I want to install SLES11 with my usb key but I couldn't to make it bootable. Because my server are only a cdrom drive, not dvd... I read the following document : SuSE install from USB drive - openSUSE but it doesn't run! So I can mount/umount the usb and linux could see him:

I am attempting to use SuseStudio "preload" and "live" .iso images and the instructions at SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE to create a bootable USB drive.dd_rescue ends after the expected amount of time--without reporting errors--yet "fdisk -l" reports that the device does not contain a valid partition table. The USB key does not boot and appears to have no data.
For what it's worth, my build host is Gentoo on 2.6.39, and I have the latest dd-rescue available. The USB disk is a PNY attache 4GB and works fine with any ISO's supported by unetbootin. The only other bare metal I have here is a netbook running Mepix, so I can't make use of solutions that start with "Boot your existing OpenSuse workstation

I am trying to make a bootable USB installation
so I can try OpenSUSE 11.2 on my NetBook with no CD/DVD drive.
I've Google'd for hours and tried different things
but I can not make a bootable USB of OpenSUSE 11.2.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 now on my main desktop
and Ubuntu 10.04 now on the NetBook,
but have access to a Windows XP computer too...
I followed the directions on the Ubuntu site and on the forum but am still unable to make one.I used the Universal USB installer (as directed by the Ubuntu download page) and the unetbootin utility as found on a thread in the forums. To ensure that it was not the USB drive, I've used a Kingston drive and a SanDisk drive. Both report "no Operating System found" when attempting to create the drive.I'm using Win7 x64 to create the bootable drive, and ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso as the image.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a customized XP installation disk created for my company. However, my office does not require several of the applications that are installed by default. Also, some configuration settings are incorrect. I have extracted the XP installation files and can perform an install using those files from a running system, but I cannot boot from the CD.
I have tried just about every suggestion I can find on the net except purchasing a third-party burning application to do this. I tried burning both CDs and DVDs using floppy boot images, but XP will not install in a "DOS environment". I've also tried ripping the boot sector directly from a bootable CD/DVD and using that without success. Finally, I ripped ISO images and tried ripping the boot sector from those, also without success. I've also tried various file system type settings in K3b, including Joliet, Linux/Windows, UDF, and DOS compatible, all without success. Surely there must be a way to do this?
PS--I tried posting this to the K3b mailing list first but was rejected, even after creating an account with Sourceforge!? Didn't want to have to submit a support request just to submit a support request.
I downloaded fedora14 iso and burned it straight to a cd but on reboot, it booted from my hd. My bios is set to boot from cd first.Next I extracted the iso to a subdirectory and burned that to a cd, creating a boot disk using the img file in the [BOOT] directory. When I rebooted, I got a cursor in the top left corner of the screen and nothing else

I used Ubuntu and it had it's own utility with nice GUI, it just needed any bootable .ISO file or bootable CD/DVD and it created LiveCD on USB flash drive. I have a small installation problem with openSUSE 11.2 I have read the relevant stuff in the forums for new users. I have downloaded openSUSE-11.2-DVD-i586-iso and verified the file using MD5. I am currently running windows XP (SP1) on a Fujitsu Siemens V1000 laptop andI am trying to install linux from my hard drive and not from a DVD drive.
The path to the downloaded file on my windows partition is: e:/OpenSuse/openSUSE-11.2-DVD-i586.iso I have initialised installation and selected sda6 as the partition where the sourcefile is located. and when prompted for the directory, I typed " /OpenSuse/openSUSE-11.2DVD-i586.iso " The installations then proceeded through to "Initialising Package Manager" upon which I get the following message:

There is an option to try again at which point an additional dialog box appears and I have the opportunity to change things. Other than that, the only option is to cancel and terminate the installation. I've tried the process around 3 times, but if I'm doing the same thing then not surprising I'm getting the same result.

I am trying to add a few additional repositories to SLES 11 64-bit but I can't seem to get them added. I am trying to add Index of /repositories/server:/database but I get the error "Unable to create repository from [URL]... Try again? So I browsed that repository and then tried to add Index of /repositories/server:/database/SLE_11 but still got the error message with this new URL listed instead. I tried just the 11.2 repository and it worked - Index of /distribution/11.2/repo/oss/suse.
How or what do I need to do in order to get Index of /repositories/server:/database added to my repository?

I'd like to create a Live Usb Stick to test it and install it if I like it but it doesn't seem to work.
I tried the website method, using "Win32DiskImager.exe" but the program doesn't work for me (WinXP) : it looks like it's writing but when the "Done" message is prompted, I'm unable to access the usb key, Windows says it's not formatted. That doesn't look right...
I tried with LinuxLive Usb Creator but the boot process fails and Universal-Usb-Installer doesn't offer an Opensuse option.
Is there another way to install the distribution on an USB stick ? I could still try through Ubuntu but that would be quite surrealistic.
I've got 3 extra disks on OpenSuse 11.2 - all the same size. I've created a partition on all of them as type 0xFD. If I then try and add raid in yast I get "There are not enough suitable unused devices to create a RAID."

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create a bootable install of Ubuntu 10.04 which boots off an 8GB Kingston DataTraveler USB stick. I used the latest Universal USB installer from pendrivelinux to install it, and I used the I386 ISO of Ubuntu 10.04. It successfully installed to the USB stick and I enabled 4GB of persistence. However, when I put it into any machine it gives me the following message:

I got a hard drive with an image of an older redhat OS that i need to do some work with. The hard drive isnt bootable but i need to get into it somehow. I am not even close to an expert on these kinds of things, but i will provide the information that ive got.

The simplest way the occurs to me to do this is to virtualize the OS on it. So i installed hypervisor from yast, but (i think) it requires an image of the OS to virtualize it, not some partitions on a hard drive. Is there an easy way around this?
I'm unable to boot into a gparted cd to make modifications to my partition table. I've only noticed it since grub took over the duty of boot manager after installing openSUSE 11.3. Are there any other utilities that I can use either from within openSUSE or boot to, to do the same thing?

I have formatted the stick and I have set the boot flag in KDE partitionmanager. Then I have put the .iso on it, using Unetbootin. When I now try to boot it, I get the message

Using imagewriter, I was wondering if it's possible to store backup files on it. I have a 8GB usb drive but the imagewriter uses less 2GB to write the iso to it.

What ive tried so far. I've taken VBoxManage terminal tool and converted the VDI to a .img file, and tried to move that to my second physical disk, but it didnt work at all.
After some thinking, I booted to acronis true image within my virtual machine, and cloned the C:/ drive of windows over to my second hard drive. That got me further, but doesn't boot fully. Comes up to windows xp logo, and black screen boot loops.
Ive heard about using vditool to create a .raw file, and then go from there, but im at a loss to find vdi tool
How can i move my virtual machine to a physical, bootable partition on a second drive?
I would like to copy my system into a DVD that I can later use as a bootable disk. Having such a disk could be handy, as it would contain current software upgrades.

The ISO image is PelicanHPC, a Debian-live based clustering distro, to create a home cluster with some computers just to try how it works.I have tried several ways of creating the bootable USB.
* Unetbootin
The Unetbootin loader is showing Default but when I press ENTER it will only show the same loader, not loading the kernel.
* dd and cp
I have tried dd standalone, and also as I could see in other websites, using isohybrid first on the ISO. I have tried setting/not setting as bootable partition /dev/sdb1 in fdisk. Using default bs and bs=4M too, without success.
I have tried running cp isoimage.iso /dev/sdb1, without success booting.
Then I tried booting the ISO image without USB from the local hard disk.
* grub-imageboot
Adding the ISO image to /boot/images and then running update-grub, but then, it won't boot, it keeps loading for a long time, 15 minutes, showing the splash image of the default grub (Debian's bootloader). I could read in the docs that it does not boot every ISO images.
* adding manually a menu entry to GRUB
I have created a loopback to the iso file and then loading the kernel (linux and initrd.img). This way, it loaded correctly, but when loading the system, an error message was displayed (unable to mount aufs on /root: No such directory) then kernel panic. A shell is prompted, if I do ls, it will display several directories, /root among them.

PelicanHPC is not too old distro, it dates from late 2013.Booting the ISO in a QEMU virtual machine boots and functions correctly, I even created a new virtual machine that boots from PXE and add a node to the master system.
I have a iMac G5 and an eeepc 1000 netbook, and I would like install Fedora 12/13 on it. I have downloaded the Fedora-12-DVD.iso, now that .iso is on my Mac, and I would like to create a bootable usb(8GB) on Mac using the iso file. I did find a few instructions on how to do this in Mac OS X [URL] however, they were concerned with .img files. If I am to expand the iso file I can see several .img files in the img folder and a few in other folder, which do I choose? The obvious choice seemed to be install.iso but it was only 166MB so I thought the whole system could not, possibly be fitted into such a file.

I have downloaded a bootable DOS iso CD image that I have burnt to CD and can boot from.I need to add more disk checking utilities to the CD iso image.The DOS disk checking utilities are designed to be run from a floppy disk, but my laptop does not have a floppy drive, so CD-ROM is an alternative, if I can remaster the existing iso image file?Can I mount the DOS iso file and then add other programs to it, and then remaster the updated iso, and make a new CD-ROM to boot from with the added tools?

First, I downloaded F13 x86-64 the day of the release, checked the sha256sum against the CHECKSUM file (it passed), and burned a DVD. I see 5 folders and 10 files on it, as expected.I restart, and my PC (AMD Phenom 9600 quad, Gigabyte S Series GA MA69G-S3H motherboard) does not boot from the DVD, but from the hard drive.So I get into the bios, check to make sure that the boot order is correct (it is) and try again. No joy.
Next, I assume I screwed up, had a bad burn, down load and burn again, checking everything. Still won't boot from DVD. Try getting the ISO from torrents, (checking sha256sum all the while), burn my 3rd DVD (using Brasero this time) and - same problem.Now I assume I have a hardware problem, and for grins, put in the F12 ISO DVD. It boots from there just fine.So I don't have a hardware problem, and I seem to have 3 good burns, but it's not recognized as a bootable DVD.
