General :: Can't Just Copy A Bootable CD To USB Drive And Boot From It

I would like to understand the following:
I have a Debian installation CD that I can boot from. Now I copied that to an USB-stick using dd
dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/sdc bs=1M
The CD-image should contain a boot-sector and everything else that is needed for booting, yet the USB stick does not boot.
What am I missing - why does the stick not boot?
PS: I am not interested in tips on how to create a bootable stick, I only want to understand why the above method does not work.

If I dd copy a bootable usb drive to an iso will the iso be bootable?
I haven't tried it yet, but i'm going to. Heres the situation and tell me if I'm crazy.
I have several bootable CDs I use at work to do different things, so I went ahead and made a multi-boot usb stick with the isos on them and everything is golden. When i need something else, I am able to slap the ISO on the usb stick, edit the menu.lst and I'm good to go.
The problem is, for some of our equipment I have a bootable USB stick that I have to use. I tried copying the files on the bootable USB to my multi-boot usb and setup grub to boot it (which admittedly I'm no expert at), but have had no luck.
So now I'm thinking, I'll use dd to copy the bootable USB stick to an iso (using bs=2048) and then do my normal setup with an ISO and maybe it will work.

They filled up the hdd and need more space. I first considered just adding a slave drive, but thought it might be better just to copy all of the content from the old drive to the new drive. Then, make the new drive as the master and the old as a backed up copy slave drive.

My Toshiba Satellite 5205-S705 laptop with Win XP Home sp3 has a non-working cd drive, is riddled with viruses, and isn't capable of booting to a USB drive. (please no comments about paperweights etc., it's all I have!) I want to install a Linux dual-boot version that is heavy on antivirus scanning support. Since I can't boot to an .iso disk, is there any other way to do this? I can transfer files to it via USB thumbdrive or download via Internet.

I have a 16GB Ubuntu Webserver running on a Transcend SMART CF chip (Yes I know all the reasons not to). I want to move that entire system (OS, Files and structure) to an external bootable HD that will probably be closer to 100GB. What's the easiest way to do this and have it be plug and play. By which I mean I can then plug the drive into a new system and boot it up just as it was running on the old system.

copy a compact flash card with a form of Linux on it (Found out it was custom version based on Fedora Core 3). The flaky USB card reader seems to have hosed the flash card, it shows up with unknown volume after ejecting the card and reinserting it. My troubleshooting: I have Ubuntu on a flash drive that I used to start all this to read the flash card.
- I tried Disk Utility to reformat the card as Master Boot Record and the volume as ext3 with flag set to Bootable and copied the files using cp in command line.
- I tried ISO Master & mkisofs to make an ISO that the USB thumb drive tools can use, but it wouldn't copy all the files. Looks like symbolic links either were ignored or couldn't find the source file with -f.
- I learned that I might need a boot partition with a boot image, which I think I have in initrd-2.6.14.7img, but I don't know how to do that. Do I also need a swap partition?
My updated goal: using the files from the flash card, make a bootable compact flash card with Fedora Core 3.

System was working reliably. Moved components into a new case. Now system will not boot. Either gives error that the disk is not bootable or displays the motherboard configuration screen.
I am able to boot Debian with a USB drive and have attempted fixes in "rescue mode".
I confirmed that the system is booting to EFI mode.
I have tried re-installing the grub-efi package and re-creating the Grub config file with update-grub.
When re-installing Grub I receive "Discarding improperly nested partition ..." warnings but the installation succeeds. I have searched this warning message and the forums seem to say that it can be ignored.
I have tried re-setting the motherboard NVRAM using the jumper block.
The computer shows "debian" as a boot choice in addition to the usual raw drive model listing. However, neither of the choices will boot successfully.

