I've just installed suse 11.2 with gnome. Now I need to modify entries in the applications menu, mainly so blender starts in windowed mode. Right click on applications will let you hide an entry, not modify it. Right clicking on the suse computer menu won't even allow that. If I could find the file(s) which hold the actual data I could modify as required, but where are they?

First things first, I've just moved from Ubuntu with Gnome to openSuse with KDE. So I'm lost as doing some things in this environment. However, I'm loving what I'm seeing with suse/kde combo. I'm planning on making an extensive right-click menu to categorize all my applications. Basically I want to have the "start" menu available to me when I right-click. I've google casually for a couple days and haven't found much that helps, but I think its because I'm not using the correct keywords seeing as I'm new to this environment.
I have a feeling I'm going to have to make a [Desktop Entry], but I'm not sure how to handle hierarchy and stuff like that.
Caution to all using ati graphics download repository. I have been using SUSE 11.4 after an upgrade from 11.3 through zypper for months. I added ati graphics as a update repository. Software update installed two ati files. I did not notice their names.
Upon installation my graphics was acting funny so I uninstalled the two ati-files figuring I'd be back to where I was. Now I can only get into terminal window after reboot at both runlevel 3 and 5; no graphics at all. I keep getting message re: display 'null' I wish to return to original graphics configuration prior to ati downloads which, I believed used xorg drivers.
I believe I either need to revise xorg.conf file back to original which was overwritten by ati process or reinstall xorg/X11 related files. I have an ati radeon HD 3450 agp card. 32 bit SUSE w/11.4 installed and running. Anyone have a sample xorg.conf that might work or some other ideas of how to get back to where I was.
As a related question, if I do a fresh reinstall of SUSE 11.4 using dvd can I save my /home files and any /filesystem files that my special software created in root directories.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome as my desktop enviroment. I used Wubi to install from my laptop's default OS, Vista. I keep most of my media on the Windows partition, mostly for ease of use - such as streaming a movie through my xbox etc I would like to know if there is a way to edit the Gnome 'places' menu to have Music, Pictures etc direct to my /host/users equivalent.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI spent more than a week trying to understand how to synchronize my PDA (Windows Mobile 6.0) with Suse 11.1 and no result. So far I learned what is PalmOS and what is not (I've been trying J-pilot and Gnome Pilot) I've tried with USB-cable and Bluetooth.
What I have so far:
- SynCE (installed via YaST, with some other components)
- Blueman just in case.
Was by default in my SUSE 11.1
- Evolution
- working bluetooth (Gnome Aplet + OBEX)
- Multisync (it does see the SynCE, doesn't see the Evolution)
So how to synchronize is one case, but first of all I need to know: how connect my PDA that SUSE will see a device for synchronization? I've tried Bluetooth and I can only get a paired OBEX PDA. I can send files. that's all. I would like to ask You for help. How to do it, step by step. We can start from scratch. During debug we can use text-terminal mode. But after is finished I would like to have a GUI terminal. I can promise, that if we manage to set-it up. I can describe it as a WIKI for other. Step-by-step.
I have a strange problem with sound, or maybe It's ok, I dunno. The problem is. The first launched program that uses sound, "takes over" the sound or smth, anyway, all programs, started next, just not play sound at all. The only solution is to close all programs using sound and start one I need to "listen". When I get into sound settings menu and see the list of programs using sound, I see just one started first.
View 1 Replies View RelatedInstalled Suse 11.2 from download CD. During the "answering questions" at the beginning of the process, selected Gnome as the desktop enviornment instead of the default KDE. The install process ended with no reported errors. After the final reboot at the process's end, the Gnome logon screen was displayed. After the user name/password were entered, a medium green screen was displayed, but the Gnome desktop was never displayed. The "animal" logo was not on the screen just the green screen and some "filagree" lines, probably part of the logo.
Waited a few minutes, mouse-clocked, pressed various keys and then tried ctrl-alt-del, but no response. Did a power off/on reboot, but the results were the same.
I then did a re-install. Took the KDE default for desktop. At install's end, the KDE desktop appeared and everything works just fine. During this second install, all choices were the same as for the first/Gnome install. Worked from written notes, and not from memory, so am sure that the change to KDE was the only difference.
Couldn't find any information on this anomally via forum and Google searches, hence this post.
This is my first time to use Suse, so could well have "missed something".
My new HP625 Laptop came with SLED11 preconfigured - including such special keys as the wireless/bluetooth key etc under gnome. I need a 64bit OS and 8Gb for my applications and the HP site does not offer any explicit support for 64bit Linux. So I installed SLED64bit on separate system partition and can select now 32 or 64 bit from GRUB. There remains the problem of configuring gnome (or KDE) on the 64bit system to take advantage of the keyboard, sound, cam etc. I did find a 64bit wireless driver in the i586-Repo on the HP-site that requires the kernel from opensuse 11.3 and I got bluetooth working with gnome but just for the keyboard alone, I am stuck with finding a decent configuration under 64bit. Is it possible to migrate the system wide gnome configuration from the SLED32 bit installation (as configured by HP) to any SuSEx86_64 system?

