OpenSUSE Install :: NFS Server Failing To Start 11.4 Upgrade
Apr 21, 2011
I just upgrade from 10.3 to 11.4. Everything went fairly smoothly and most things are still working execp nfsserver
getting:
/etc/init.d/nfsserver start

Just installed 11.3 on an aging IBM Thinkpad X40. But the network (and xdm) does not work. I saw in the logs the cryptic message nl80211 driver does not support authentication/association or connect commands. This machine worked on 10.3, so this is a confusion. What should I try next?
I have Suse linux 7.2 Prof' Yes I know its old but I have an old machine. I start installing with YAST in graphics mode but the title message is displayed.
11.2 is installed as a guest under Citrix XenServer 5.5.2. When I try to go to runlevel 5, the X server logs say that /dev/fb0 is not found, and that no screens are found. The only other errors in the log are that it can't locate a core keyboard or mouse.
I have installed opensuse 11.4 64 bit on a dell optiplex 755 with 4 gigs of RAM. Everything seems to be functioning but when I try to install new apps through YAST or zypper, it starts to download the package and it's dependencies, but you see it quickly slow down on the download speed until it gets to nothing, and I get the Abort,Retry prompt. The internet connection is fine. I can install apps from the DVD medium.
i have a script in /home/rpcaldeira/server.sh to start my source dedicated server. But i would like to start this on boot time. get this to start on boot time? I'm running openSuse 11.2 in Text Mode.
I have been running OpenSuSE 11.1 with the proprietary VNIDIA driver for a year or so and recently upgraded my internet connection from slow old dialup. I installed some software upgrades this made possible but the process failed on some point (I didn't make a note of the details) and the next time I tried to log on it booted up to the CLI. I tried startx and got the message;
using config file "etc/x11/xorg.conf" no devices detected Fatal server error no screens found giving up xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
I've been trying for awhile to install the restricted formats, but when in the download & and install process, YaST2 pops up saying that such and such RPM has failed. I hit ignore, and it happens again and again to all the other packages, bar the odd few that work.
I downloaded and burnt my copy of OpenSuse 11.3 yesterday and tried to install it on my old laptop. But the installation keeps failing for some reason. I will try to attach a picture.
I try to update my computer through the updater and it does not work, it fails, so it brings me to YaST, and that fails to... what is going on? Why are my updates failing?
I have just upgraded from 11.1 to 11.4. When I boot up, I get a command line, but when I do 'startx', I get 'Fatal server error: no screens found'. I have been looking for a solution and tried 'Xorg -configure' but this gives:
Code: Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vboxvideo_drv.so: undefined symbol: resVgaShared
Somehow Bind dns, Postfix, Cron all fail to start automatically at boot time? All of them need to be started manually after the system is up in order to function.
I performed a system update yesterday to CentOS version 5.4. Now I cannot get vmware to start. I get the error "VMware Server is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured for the running kernel. To (re-)configure it, invoke the following command: /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl." I tried running vmware-config but that did not resolve the issue. I saw the bug related to 2.0.x (after the update), but that does not seem to apply to 1.0.9.
I had an Ubuntu 10.10 installation that ran fine for around a month or so. I decided to go out and try to install aptosid (formerly known as sidux) as a dual boot. I couldn't get the desktop to boot in the LiveCD and kept getting an error saying that the nouveau module could not be loaded. I rebooted and at the main LiveCD screen, I added xmodule=vesa xres=1440X900. I was able to get a 1024x768 resolution. I decided that I really didn't like aptosid, so I shut it down and took out the LiveCD. When I booted back into Ubuntu, my resolution changed down to 640x480 for some reason. I decided to remove the proprietary nVidia driver I had installed via jockey. Once it was removed, I restarted. Now, I see no startup splash or a login screen - my monitor just goes to sleep.
