Apr 8, 2011Using imagewriter, I was wondering if it's possible to store backup files on it. I have a 8GB usb drive but the imagewriter uses less 2GB to write the iso to it.

OpenSUSE Install :: No Bootable Files Found, Insert Boot Disc"?
Jul 21, 2010I installed openSUSE 11.3 on my iMac along with "Mac Snow Leopard, Windows 7" to make it a "Triple Boot". But after installing the "GRUB/LILO", it does not chain with the boot loader "REFIT" that I use. Each time I try to boot into "Windows/openSUSE", it shows a message: no boot device found, insert boot disc". So why isn't the "GRUB/LILO" working?

May 26, 2011I set up my laptop to dual boot windows and ubuntu 11.4, and it appears to work fine, I can boot into both etc. Now what I'm trying to do is set up a separate partition to store all of my documents, pictures etc so that I can have access to them in both ubunut and windows. So I have this separate partition on my harddrive, formatter as fat32 so both OSs can read and write it, problem is that I'm having lots of trouble auto mounting, accessing and using the files on this partition on ubuntu. I got it to auto mount, but only root has access to modify files, I can open and read but not delete or modify. Also I can't make links to the files on this partition, I was hoping to just link the documents and other folders in my ubuntu home directory to the folders in the new partition, but I can't make links to them. Is there a better way to go at this problem of sharing data between two OSs or any I doing something wrong? If you need any additional info just ask and i'll do my best to get it to you.

Mar 29, 2010I got a hard drive with an image of an older redhat OS that i need to do some work with. The hard drive isnt bootable but i need to get into it somehow. I am not even close to an expert on these kinds of things, but i will provide the information that ive got.

The simplest way the occurs to me to do this is to virtualize the OS on it. So i installed hypervisor from yast, but (i think) it requires an image of the OS to virtualize it, not some partitions on a hard drive. Is there an easy way around this?

Dec 28, 2010I'm unable to boot into a gparted cd to make modifications to my partition table. I've only noticed it since grub took over the duty of boot manager after installing openSUSE 11.3. Are there any other utilities that I can use either from within openSUSE or boot to, to do the same thing?

I have formatted the stick and I have set the boot flag in KDE partitionmanager. Then I have put the .iso on it, using Unetbootin. When I now try to boot it, I get the message

Is maybe the boot flag not set, despite the partitionmanager shows it set? Can I set it also afterwards, after I have installed the .iso on the stick (I tried this already, did not change anything)? Or is there something wrong with the .iso?

Apr 5, 2011In my recently installed openSUSE 11.4 system I am using Kwallet to store all of my private passwords and also those associated with my Kmail accounts. All of these passwords appear correctly in Kwallet, but it seems there is a problem with Kmail accessing them.Whenever I start a new session, Kmail loads first and is followed by Kwallet. When Kmail then tries to do its first mail retrieval it stops and asks for the account password. I type this in and then Kwallet requests its administrator password. Once I type this in, my mail is downloaded and I get no further request for the passwords during that session.
The same thing happens when I attempt to send my first email of the day. I get a Kmail request for the SMTP account password. I've tried changing the Kwallet settings so that it doesn't close when unused for a period,or when the screensaver kicks in, but this (predictably) has no effect. In the Access Control screen, both KDE Wallet Manager and Kontact are shown as 'Always Allow' and I can see no other settings in either Kwallet or Kmail which are relevant to the problem.My guess is that the problem occurs because Kmail starts up ahead of Kwallet and therefore doesn't load the passwords initially. But that may be a red herring as I'm not familiar with the way Kmail and Kwallet interact.

Mar 7, 2009Ive been running VirtualBox with a windows XP installation for some time, on an opensuse 11.0 host for some time. Recently, however ive been having issues with suse, and want to take my virtual XP and make it a primary bootable physical partition, on a second disk
I know it can be done, but im not finding how exactly.
What ive tried so far. I've taken VBoxManage terminal tool and converted the VDI to a .img file, and tried to move that to my second physical disk, but it didnt work at all.
After some thinking, I booted to acronis true image within my virtual machine, and cloned the C:/ drive of windows over to my second hard drive. That got me further, but doesn't boot fully. Comes up to windows xp logo, and black screen boot loops.
Ive heard about using vditool to create a .raw file, and then go from there, but im at a loss to find vdi tool
How can i move my virtual machine to a physical, bootable partition on a second drive?

