how to regain some type of display. I was trying to get a printer online. The printer was recognized but would not print. I went away from the machine for a few hours and when I came back I had a blank screen. I turned the machine off but nothing comes back up. All key strokes fail to give me anything.

I followed the upgrade directions, found here, precisely. However, I am still experiencing some unusual problems, some I think I have resolved, but others are leaving me puzzled.
Before I get to far into this, my working knowledge of *NIX platforms is decent, but I am no where close to expert or advanced.
Problem 1 - KDE Profiles (resolved)
The first problem I experienced was that my KDE profiles were all screwed up, buttons would not work, desktop icons were missing, applications would not start or would show horrid graphics, and the list goes on. Having run through a similar problem with FreeBSD, I decided to simply move my ~/.kde4 to ~/.kde4.orig and then do a forced reinstall of KDE4. This seems to have resolved the issue, I just have to recreate my profile, which should be relatively simple.
Problem 2 - Sound Driver
Shortly after my upgrade, I did have sound, but I had lost control of the volume. This is somewhat expected as with each Kernel update of Linux, I found I had to reinstall the sound drivers, Creative X-Fi. This never presented a problem as it was a 30 second process and very simple to perform (there were three commands, four if you include 'su -'). This time, I ended up running into an error, seen below:

Problem 3 - VMware
Similar to the sound card, each time a new Kernel patch is applied, I have to recompile VMware Workstation 6.5 for it to work again. This is even simpler than the sound drivers as all I do is start VMware and it automatically recompiles. Now, when I go to start it, I receive the two following errors:

Problem 4 - Kernel...
The previous two problems seem to be related to some underlying kernel issue that I have yet to be able to resolve. I have barely been able to change the error messages. So far I have forced a reinstall of almost everything kernel related that was already installed, plus I installed quite a few *-devel packages. I reinstalled 'make' and 'gcc' for good measure, but I am not getting anywhere.
fter booting into openSUSE 11.4 kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5-default, I cannot move the mouse cursor at all. Its light went off. I have MS Netbook Optical Mouse 3000. My Desktop has AMD Athlon X2 CPU.I can use the mouse with openSUSE 12.1 M2, Windows 7 and other distros in the same machine but somehow cannot with openSUSE 11.4
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed KDE (I was using GNOME). After that, I found for gnome applications, KDE font settings is applied even when I log in using GNOME. Whatever I do in appearance-fonts, all gnome applications follow the settings from KDE Personal Settings. (Application Appearance -> Fonts)
I lost all the subpixel hinting, and I finally just found out that if I set it in KDE Personal Settings it actually affects gnome applications. (I'm in GNOME now)
I feel little silly asking this, I accidently removed from my gnome panel my internet connection, volume control and battery indicator on F11. how can I add this back. It does not show up in the add to panel menu and the applications do not give you back the default feel.

- in init 3 : zypper cc && zypper ref && zypper up does not work : after reboot using "shutdown -r now" the pc is frozen, with the green screen and white lizard (no access to keyboard, nor to grub options), ctrl+ alt+ f1 is ko for example.
- in init 3 and only with 3 repos (oss, non-oss, and update of 11.4) a zypper dup works but a bug with mozilla firefox 4 brading opensuse which is ko . we continued , can one package break down a zypper dup ? ( same ko result : after reboot usinf shutdown -r now the pc is frozen with the green screen and white lizard (no access to keyboard, nor to grub options) )
Just upgraded to 11.3 from the terminal. There were a few hiccups, but it said to run "zypper verify," and it downloaded a few files and finished. When I rebooted, the graphics were fine, but the arrow in the middle of the screen is frozen. I can move the mouse till I get carpal tunnel, but the arrow ain't gion' nowhere. So how do I "unfreeze" my mouse? (Besides knitting it a sweater!) I'm hoping for a "ctrl/f2", and that aterminal can be opened that way, with a command to wake up the mouse dameon.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a repeatable and annoying problem that seems to be connected with the graphics card driver of nvidea. I had another card before (7900 card) and I have after having had a malfunction now a nvidea 430. Mainboard Gygabyte with AMD 790 Chipset, GB Ram. The opensuse system is fully patched and updated, newest kernel but the same error occurred with another graphic card and with the precedent kernel and with the precedent nvidia video driver.
Now, the problem is as follows:

After the TV is shut down and restored the mouse cursor is "frozen":The old mouse image stays where it isHowever, the mouse IS active, in that you can (blindly) move the mouse, see it mouse-over widgets, and activate them - there's just no visible cursor where the hotspot is.Hardware is ATI chipset (can't remember which, offhand, but it's only a year or two old), running AMD driver, with a HDMI link to the TV.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn inspection I find that my collection of video files is a mixture of .flv and .mp4 formats. The latter play OK on my A110 network media player but the latter do not. There is no sound from either but I think that is another problem as VLC works well on all of them.
My question assuming I cannot get the media player to play .flv files is should I convert to mp4 and will the HD files suffer as a result? If it is OK to convert, which program to use. My system is openSUSE 11.4 with KDE desktop.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS onto a blank hard drive with the prospective goal of running WoW on it. I installed Wine and all my security updates and restarted; everything worked fine, but I noticed that the system was suggesting that I get some "proprietary" drivers for my HD Radeon 4550 card. I proceeded to install them and was told that the the OS needed to restart to make the changes. I clicked the close button, restarted from the menu in the top-right hand corner, and when my machine started back up -bam!- frozen on the ubuntu splash screen.
I'm reinstalling now (after trying everything I could think of) and I just want to know how the hell this happened, and how I can avoid it in the future. I'm trying to make the switch from Linux to Windows, but this isn't making it any easier. Also: is there any way I can set up ubuntu to look and interface like a windows clone.
After I manually installed multimedia codecs, like w32codecall, I got Linux to play movies and I also got thumbnail previews of them in Dolphin. However, I noticed that recently Dolphin doesn't display my thumbnails anymore. I don't quite recall whether the any video player could use my installed codecs, at least xine works. The only thing that could have caused that is actually the automatic system updates I received. I still have my multimedia codecs installed, but Dolphin doesn't show the movie previews anymore.

All the text screens look fine, but when it loads the graphic installer, the video gets corrupted, but i have a mouse, but a few seconds later it freezes and hangs, and I can't do anything. Nothing loads. This happens with the livecd's as well.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSuddenly, my windows have no borders, and I have little control of them -- no moving, minimizing, or maximizing. I can't access these functions because there is no bar at the top, but they also don't respond to pressing the Alt key. My mouse cursor is the generic "X" that XWindows starts with.
The obvious solution is to change my settings, but I can't: when I try to open window manager settings, the disk spins a little but nothing shows up.
Another solution would be to try a different window manager, but this fails on a different problem that I have been having for some time. If I log out and then click on my user name to log back in, nothing happens -- I do not get a password box, just the same user selector that I started with. I use Xfce and I don't know how to switch.
I accidentally removed the volume control icon on the top panel of my desktop. How do I get it back. I'm on 10.04 if that matters.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to install 11.2 from DVD, the user information I entered at the beginning of the install gets lost. I get to the Automatic Configuration step at the end of the install where the computer needs to reboot, and it asks for my user ID and password (it shouldn't do that). It won't accept the user I created (always says login failed), but it will accept root. That really doesn't matter, because the Automatic Configuration step has done anything, and I have a busted install. I've tried the install 4 or 5 times, but it is always the same problem. I eventually reinstalled 11.1 without any problem (though I did have to click Use Entire Disk on the partition section so it would delete the ext4 partitions created by the 11.2 install and create ext3 partitions).

It sucks big time, because I can't control my Audio when ever I need to mute it or upper/lower it through my keyboard fastly when needed. having to manually opening an application to be able to change/control the Audio volume is a huge hassle for me

This has been bugging me for a few weeks now all of a sudden i lost my email icon chat etc and the volume icon in the top notification area.
i have tried deleting and re adding the notification area back but they are still missing.
also sometime when i boot up i loose my minimize and close window icons on the windows???

A couple of things i noticed while trying the live CD first is that the file manager recognized my NTFS partitions and after I installed I expected it to do the same. Also, while installing I thought I selected a secure logon with username & password. After installation it boots right into the desktop GUI. I haven't had a lot of time playing with OpenSuse yet and I have browsed through some threads and I couldn't find a way to configure a secure logon and do I have to mount the Windows partitions in the Command Line or is there a tool I can use in the control center?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering if it's possible to control a TTY on a remote machine via SSH. I'm aware of ssh's -t option, but it doesn't seem to do what I want. Basically, I'm thinking in terms of VNC-like operation, where the remote user and local user see the same thing, only instead of a GUI, they both see TTY1 (or 2, or etc). Is that doable, or no?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't get my usual gui now. I had videocard problems which I was attempting to solve by uninstalling the proprietary ATI driver. While doing this the card failed completely and I had nothing on the screen at all. So I had to shut it down by killing the power. I now have a new video card in the machine but I've lost KDE. I'm not sure how it happened but when I tried to log in I was presented with the login screen one usually gets when you choose to log out of your account after a normal boot up using, in my case, KDE.
Logging in normally in that screen as my usual user didn't work. It simply went back to the login screen after a few seconds. But this screen also gives you various options to log in that aren't KDE and I chose one of those. I don't remember which. It sort of worked. I get a small cli window in the upper left corner of the screen. However, I can start programs from there, including Firefox, which I'm using to post this. I have the gui within those programs. How do I get my usual KDE gui back? I'm using 11.3 and an ati 4350 card.
clean install of 11.3-64 on my 64 bit intel box. have had desktop lockup a few times and did a ctr/alt/bs to reboot the gui. lately, I right clicked on the bar at the bottom of the screen and went to properties. then clicked on "left" for bar position and bar totally disappeared. when I move the cursor all around the screen even on the edges and hit the left mouse button (thought that would bring it back) nothing happens
