Im finally deleting vista from my disk, but as I am game addict I will re-install it afterwards just for games. Now I assume that will overwrite GRUB, so how do I restore boot record and at same time keep my grub config?
View 5 RepliesA few days ago I installed my first Linux product, which is Debian 6.0, and I installed the GRUB booting device on my main boot record, as it was suggested that it was a harmless step to take. Unfortunately, some quirk in my system made GRUB believe that I had XP when in fact I have Vista, so the options I have now are to boot Debian or to boot XP which is not on my computer. In other words, I have to get rid of GRUB now, but I'm realizing that he's not such an easy customer to kick out. I have moved my Linux installation to another drive, but the old GRUB always stays in place, and my Vista is stuck there frozen for eternity. So after considering all kinds of possibilities, I have come to the conclusion that the easiest way to restore my original boot record would probably be to find its backup copy that I assume the installation program made, and to copy it back into the right address at the beginning of the disk. I don't have the Vista recovery CD, so I really have to do this manually. So now my questions are these: did the installation program make a copy of the boot track, and if so, where did he put it and under what name, and finally, what command can I use from within the Debian terminal, which is now my only tool left, to copy the content of thesaid file into the first 512 bytes of the hard drive? I know that would be a simple matter for any serious geek, I guess I must be a little rusty. Anybody feel up to it?

I launched a live CD on USB but cannot restore Grub; the only way is to reinstall the KDE. Then it boots but does not show Gnome 3. Why the installer does not take into account both OS?
View 8 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to simply remove grub? Does GRUB reside in a specific partition? Do I have to just delete the partition that has GRUB on it?The way my bootable partitions work is something like this.
1)Installed Vista
2)Installed Ubuntu
3)Thought I removed GRUB
4)Put in new HDD(1) and installed Win7 onto it
5)Put in another new HDD(2) and put another Win7 onto that (but I disconnected every other HDD so that the bootloader would be written onto the new HDD(2). When I have all my HDD's plugged in now, I get a GRUB load error (I think it's 21).
Basically, I used a USB stick to run ubuntu 9.10 live, then tried to install to an external 500gb HDD connected with a Sharkoon Drivelink USB adaptor. The installation went fine, but I get a GRUB error 21 when booting a lot of the time. I figure this is due to the way in which the drive is connected. I am a complete noob, and I want to just ove GRUB completely and restore my Vista bootloader. Unfortunately, I do not have an installation disk as my laptop didn't come with one, and none of the others I have other PC's are the same version (home premium 32-bit).If you know of a way to fix the GRUB issue/sso I can use the external drive I would love to hear them too, but the main aim of this thread is to help me remove GRUB and restore the windows bootloader. By mistake i made some wrong entry in my /etc/fstab file that is i was trying to automatically mount one folder under another folder. My syntax was wrong. So when i restart my RHEL 5 , at the boot time due to wrong entry in /etc/fstab system is giving file system error as follows:

I have recently purchased a new laptop, which came with Windows 7 pre-installed. I immediately installed Ubuntu alongside it with a dual boot. At first it worked fine, but when I restarted after the first time I used Windows, I ended up with an 'Operating system not found' error. I was able to reinstall the Grub bootloader using an Ubuntu Live CD, which appeared to fix the problem, but the next time I loaded Windows 7 and rebooted, the problem reappeared I think the problem is that Windows 7, for whatever reason, is somehow removing or disabling Grub.

I copied entire 160 gb as an mirrored image to 500GB HDD using Acronis Disk Director. I deleted entire 160 GB HDD.. Removed the 500 GB HDD and kept it seperate.. Installed ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 Worked a little bit... The i wanted to delete ClearOS.. So i connected 500GB HDD and booted again in Acronis Disk director Formated the entire 160GB HDD.. Copied back the entire 160 from 500GB HDD.. Now my sytem refuses to boot... Just 4 letters "GRUB" appears on the screen... I tried booting using XP CD.. It gives a blue screen.. I tried Windows 7 CD.. It says unable to fix due to MBR problem..
After completing the installation of Fedora-FEL edition, I cant boot from my hard disk. "No bootable device found " error appears.
I have one Windows XP & 2 Linux installation in my disk.
I tried to restore grub using "setup (...)" command.but same error repeats.
Even I cant restore Windows XP using "fxmbr" command in... recovery console .
But I can boot from that drive by "chainloader" command in grub. code...

