failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drive" (I have tried also both initrdud files, older one failed with "failed to detect USB", newer with "failed to detect CD"). I have also tried to install from full openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso which I have copied to USB using Unetbootin, but with this bootable USB I ended with "invalid or corrupt kernel image".
View 7 Replies View RelatedBefore I changed to linux, I was on Windows 7. My computer already had 4 different partitions, and would not let me create more. And so, I had to delete one of the partitions. I chose to get rid of the "recovery" partition. I used "Macrium Reflect" to burn a bootable CD of my recovery stuff. Anyways, fast forward to this morning. I got tired of the KDE desktop, and I decided to switch to Gnome. So, I went into windows 7, deleted the three OpenSUSE partitions, and moved the remaining space back to my C: (windows) drive. (don't ask me why :S)
Anyways, so I take a look, after it's done deleting/moving stuff, and I'm told that "no bootable devices detected".. This made me angry, as I am certain I didn't delete any of the windows partitions. So, I thought, I'll just use my recovery disk, because I quite literally, have no personal data on my computer to lose.Except, my recovery disk is not actually bootable. So, then, after screaming in rage, I booted up OpenSUSE from my KDE CD, and was gonna take a look at things in YaST. Except, YaST will not actually open.
Today I installed Fedora (I need it for school), but not everything seems to work fine Before installing Fedora on my Macbook I had a triple booting machine: Mac OSX snow leopard, Windows 7 and Ubuntu. (using rEFIt) All of them where working. Since I installed Fedora on the 4th partition I can only boot Mac OSX. When selecting one of the other OS's it says: "no bootable device insert boot disk and press any key"

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed CentOS 5.5 64-bit on an external WD 500GB HDD. I went through the installation setup, and formatted the external HDD normally. (100M /boot, 250GB /, 248GB /tmp , 2.8GB swap). I also installed grub in the external HDD's MBR. After installation, I could boot up Linux on the same platform (Arrandale). However, as soon as I took it to a different platform such as Atom Pineview D525, it had all kind of problem on Grub, such as Grub Hard Disk Error, or it just hanged on grub loading stage {1.5,2}. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, I would get to grub command prompt, but rarely I could boot up. I would stuck at mounting file system.
I've searching a lot on Google, and people suggested to reinstall Grub, so I tried various method to reinstall Grub, but the same behaviors still exist. I can't guarantee the drive will boot...
I would like to boot the Linux kernel alone and run busybox, not including a GUI.
How can I do that? How can I make a custom bzImage, initrd.img and how can I change the file structures in that images?

I have a Debian installation CD that I can boot from. Now I copied that to an USB-stick using dd
dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/sdc bs=1M
The CD-image should contain a boot-sector and everything else that is needed for booting, yet the USB stick does not boot.
What am I missing - why does the stick not boot?
PS: I am not interested in tips on how to create a bootable stick, I only want to understand why the above method does not work.
creating a bootable floppy from a bootable floppy image on a NON Linux machine I am trying to install dsl (damnsmallLinux) on one of my old Compaq 2000 Deskpro machine having 256RAM and 2 GB hardisk. (which I hope to increase to 8 or 10 GB ...can I use a larger disk capacity??) I have downloaded the floppy bootable image from the website using a machine a fedora OS machine that does not have a floppy drive. I have even converted the image file to an iso file. I can copy this image file or iso file to the Compaq machine but how do I use it as a bootable floppy? OR how do I create a bootable floppy disk from this image?
