nm-applet won't start after system upgrade with gnome 3.0. NetworkManager version is 0.899 in gnome 3 repo, I read somewhere that it should be 0.9xxx for gnome 3.0. Also got this message "The system network services are not compatible with this version." when trying to run network from system settings.

What i've tried already:
*) Installed the "GNOME Desktop Environment" --> Nothing changed
*) did a yum provides "/usr/lib64/bonobo/servers/*" to check which packages are providing applets - didn't found anything which sounds like the system monitor applet
The XfApplet shows up a bunch of available applets but not the system monitor ...
Trying to add printers to a new install, and system-config-printer doesn't start. CUPS is working, and I am able to add and manage printers using http://localhost:631, but I would prefer to use the applet.

Similar problems (possibly different causes) include [URL], from only three weeks ago, but no responses, and this one [URL], which I don't think is the issue because I don't seem to have an "extra" python install at /usr/local/bin/python.
I am a opensuse 11.3 user with firefox 3.6.8.I use 32 bit version and having trouble with one of my banks applet when launched from the firefox , it shows up as 'start:applet not initiazed' and then just hangs there.I have tried a lot googling and looking around in opensuse forums, but could not get my browser working. If I use How do I test whether Java is working on my computer? , it shows the java version is working. I have tried removing icedtea , but did not help.I have also found , when I install opensuse 11.3 , this applet seemed to have worked fine. BUt, after all the online updates system did , it just stopped working with this applet not iniatilized message.

gnome-netstatus-applet takes the same room!
I add a "command line" or "mini-commander" applet to the panel in gnome, but nothing happens.
If I launch "/usr/lib/mini_commander_applet" on a terminal, I get a dozen such applets, for all the times I tried, but then I have an xterm tied up.
If I launch the same from "alt-f2" it does not work, and gives no error.

On my ASUS Eee 1000H with openSUSE 11.3 I'd like to be able to switch bluetooth on and off with the gnome bluetooth applet. However, when I run /usr/bin/bluetooth-applet as a normal user, the applet tells me:

Okay, so it doesn't have write permissions on /dev/rfkill. When (as root) I change the permissions on /dev/rfkill from crw-r--r-- to crw-rw-rw-, the applet works as expected. Until the next reboot, when the permissions for rfkill are reset to crw-r--r--. How to make the permissions stick? Or if there is a better way to allow the applet to enable and disable the bluetooth adapter?
I have a minor problem with my "Update Applet 2.28.0" in Gnome. It occurs when I want to make the applet do one or more suggested update(s). It always asks me for the password of superuser/root: "Authenticate : Authentication is required to update packages. [...]". I think under my installation before (11.1 maybe updated from an older version) I could tell the automatic/semi automatic updater to remember the su password (in YaST or in the authentication dialog?).
In the help manual on my computer (and in the internet) there is the possibility to make the updater remember the password via policy kit: ("Access to all privileged operations is controlled via PolicyKit." See: GNOME Documentation Library : gnome-packagekit Manual : Introduction) I could not find any policy kid or any other possibility to give to the automatic updater (or its user) that privilege permanently (=to remember authorization). I think on a system with more (real) users this could be a real problem (not just an inconvenience).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed openSUSE today using a network installer cd, opting for the Xfce environment. Everything went smooth with the installer, but I have some issues with the network. After the fresh install, nm-applet did not start. I got the following error:

Fortunately I used Archlinux for a quite long time and I know how to connect to WPA2 encrypted wireless network from command line, so I was able to connect to the internet and do an upgrade - everything went just smooth and fine again.
After the update and restart, I found the nm-applet icon in the system tray. And here comes the second problem: I can connect with the nm-applet, but the connection does lasts only for about 10 seconds. So practically I can't use the net this way either. Ok, no problem, I fired up Yast, disabled the networkmanager and choose to start my network with the traditional method. I entered the required stuff from my wireless card ( ESSID and passwd ), set to activate at boot time and reboot.....
I thought I was removing the chat status piece of the indicator applet (I know what it is now, didn't then), but I accidentally removed the whole thing. Now when I figured out how to put it back on the panel, I can't get it back to where it was (which was to the RIGHT of the system date/time applet). How can I do this as well as move the indicator applet that has the volume control in it?

