OpenSUSE Install :: Combination Of Settings Which May Make It Run Better?
Jun 28, 2011
attempting to reinstall 11.3, my system always freezes up at different points. Always during actual installation (not setup). Burned an 11.4 disc and the same happens. First was a DVD, but the new one is a CD, and now with the new version, a little dialogue comes up at the start to tell me 1 gig of RAM may not be enough. Well, it always was before. Is there a certain combination of settings which may make it run better? Also, a live session works fine.

Is there a way I can save system settings and have yast revert to a config file in case I ever need to reinstall the system again? I hate having to configure the firewall, runlevels, samba shares, samba workgroup, apparmor, and all the other junk after every install. It's not like I install often, but should suse 11.5 or 12 roll out, I'd like it to be a snappy upgrade.

I just erased WinXp and installed Ubuntu on old laptop. I intend to use it later ot connect to public Wi-Fi. Do i need to install a firewall GUI and make any special settings? I didn't encrypt home folder during installation. I probably should have done it. But i am already low on system resources (224MB ram, 1.2Ghz CPU). Would that use up any additional resources? Would it make computer run slower? Can i still encrypt the home folder after i installed the system?

That was released in October 2008, superseded in March 2009, and the current release is 1.4.3. It also doesn't work together with Python, but that's a more esoteric issue. Both of them are too clever by half, and the combination breaks the library loading mechanism. That's an old issue, with an old fix - though I haven't yet checked my rebuild, so there may be more than one problem.

I recently installed 11.3 from the network install CD and I wanted to configure GRUB to have a boot password. I went into the necessary options and enabled the password and saved. I went back in to confirm it stuck, and the password option was unchecked and the password was blanked.I re-entered the information and just carried on. The installation summary didn't mention any password being applied to GRUB, but I just kept on going. Sure enough, there is no password on boot with GRUB now.I tried this over multiple installs in the past couple days, as well as with the 11.2 network install CD, and on no install was the password option honoured

I installed 11.3 as a "fresh" install (not upgrade) into a second partition, so now I have both my current 11.2 and the new 11.3 as a dual boot.
I'd like to migrate my old KDE (4.4.3) settings to the new 11.3 (KDE 4.4.4) installation, most importantly KMail and its archived mail folders. My plan was to copy the kmailrc file from the ~/.kde4/share/config/ folder and overwrite the default kmailrc that's on 11.3 and then replace the ENTIRE ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail/mail/ folder on 11.3 with the one on 11.2 (including the hidden files and folders).
My questions are:
1. would this work, or am I missing other files and folders.
2. Would I be better off just copying the entire ~/.kde4 folder from 11.2 partition to 11.3?

Not sure if this is correct place to ask this but here go:I have the following setup today:
sda openSUSE 11.2
sdb openSUSE 11.4 ms3
sdc openSUSE 11.3 (production)
sdb is my test environment. sda is still around since its the only way I can power down my system. 11.3 and 11.4 hang on power down. (Another subject) I have the 11.4 ms4 dvd made and I want to install to sdb without carrying over any of the settings. In the past I've just formatted and installed but the settings for the user and root were saved. Want to do a total fresh install. Reason for not carrying over setting is problems with Akonadi not starting (tried all the trouble shooting tips), and Vbox freezing keyboard and mouse when installing XP.

I am extremely disappointed in this 11.3 release. openSUSE had a system that worked. I never had a major problem with the Nvidea video drivers before this release. When I did have a problem with the drivers (usually because Nvidia screwed up) I was able to easily use "The hard way" to install the drivers and all was good. But now the system is so screwed up that the drivers wont install. I can't find a working Saxx2 anywhere. nvidia-settings won't install from rpm. What the hell is going on? This release should have been held up until this garbage was fixed. Novvaeu (sp?) won't work for some of the programs I want to run.
I probably changed so much stuff that I bet my system won't boot now. Oh and what happened to the lack of repair software on the install disk? For two versions now the only repair option we have had is the command line. That's great if you use those tools on a regular or semi regular basis.

My default display (DF-770 monitor) comes up something like 1280x960. In the "configure desktop" > display I set the display to 1152x864@75Hz. Next I accept the setting after the preview. When I reboot, the display is back to 1280. Do I have to manually edit some file to make my selection permanent?
Sysconfig editor has a variable that starts off with 1024x768, but that doesn't seem to be my problem, so I didn't mess with it. How do I get my display preferences saved?