Jul 3, 2011I am attempting to use SuseStudio "preload" and "live" .iso images and the instructions at SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE to create a bootable USB drive.dd_rescue ends after the expected amount of time--without reporting errors--yet "fdisk -l" reports that the device does not contain a valid partition table. The USB key does not boot and appears to have no data.
For what it's worth, my build host is Gentoo on 2.6.39, and I have the latest dd-rescue available. The USB disk is a PNY attache 4GB and works fine with any ISO's supported by unetbootin. The only other bare metal I have here is a netbook running Mepix, so I can't make use of solutions that start with "Boot your existing OpenSuse workstation

Jan 5, 2011I've just purchased HP Mini 5103 with preinstaled SLED, but I want to replace with 11.3. But I have serious problem with booting from USB. Due to problem with BIOS bug/feature, 5103 is unabled to boot using USB with recursive partition (which is created from hybrid openSUSE-11.3-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso either with ImageWriter of dd). When I create bootable USB with syslinux and copying of iso to existing partition, I ended with error "failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drive" (I have tried also both initrdud files, older one failed with "failed to detect USB", newer with "failed to detect CD"). I have also tried to install from full openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso which I have copied to USB using Unetbootin, but with this bootable USB I ended with "invalid or corrupt kernel image".

Aug 21, 2011Before I changed to linux, I was on Windows 7. My computer already had 4 different partitions, and would not let me create more. And so, I had to delete one of the partitions. I chose to get rid of the "recovery" partition. I used "Macrium Reflect" to burn a bootable CD of my recovery stuff. Anyways, fast forward to this morning. I got tired of the KDE desktop, and I decided to switch to Gnome. So, I went into windows 7, deleted the three OpenSUSE partitions, and moved the remaining space back to my C: (windows) drive. (don't ask me why :S)
Anyways, so I take a look, after it's done deleting/moving stuff, and I'm told that "no bootable devices detected".. This made me angry, as I am certain I didn't delete any of the windows partitions. So, I thought, I'll just use my recovery disk, because I quite literally, have no personal data on my computer to lose.Except, my recovery disk is not actually bootable. So, then, after screaming in rage, I booted up OpenSUSE from my KDE CD, and was gonna take a look at things in YaST. Except, YaST will not actually open.

Jul 26, 2011copy a compact flash card with a form of Linux on it (Found out it was custom version based on Fedora Core 3). The flaky USB card reader seems to have hosed the flash card, it shows up with unknown volume after ejecting the card and reinserting it. My troubleshooting: I have Ubuntu on a flash drive that I used to start all this to read the flash card.
- I tried Disk Utility to reformat the card as Master Boot Record and the volume as ext3 with flag set to Bootable and copied the files using cp in command line.
- I tried ISO Master & mkisofs to make an ISO that the USB thumb drive tools can use, but it wouldn't copy all the files. Looks like symbolic links either were ignored or couldn't find the source file with -f.
- I learned that I might need a boot partition with a boot image, which I think I have in initrd-2.6.14.7img, but I don't know how to do that. Do I also need a swap partition?
My updated goal: using the files from the flash card, make a bootable compact flash card with Fedora Core 3.

Jun 9, 2010creating a bootable floppy from a bootable floppy image on a NON Linux machine I am trying to install dsl (damnsmallLinux) on one of my old Compaq 2000 Deskpro machine having 256RAM and 2 GB hardisk. (which I hope to increase to 8 or 10 GB ...can I use a larger disk capacity??) I have downloaded the floppy bootable image from the website using a machine a fedora OS machine that does not have a floppy drive. I have even converted the image file to an iso file. I can copy this image file or iso file to the Compaq machine but how do I use it as a bootable floppy? OR how do I create a bootable floppy disk from this image?

I haven't tried it yet, but i'm going to. Heres the situation and tell me if I'm crazy.
I have several bootable CDs I use at work to do different things, so I went ahead and made a multi-boot usb stick with the isos on them and everything is golden. When i need something else, I am able to slap the ISO on the usb stick, edit the menu.lst and I'm good to go.
The problem is, for some of our equipment I have a bootable USB stick that I have to use. I tried copying the files on the bootable USB to my multi-boot usb and setup grub to boot it (which admittedly I'm no expert at), but have had no luck.
So now I'm thinking, I'll use dd to copy the bootable USB stick to an iso (using bs=2048) and then do my normal setup with an ISO and maybe it will work.
