OpenSUSE Install :: Black Screen After Boot Menu?

Apr 2, 2010

i've just tried to install openSUSE on to a spare hdd, i've also got windows 7 on another. After installing everything and the computer went to reboot the screen just went black and didn't restart. After restarting it myself, i turned the computer on and got to a menu that says:

openSUSE
failsafe
windows

When i tried to go to openSUSE it seemed to work and a long list of text came up but after a few seconds it went to a blank screen. The same thing happens when i go to failsafe. so i'm not really sure what to do, i would have tried a few things i've found from searching but can't get to the command prompt on failesafe.

I've got an ati readon hd 4750 video card.

OpenSUSE Install :: Dvd Reset - Update Wouldn't Work - MSwindows In The Grub Boot Menu Disappeared

May 28, 2010

I have a dual boot system: windows xp and suse(10.2). I had to reinstall windows(again). When I tried to use the installer, it kept reseting my partitions to 500gb+ to linux. Nothing I tried would let me put it to the way it was(50gb to linux). Repair install failed. Update wouldn't work. MSwindows in the grub boot menu disappeared. I tried reinstalling suse. The installer blocked any attempt by me to put the partitions back to normal. How do reset the windows and linux partitions(850gb windows, 50gb to suse linux)?

OpenSUSE Install :: Commands Make System Boot To Grub Shell Instead Of Grub Menu?

Apr 17, 2010

I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.

Code:
grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
reboot

Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.

If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.

Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 262 2104483+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 263 13316 104856255 83 Linux

Ubuntu Installation :: I/O Error, No Boot Menu After Install?

Mar 28, 2011

SOLUTION: Burned a new Ubuntu install CD. The first one had an error during burning.Downloaded the ISO image, burned it to a disc and began installing Ubuntu on my laptop (also has Windows Vista on it). I am beginning the process of migrating off Windows entirely. I played around with Ubuntu using wubi for awhile.Install seemed to work perfectly. The installation completed and asked to reboot. After hitting the button to reboot the Ubuntu CD popped out and my screen went black. Then I saw a long list of I/O Errors... sr0 or something.Machine never shutdown. I manually shut it down after waiting a few minutes. Now, my machine simply boots into Windows Vista. No boot menu. However, I can tell that there is an ext4 partition (with ubuntu, I'm guessing) because my windows C drive is 20 Gigs smaller than it was before. (That is how big I made my ubuntu partition when I installed using the CD.)What do I need to do to get this working?

Ubuntu Installation :: Zino HD Install: No Grub Menu - Can't Boot Windows

Jul 15, 2010

I just got a Zino HD from Dell, and was planning to use it connected to my TV, dual booting Xubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. I did, however, run into some issues. I suspect I'm just going to have to burn a restore disc and start over, but I'd like to fix this if possible. Here's what I had to start with:

1 vfat partition (bootup?)
1 dell restore partition
1 Windows partition

Because the restore partition was a bloody 20 GB, and I could always get the restore done via disc, I reformatted it as ext4 and used it as "/". I then shrunk the Windows partition and allocated a home partition and some swap space. Note that immediately after the installer, I reformatted the home partition manually with an inode size of 128 to use with the Windows ext2 driver, but that shouldn't have really changed anything. End result file system order:

1 vfat
1 ext4 mounted as "/"
1 Windows
1 Swap
1 ext3 mounted as "/home"

I now have two problems:

1) I do not get any GRUB menu at all! It just boots directly into Xubuntu with no choices (not even memory test or restore mode).
2) I, obviously, can no longer boot Windows.

Keep in mind that this a fresh install on a brand new machine; I can't think of any reason GRUB wouldn't even show me a menu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Install - Or Any Other Based Distro - Just Hangs - Still Showing The Menu Of Boot Options

Mar 11, 2011

I bought a new NVidia Asus EN210 for my HTPC, but I can't get Ubuntu to install.

First I made a live USB disk of 10.10 with Unetbootin and when I choose the option of "try Ubuntu" it starts loading and then just hangs, still showing the menu of boot options. After this I tried Xubuntu on a USB disk. This one also starts loading but then just fails. I also tried XBMC Live. This one does show the Ubuntu 10.04 screen but then just shows a black screen.

After this I found a CD with Ubuntu 10.04, I think or it is 10.10, laying around in my room. I booted it and once I select an option from the install menu it starts to load, but then just gives a black screen with a flashing "-" sign.

The strange thing is, once I pop in the old video card, which is an ATI HD4350, my Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD on USB disk does work and it does get past the menu of boot options (in my second paragraph I describe how this isn't the case with Ubuntu 10.10 combined with my NVidia card).