I have all my files backed up already, so I decided to pop in my Kubuntu 10.10 LiveCD to install that. Once I choose the "Start Kubuntu" option, my monitor goes to sleep. I tried putting in Linux Mint Debian Edition LiveCD to see if that would work, and I had the same issue. After this, I went for the nuclear option and installed Windows 7 to see if it would wipe out any memory of my Linux drivers from the system. The Windows drivers for my card worked fine, so I decided to put the Kubuntu LiveCD back in and got the same problem. I am currently running a Partition Magic LiveCD, but could only boot into it using the Xvesa option instead of Xorg. My video card is an nVidia 9800 GT - and it has always worked in the past.
I have recently installed CentOS onto an old machine to get it up and running as a basic web/mail server. Originally the Network Interface worked ok, however I have been editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to try and set the IP address to be static.Now when I run the 'service network restart' command it won't bring the eth0 interface up and comes up with the following errors;
ifcfg-eth0 Line 3 DEVICE: command not found missing config file ifcfg-ifcfg-eth0
It doesn't seem to like any of the command words, even though most of these were in the original file that worked and the ones I added to do static I have commented out.
Squid gives the follwoing error messages when i attepmt to start it:Sep 10 12:33:24 localhost (squid): Cannot open '/var/log/squid/access.log' for writing. I had postgresql 8.3 running on opensuse 11.0, recently upgraded to 11.2 (so postgres is now 8.4) and have problems starting it. I make, su, then as root run:
# /etc/init.d/postgresql start Your databases are still using the format of PostgreSQL 8.3. Therefore a backup of the old PostgreSQL server program will be used until you have saved and removed your old database files See also /usr/share/doc/packages/postgresql/README.SuSE.{de,en} . I did a distribution upgrade using "apt-get dist-upgrade". After rebooting, I receive a message saying "Failed to start the X Server". When I okay the prompt for more info, I see the following: GDM: Xserer not found: /usr/bin/X :0 -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7 Error: Command could not be executed! install the X server or correct GDM configuration and restart GDM.gdm[4678]: WARNING: gdm_server_spawn: Xserver not found: /usr/binX :0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7
Recently i upgraded my laptop from ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 but alas! after the upgrade i don't get anything, just the 10.04 boot up screen and my cursor after some time. when i run it in recovery mode and tried to startx from there , it gave me a message " no protocol defined " now i can only access my system in failsafe x mod. code...
I just did a yum upgrade (5.3 to 5.4) on one node of my three node cluster (RHCS), which did:
Rebooted to the new kernel, but cman failed to start. Rebooted back to the previous kernel, but no change, so it doesn't appear to be the kernel.... Some errors are:
On the upgraded node, the following processes are running:
Whereas on the non-upgraded node, the following processes are running:
I have 2 services registered one for HAProxy and one for stunnel. When I type service start haproxy or service start stunnel they start and everything works fine. I ran ntsysv and they are set as autostart, and I have init.d scripts that work. I have checked the runlevel and using chkconfig runlevel 3, 4 and 5 are :on. And I also added service haproxy start and service stunnel start to inittab. But when I restart the computer haproxy and stunnel fail to autostart. I am a fedora novice and I have no idea why this isn't working...
I wrestling with a new slackware install and I've got a problem with exaile. It was built with sbopkg, and doesn't work. It doesn't start at all from the menu (in Xfce,) and provides the following error message when started from Terminal:

I recently configured my client to log on using my (open)ldap account. Since then I could not get thunderbird started from my ldap account. But if I su to one of the local accounts, it opens.

i'm running a fresh install of 10.10 with a casper-rw partition off a usb drive.
nm-applet won't start after system upgrade with gnome 3.0. NetworkManager version is 0.899 in gnome 3 repo, I read somewhere that it should be 0.9xxx for gnome 3.0. Also got this message "The system network services are not compatible with this version." when trying to run network from system settings.
Running openSUSE 11.3, installed a month ago, and the only change I did from the default install was to update to kde 4.5 (along with usual updates).Since the upgrade, kmix doesn't start. When I click it, I see the bouncy kmix icon, and a new slot is opened on the task bar which reads 'kmix', but it shows nothing, and after a minute or so it disappears, along with the kmix bouncy icon.No error is given, so I tried to run from shell. This time when I try 'kmix' it does nothing at all (doesn't appear in 'jobs').
