I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.
Code: grub root (hd0,3) setup (hd0) quit reboot
Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.
If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.
Code: Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 262 2104483+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda2 263 13316 104856255 83 Linux /dev/sda3 * 13317 14621 10482412+ 83 Linux
I have a used PC that came pre-installed with suse 11.2.Unfortunately, I do not have the install disk to use in case of whatever.I already know that when configuring a dual boot with Windows and Linux, it is recommended to install Windows first.I do not have that luxury now as 11.2 is installed and GRUB is the boot loader.Question is, if I boot the Windows 98 install disk on boot, how to not mess up GRUB and still add Windows 98 to GRUB menu?
One hard drive only here. 98gb free.It seems that W98 install will overwrite GRUB in this situation - causing problems. Maybe not, I don't really know for sure.I just need to install windows 98 on the same hard drive and if possible, have suse and w98 visible on boot in GRUB.
Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen....nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete....system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
I've just installed windows on my computer for gaming, since it took over the boot loader I went into the repair system function of the opensuse DVD. Now I'm back in linux but no windows partition is showing up on the grub menu. This is the output of fdisk -l how do I make it so grub sees my windows too? This is probably an easy fix but I'm a prior ubuntu guy and just started playing with suse which seems a bit more tech savvy and less forgiving then ubuntu. code...
I've a problem with the grub menu, I've install opensuse 11.3 on a usb HDD but the grub menu were installed on my internal HDD I've deinstal it from my internal one so that I don't have to chose between linux or windows but how can I install it back on my usb HDD?
I need some help since i installed opensuse 11.2 when i boot my pc, grub doesnt show me windows to boot only opensuse and failsafe this is my details code...
Yesterday I've updated my system from 11.2 to 11.3, fllowing the guide at SDB:System upgrade - openSUSE . Everything went fine (except an error during the installation of batik) but after reboot I got a grub error:
And I couldn't boot
After a CD boot, because I didn't want to try the OpenSUSE 11.2 entry, I saw that the entry for OpenSUSE 11.3 was wrong, see below the entries for 11.3 and 11.2:
Code:
And of course it worked and my updated system works fine
I made a clean install of opense Suse and by mistake I overwrited the menu.lst (because of the restoration utility). As a result I have the grub error 15 : file not found, and tried everything I could think.
Grub is installed on the MBR and boots from the extended partition. The new openSuse is on sda8, there is an old openSuse on sda4 but xorg is broken. I can boot on Windows, and sda4, but not on sda8 menu.lst
I have Opensuse 11.2 installed (on hd0 at the time of installation) To install Windows 7 alongside I had to switch my hard drives (hd0 became hd1 and vice versa) What is the best approach to reinstall grub and get both Opensuse and Win7 visible in the grub menu?
I am testing my crash recovery strategy for my linux system and I am having trouble with GRUB. I am basically restoring my backup (i.e. tar) unto a different hard drive, but I am having problems getting the machine to boot without me having to type the GRUB commands at the GRUB prompt that is presented when the machine boots up off the new hard drive. I have tried to restore the MBR in two ways (the 2nd one is the one that gets me to the GRUB prompt):
1. Get the MBR off the original drive and write it unto the new drive (all via dd), but that did not work at all: the machine hangs right away during boot up. It seems to hang right at the point where the BIOS tries to read the MBR.
Code:
On original drive:
# dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr+part.bin bs=512 count=1
On new drive (new drive is now in place of original drive):
reboot and remove FEDORA CD Using the 2nd option above, I get the GRUB> prompt during bootup. I can then boot into the system by issuing the commands that are in the menu.lst file, followed by the "boot" command. However, I would like for those commands to happen automatically, just like in the original configuration. It seems to me that GRUB is actually finding all its stage files because I doubt the GRUB program (the one displaying the prompt) fits entirely in the 446 bytes it has on the MBR. So, it must be loading its stage 2 (and stage 1.5??) files from my /boot partition. However, if GRUB is loading its stage files off the boot partition, why does it not load/read the menu.lst/grub.conf contained in the boot partition also?
I just installed OpenSuse 11.1 alongside of Ubuntu 9.10. After finishing up the installation I find that I can't get into Ubuntu. I have tried adding Ubuntu to the OpenSuse /boo/grub/menu.lst but it doesn't seem to be working.
After a fresh install of opensuse 11.3 and a xen-hypervisor and tools (all default install, nothing special) just get a black screen when I try to use kernel-xen. Default kernel runs like a charm. Xen-kernel gives me a black screen just after grub menu.
This is my menu.lst about it:
###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: xen### title Xen -- openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34-12 root (hd0,2)
Since certainly half a year I have to add the vga=0x317 parametere at the end of the root parameter in the menu.lst file after each upgrade of the kernel and also recently after upgrading from 11.1 to 11.3. Without this, the splash screen is not shown on my HP Pavilion laptop.