The default Gnome desktop now has a 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz which fit my monitor but is a little too big (or at least the font sizes are too small). I would like to switch to a lower resolution. I don't find anywhere in Yast how to configure the monitor settings. No more sax2, no more /etc/X11/xorg.conf? What does replace them?
I mean, where can I set which monitor I"m using (Targa TM4896-1), what are the screen resolutions supported, if I want hardware 3D acceleration (or not), if I want to use dualhead (Matrox G400 DH)?

I have no clue why KDE is doing this, but whenever I reboot the system, the resolution resets to 1024x768. I really need to stop it from doing this. Also, Sax2 doesn't seem to be working and there is no xorg.conf file that I can see of.

I had a machine with 11.3, and tested 11.4 live CD. It looked good, network worked and so did compiz. But then I installed, and I can't see any wireless networks, the screen flickers and compis doesn't work. Is there any way to simple reset all settings so that they become the live-cd settings?

After I login my desktop preferences are not loaded. If I try to change them (Control cneter-> apparence) I get a message that says: Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with DBus, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager. The first lines of .xsession-errors show:

SuSe 11.4 install problem. I've installed 11.4 and have the following sequence of events
Power on - dell hardware boot options
Grub
Choice of
Standard suse boot
Safe mode
Windows 1
Windows 2
Choosing standard goes through a boot sequence but leaves me with a invalid screen setting with a scrambled display. Are there any options I can provide grub with that will enable me to boot and trouble shoot the system?
Grub has
vga = 0x348
The graphics are
NVidia geforce 6150se
Monitor
Dell 22 inch widescreen
SuSE 11.1 worked fine and the windows side works fine.

I have a triboot windows suse 11.3 stable and suse 11.3 factory pc, I would like to share the browsers and email settings between the suse stable and factory, I succeed with thunderbird and firefox moving the /home/.thunderbird and /home/.mozilla in an ext3 shared partition and linking these in the respecive /homes, I found that there isn't a /home/.chromium folder, I found probably /usr/lib64/chromium could be the same as /home/.mozilla for firefox, but I don't know if is secure or can damage my system to move this in a ext3 partition and then link this to the respective /usr/lib64/chromium, /usr/lib64/chromium has root owner, root group, visible and modifiable for root and only visible for group and other.

I was able to install opensuse 11.2 wihtout problems from LiveCD. After installation I noticed there is a cross in Network Connection. But in Live CD it's not there. I opended Network Manager and setp up my DSL Pppoe connecton and it's working. Hope this behaviour is normal ?I am little confused regarding software update. In Yast control centre:
1. Software repositories I will not have to touch default is ok ?
2. Just select Online Update and all the updates will be taken care
3. Is there any settings to avoid unnecessary software downloads

Is this there anything I can do to get settings/changes I make to stay?

something odd I've noticed with 11.3 on my laptop--if I adjust my resolution through the Monitor applet in the Control Center or if I make changes to my Touchpad settings through the Control Center, the changes are lost when I log into my laptop. Do you think I botched an installation?
I've tried to determine what actual files are affected via the two applets with the thought that maybe I don't have the necessary permissions on them or that I can throw a bandaid on it with a start-up task to overwrite them. Alas, I've got nuthin'

the solution of my monitor is much to small. So I tried to find out, where I can change the settings of my graphic card and monitor. Unfortunately opensuse only gives me the possibility to change it up to 600x800, which is by far too small. So I thought maybe I need to install a driver... so... there I am ... having question marks around my head and wondering how to install a graphics card driver on my opensuse 11.3.???
And where to find the right ones?
My graphic card is a Matrox Mystique (no 220 or anything else!!). I checked the website of Matrix to find my drivers, but it tells me that there is no driver planned for linux. Matrox Graphics - Support - Latest Matrox drivers for legacy products But I guess I am not the only person in the world who uses this graphic card on linux, so there must be a way to make it work!!

What the heck do I do now? 2 times I've re-installed suse 11.2 and this is what I get every time it tries the first update. I just had a perfectly fine working version of 11.2 that was installed using the network install just 3 days ago but I messed up and couldn't access mySql. Today I blew it away thinking I'd just start over and now it doesn't work. I installed it exactly the same as 2 days ago, whats changed? How do I fix this? I can't access the software repository settings in yast, nothing happens when I try to start it.