I have a working RHEL in /dev/sda1 and a newly constructed Ubuntu Lucid in /dev/sda2. I'm going to edit the grub config and reboot the server into the new Ubuntu. However, I'm not 100% sure that the new distro can boot. And since my only way to access the server is via SSH, I need the network to be up too.
How can I configure Grub and Ubuntu so that if the server fails to boot, it will automatically reboot into the old RHEL? Currently using GRUB 0.93, but I can upgrade it if needed.
Update: In the end, no boot failure occured. But without the insurance from this, I wouldn't have attempted [URL]..
Is it possible to have the Windows bootloader point to Windows 7 and a Linux partition instead of using GRUB to point to Windows 7 and Linux?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently dual-boot XP and Debian sid. I currently have XP on /dev/sda1, sid on /dev/sda2 with /home mounted separately on /dev/sa3, swap is /dev/sda4. I have free space in both sa3 and 4, mostly in 4, of course. What I'd like to do is add a third partition, either with or without a separate home mount, but have my current grub2 still be the bootloader. I'm thinking I'll give a total of 33 G to it (I keep almost nothing on my hard drive, it's all on the cloud). I want to install Kubuntu and try it out, I've burnt the Live CD and it's very cool.

I've been using squeeze for a year or two now, on a PC dual booting with windows xp. Not long ago I thought that, as it's now become the stable release version, I'd do a fresh install, which I've been trying to do with the first two dvds. The installation proceeds as expected, up to and including setting grub. However, although grub saysthat it has detected windows xp, and I tell it to set up the dual boot, the computer on reboot goes straight into windows xp, with no on-scrteen option shown for choosing debian.

Only problem is, I couldn't boot Vista at all any more, so I removed my Debian installation from that drive. But the GRUB boot record persists, I don't have the Recovery disk to restore my old system, so I have to find a way to manually remove the GRUB track and put the old record in its place. I assume there was a copy made of it by the installation program, now my only problem is to find that file and copy the content back in place (at the address at the very beginning of the drive) all that by using Linux code, since that is all I have left. Being new to this game, I have no idea how to begin writing the right command for a job like this

I'm not sure how I did this, but my desktop will boot Ubuntu fine from a USB, but every time I try to install it, the install seems to go fine, but when I finish the install and the machine tries to boot the OS from it's hard drive, it does not work. The monitor does not get a signal and it just goes to sleep.

I have even tried running the system from a USB, running a "shred" command for the hard drive and then reinstalling - my theory was that the shred command would destroy all the data on the hard drive anyway, and allow a "clean" install from whatever was corrupt on it, but no luck - when I installed Ubuntu on the hard drive, same problem.
I'm not clear where the problem lies now, I'm assuming there is something up with it's master boot record, but there are no partitions on it's hard drive and I started with a completely blank, unformatted drive.
i installed ubuntu inside windows but someone instead of uninstalling it directly deleted the ubuntu folder inside windows ,thinking that the partition will be deleted. but when i restarted the system and command prompt came and said unable to find boot record and i couldn't boot windows as well and a grub prompt came like grub>, then i inserted the windows boot cd and repair the boot record error but my problem is , instead of doing this way, can i do so by grub prompt directly without using winidows cd.

I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...

I installed Debian on my PC and then installed Ubuntu. This worked fine and I could dual boot between the two. The PATA disk was /dev/hda on debian and (I think) /dev/sda on Ubuntu. I copied the entire disk to a sata disk using dd from knoppix and put the PATA one to one side. Now the Ubuntu comes up fine but when I boot debian, it complains about references to /dev/hda1, which is present in grub - root=/dev/hda1. Debian now expects sda references rather than hda references. How do I persuade Ubuntu to write /dev/sda1 to the bootloader rather than /dev/hda1 using grub-mkconfig?

After installing Windows 7, the GRUB got re-written by the windows bootloader. Now after booting into the live cd and mounting /boot partition (sda2), I tried to reinstall the GRUB with this command grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda as told by this [URL]
But I got the an error which says, Are you sure /dev is mounted? then i tried the same command on the / partition (sda5) which said, cannot find boot directory, Are you sure /dev is mounted?
And installation failed, now after restarting its just a black screen with grub> prompt.
My setup is like this:
* Installed Windows 7 on primary (SATA) hard drive
* Installed Ubuntu 11.04 on secondary (IDE) hard drive
I've worked with Wubi before, and I liked it so much, I decided to go full scale with Ubuntu. However, I think I've missed an option in the setup, because Grub has now taken over my bootloader. I tried reverting to the Windows loader with EasyBCD, but booting Ubuntu from there is impossible, since it doesn't show itself. By the way, I don't really understand EasyBCD, so that makes it even harder. Anyway, what I'm trying to accomplish here, is to get a bootloader which uses Windows as default and Ubuntu as secondary OS. How do I do this?
I have windows 7 home premium currently installed and I have just recently installed Linux Mint and it has replaced my MBR with GRUB. Is there any way I can restore the normal Windows 7 Boot Loader and have the secondary option to boot my Linux Mint?