I added an entry to grub's menu.lst and reran grub (grub-install hd0) and now my background is gone and the entries just show up like on a normal console.
I searched the forums and I couldn't find anything. Does anybody know why this happened and how to fix it?
I have not changed anything in menu.lst except for adding the new OS.
I can't turn on my PC and write jet from my neighbors notebook. Because of problems with Windows updates und ubuntu vpn I installed today Windows 7 again and then openSuse. It was OK. Than I began with set up of different Programms for windows, like WinRar, Avira Antivir ect... As soos as it was done I wanted to begin with set up of openSuse... But the start menu is gone - there is nothing there now! Last time I could choose betwee 2 windows partitions, openSuse start-partition and openSuse fall-Save. -Now there is only "grub>" line
And I doesn't have any idea what I can do, I doesnt know where are startfiles, where is /boot/grub order, I don't know how can grub be used also. But I know that if I try to register my windows 7 agan at the same day, my windows lizens would get invalid. Has someone any idee what can be done?
I've recently installed suse x64 kde in dual boot mode with windows. I have 2 primary partitions with ntfs with 1 for windows7 boot and other for data/storage. There is no boot provision for data partition. SUSE install is on extended partition. I am unable to run fdisk -l and boot info script for some reason, kde is freaking me out (used to use gnome for last 4 years). The GRUB shows data as a boot and it added an entry in its menu. I will like to remove that entry from menu list.
I have manually added an entry for Ubuntu in my grub menu, using Yast. But every time the kernel is updated, this entry disappears. On the other hand, the one for Windows, that was added during OpenSuse's installation, is still there. So how can I keep this entry for Ubuntu ?
Edit : when I save the menu configuration in Yast, I get the following message : Code: Connecting to deprecated signal QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString) kbuildsycoca4 running... kbuildsycoca4 running...
I have a dual boot system: windows xp and suse(10.2). I had to reinstall windows(again). When I tried to use the installer, it kept reseting my partitions to 500gb+ to linux. Nothing I tried would let me put it to the way it was(50gb to linux). Repair install failed. Update wouldn't work. MSwindows in the grub boot menu disappeared. I tried reinstalling suse. The installer blocked any attempt by me to put the partitions back to normal. How do reset the windows and linux partitions(850gb windows, 50gb to suse linux)?
I loaded GRUB, and now when I reboot it goes straight into the 'grub>' command line. Initially GRUB had the root as (hd0,2), whereas the boot is on (hd0,1)...(hd0,2) is my '/home' partition, and (hd0,1) is my '/' partition... So on a bootup I ran...
Code:
root (hd0,1) setup (hd0)
Now when I boot I still get the 'grub>' command line, but now the root is correct.
From 'grub>' I can type...
Code:
grub> configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst
GRUB will then show the menu, and I can click the listings to load them. All's fine, but why doesn't GRUB just load the menu.lst without my prompting? How can I automate this process of typing 'configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst' each time I boot?
my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
I have debian squeeze installed but i also have Fedora 14 installed on another partition, the problem is that i can't get grub to boot into fedora, it boots into debian fine but it won't boot fedora (did i have to install grub to the partition instead of the mbr) and what is the entry for it in the grub.cfg file
I just got a Zino HD from Dell, and was planning to use it connected to my TV, dual booting Xubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. I did, however, run into some issues. I suspect I'm just going to have to burn a restore disc and start over, but I'd like to fix this if possible. Here's what I had to start with:
Because the restore partition was a bloody 20 GB, and I could always get the restore done via disc, I reformatted it as ext4 and used it as "/". I then shrunk the Windows partition and allocated a home partition and some swap space. Note that immediately after the installer, I reformatted the home partition manually with an inode size of 128 to use with the Windows ext2 driver, but that shouldn't have really changed anything. End result file system order:
1 vfat 1 ext4 mounted as "/" 1 Windows 1 Swap 1 ext3 mounted as "/home"
I now have two problems:
1) I do not get any GRUB menu at all! It just boots directly into Xubuntu with no choices (not even memory test or restore mode). 2) I, obviously, can no longer boot Windows.
Keep in mind that this a fresh install on a brand new machine; I can't think of any reason GRUB wouldn't even show me a menu.
The installation of Fedora 11 on my hard disk went smoothly Next I wanted to use the method posted by terry60 on 2/19/2009 to boot multiple operating systems. However, I am getting hung up on getting a copy of /grub/menu.lstcopy of menu.lst is needed for use with EasyBCDIf I try to list the contents of menu.lst the Live CD operating system says permission denied and I need to be root Hence how can I get a copy of menu.lst when the Live CD operating system blocks my access.