I am trying to install Linux (the distros I have attempted it with are Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu and Mint) on a USB drive and make it work like a removable hard drive, keeping programs and settings. I tried it manually at first, partitioning the drive with Fedora's "Disk Utility" and dd'ing a Fedora 13 iso over. I should note here that I have definitely configured the BIOS correctly, enabled booting from removable media and set it as the default with all other devices disabled, but that I have never actually booted from USB before with this motherboard. On bootup I got

I couldn't find much about what LiveOS actually means and why I need it to create a bootable USB, so if anyone could tell me more about this that would be great. Is this (the .img files) the only thing distinguishing a "Live" OS from a non-Live one? I looked in my Ubuntu live CD and there was no such directory, but it works perfectly well. In case it would make a difference, the stick is 8GB and branded duracell, not sure what manufacturer it is.

I have Orace linux .iso's on a memory stick. I could burn them to CD's and install linux from the CDs. However I would rather not waste 5 CDs and just install from the memory stick. How can I do that? How do I make the memory stick bootable? I did try changing the boot options but I could find the right one.

I want to install Ubuntu to a USB Flash drive (so I have my Desktop everywhere and can customize it as I want). I'm still choosing what's the best filesystem for the USB; Ext2 with no journaling or Ext4 with journaling but performance increase? I know that journaling will probably reduce the life of the USB flash drive dramatically, so is Ext2 the obvious choice? Or is it a bad idea to install Linux (Ubuntu probably) on a USB Flash drive? I tried running a live CD from the USB drive, but it wasn't very customizable - which is the point of carrying my OS with me.

When I set "USB flash drive" as a first bootable device in BIOS, I get SYSLINUX "boot:" prompt and it loads both "vmlinuz" and "initrd.gz", but finally I end up in BusyBox prompt and following message:

I am converting over to linux ubuntu 11.04, and I have used it for a week, love it. I installed an old 30gb HDD in order to install it ubuntu to try it out. Now I want to erase my primary windows XP drive and reformat to ext4, just like linux. Is there any prog or method that will make a perfect copy of what I have on my current drive ubuntu and put it on the newly formatted drive primary, so that it can boot ubuntu will all of the stuff I have on it right now?

I have downloaded the DVD iso for Fedora 14, however, I do not want to burn a DVD for installation, and would like to be able to perform the upgrade from a USB flash drive. Ive installed and have up and perfect a copy of ubuntu, thing is i need windows for recording and xna, i want to make a installer from usb as i havent one cd or dvd i can use for installing and all the quick fixes seem to be either in linux to make a linux usb installer, in windows to make a linux usb installer, or windows to make a windows installer, but i cant seem to find one for linux to make a windows installer, as in i would like a linux program to create a bootable usb of windows of a iso i already have.

I have two HDDs in computer, one with ntfs and windows on it and second with btrfs. I want to get data on that btrfs disk. I boot with bootable USB stick with ubuntu on it but I found out that I cannot copy anzthing. I dont have permissions. How to change that. I am logged in as nobody here in USB stick, and files are probably locked as mz previous username when I create them.

I just booted one of my computers from a usb drive I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to, and when I booted it up on that computer, it worked fine. Then, when I powered down the computer and booted it back up to the main hard drive, it booted to the same that my flash drive was running, but my flash drive was not plugged in!! How is this possible? Did it copy itself over my other operating system? There is no trace of it. By the way, that, too, was ubuntu 10.04.

I've installed CentOS 5.5 64-bit on an external WD 500GB HDD. I went through the installation setup, and formatted the external HDD normally. (100M /boot, 250GB /, 248GB /tmp , 2.8GB swap). I also installed grub in the external HDD's MBR. After installation, I could boot up Linux on the same platform (Arrandale). However, as soon as I took it to a different platform such as Atom Pineview D525, it had all kind of problem on Grub, such as Grub Hard Disk Error, or it just hanged on grub loading stage {1.5,2}. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, I would get to grub command prompt, but rarely I could boot up. I would stuck at mounting file system.
I've searching a lot on Google, and people suggested to reinstall Grub, so I tried various method to reinstall Grub, but the same behaviors still exist. I can't guarantee the drive will boot...

Old habits die hard...I wanted to run a DOS program and the most expedient way was to copy it to a bootable floppy. Problem one, floppy isn't mounted by default. Ok, so I mounted it, then attempted the copy. The copy failed almost immediately with an error message. I rebooted into ubuntu, did the same thing, and it worked.