I installed Wine and several menu entries were created in my GNOME applications menu. However, when I went to change the menu items later, (Through [Edit Menus]), the Wine Menu folder was replaced with the 'Other' folder, and the layout of the Wine Menu was destroyed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd just installed a *nix antivirus called Avrira Antivir (from downloaded script & installation files), but it completely froze my system when I tried to start it, and the system freezes at the login screen; which is probably because I selected the option of running it automatically upon startup...So here's the deal: I know that I can run a live Linux usb to mount my current fs, then edit the file(s) that load the Avira processes on startup, but I don't know what these files are, much less which directories they are in!
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot system on a 500GB HDD. Here is a printscreen of the partition table for the disk. It's a fairly standard set-up but the root partition is almost full (I know it's fairly unheard of but I have a lot of software provided by uni that takes up a lot of space). I would like to shrink my /home partition and increase the root one. I've downloaded gparted and got it onto a live CD. The only thing I really want to know before I go ahead is how will the editing of the partitions affect booting.
From what I can tell from reading is that the MBR has only got listed the place on the HDD where the bootable partitions start. These starting placed will not be affected by the alteration, so will the system quite happily boot in the same manner? One booted I'm assuming as the /home partition will have moved I'll need to alter fstab to mount /home again. Will having /home missing caused any adverse affects on the first boot into linux?
I'm running Lubuntu 10.10 and I would like a way, any way, to edit the Main Menu. No Alacarte does not work with Lubuntu unless you have Gnome installed and I do not plan on installing Gnome. Is there any other way to do this?

I am running Suse Linux Enterprise 10 on a laptop and by some strange reason the computer froze from overheating and I was forced to shutdown improperly. Once I restarted it booted right to the command prompt when it usually instead boots to the default user. I managed to get gnome running using the "startx gnome" command. But when gnome loads, none of my normal extentions load like my wireless driver, the sound driver, etc. how to restore gnome to automatically load the default user on start up or fix any other damage I might have done? lol
View 3 Replies View RelatedSince the latest update the gnome main menu quits unexpectedly whenever I try to select any funtion e.g. shutdown. In addition the network manager does not show up and does not configure the network (wireless). This behavior is since the latest update last week. Has anybody seen this as well? How can I revert to the previous state?
For no known reason there are a few subdirectories added to my Gnome - Locations - menu.
Both the traditional panel menu and the new - computer - menu
In the - computer - menu there is a option to remove items but this does not work.
Is there any way to remove those subdirectories from the menu list. Or/and where can I find that list to edit this manually. (Menueditor alacarte does not edit locations and system). (Suse 11.1)
It is possible to install this kind of menu on suse? I watched several movies on yt and it seems to be nice usability improvement comparing to standard OS menu - clean,simple, accessible.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a clean install of openSUSE 11.4 64 bit using gnome as the desktop manager. When selecting applications from the gnome menu, randomly the application will appear to not launch. However, if I click anywhere in left, upper portion of my desktop it becomes obvious that the application has launched and is not visible. For example, yast will not appear but clicking in that portion of my desktop causes various windows to appear that correspond to the different options in the yast home screen.

The changes are a little jarring, but I'm trying to have some good faith, see how I adjust to things, etc. Any ways, the applications menu (in "fallback" mode) or the 'activities -> applications' menus (in "full" mode) have every application I've ever installed, some times poorly classified. I'd like to edit these, making more minimal menus.
There is, of course, the "alacarte" application. While it runs just fine -- the changes are not reflected in the menus (in either mode). One could manually edit the desktop configuration text files, I assume, but as much work as I need to do -- I was hoping for a GUI application. Does an alternative exist? or a way to interface them?

I just upgraded to Lucid and kept a lot of my old grub settings (I had customized it somewhat). Also, I am not sure if I have grub or grub2. How can I figure this out?

I finally figured out that a .desktop file needed to be made in /usr/share/applications, but I can't get the icon to show up. For the "Icon" field in the .desktop file,tried giving an absolute path to an icon in my home folder, and I also tried putting the icon in all the folders under /usr/share/icons and just putting "eclipse" (the icon file name) as the valueI had copied this last from some of the existing .desktop files that worked, but still had no luck. Does anyone know how to do this?