It seems like it is waiting for some sort of automated timeout, since the harddrive stops in the middle of Gnome startup (after login) for around 10 secs or so. Is there a logfile of the startup-sequence somewhere that I could look at and/or post here?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded Sunday evening from FC14 to FC15 using the yum preupgrade method. Services such as httpd, vsftpd, sshd, named and even the VNC server are all running. I can connect via VNC client and get a downgraded gnome desktop, but from the console, I cannot start X or gnome desktop.I have searched many threads over the last day+ and found many references to problems with nVidia drivers - and I have a nVidia adapter. but I am not sure what is next to do and need a lead.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. Most of the upgrade went well except for one package (mpd). Ubuntu rebooted and went into a sexy-ish minimal grub. I launched Ubuntu, everything went fine. The only thing I can't seem to get working is Unity/Gnome. When I log on with kdm and choose 'default' or Ubuntu Classic, everything loads fine except for the taskbar/whatever interface. (I usually run wmfs instead of kde/gnome and I'm not sure which interface is currently installed right now. I have both kubuntu-desktop and ubuntu. )
I can still, however, right click and see my desktop/desktop icons. The only thing that does not load is the gnome/unity interface itself. I need it to manage my fonts to fix my wmfs fonts that got screwed up. (I'm using a bitmap font and it doesn't work unless I activate whatever settings I have to activate. )
I am not home right now and this was written on a phone. I apologize if this whole post seems confusing/total blabber. edit: Ubuntu Classic works fine, but Ubuntu/Default does not automatically launc the Unity interface.
I'm having trouble with my java, I got it to isntall, restarted but when I go to any java based chat, or drawing site it doesn't load the applet, the applet shows up it just says "Start: Applet not initialized"
Did I install it wrong?
When my system starts, the bluetooth monolithic applet is alwaysstarted. I'm not using any bluetooth devices, so there's no need to runit but I can't find where to stop it from loading.I ran chkconfig andit's not there.[URL]

Seeing this on two systems that went through F13-F14 upgrade.
version: gnome-applets-2.32.0-1.fc14.x86_64
symptom: via right click on a gnome panel, perform "add to panel" and choose Dwell Click.
Gnome panel bites the dust with SIGSEGV at this point, restarts, and then you've got dwell click on the panel.
Anyone else seeing this, and better yet, have a solution?
I talked a friend into trying Ubuntu, and installed it via wubi. So far, he likes it a lot, but today I checked his computer out, and saw that he had a lot of updates pending. There was a kernel update, openoffice, grub, the whole lot. So, I started the update, and, when it finished, the system froze.
I restarted the PC, but now Ubuntu says that the root partition is not ready. When I open a diagnostic shell, it says "Root filesystem check failed". However, an fsck works just fine, and I can see all the files in both Ubuntu and Windows.
There's only one real disk, as far as I can see, /dev/sda1, and it's the Windows disk. The Linux root is a /dev/loop5 which points to a file under Windows. I suppose it's the wubi way, although I'm not familiar with that.
There's a possibility that the Windows disk had errors while I was running Ubuntu; in fact, Ubuntu said something to the effect while booting the first time it failed.
What can I do to boot normally?
I read somewhere that you cannot have Gnome 2 and Gnome 3 installed on the same system at the same time.

It keeps shrinking everytime I try to expand it a bit, I had to edit > select all and copy to be able to read it. And it sounds like it's trying to play a sound that sounds like welcome, but it gets cut off, it also makes a sound when closing it. I'm assuming this was supposed to be a first time run thing for gnome but it keeps showing up in kde.
I'm sorry for my stupid questions, but I'm quite new in linux world.

gnome commander does not start as root. It started before. Not so long ago i restarted my pc, and i think gnome-commander (as root) did not close. And now it wont start. I started it as: su -> password -> gnome-commander Where can i check or what command should i run to help u guys diagnose the problem.
P.S. i tried to run nautilus as root but that did not work either, and gave me these error:
