Just installed 11.3 on an aging IBM Thinkpad X40. But the network (and xdm) does not work. I saw in the logs the cryptic message nl80211 driver does not support authentication/association or connect commands. This machine worked on 10.3, so this is a confusion. What should I try next?

My actual problem is I can't see my wireless network but I see just those of my neighbours.I know mine is working because I can connect to using a Mac and windows.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed CentOS onto an old machine to get it up and running as a basic web/mail server. Originally the Network Interface worked ok, however I have been editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to try and set the IP address to be static.Now when I run the 'service network restart' command it won't bring the eth0 interface up and comes up with the following errors;
ifcfg-eth0 Line 3 DEVICE: command not found
missing config file ifcfg-ifcfg-eth0
It doesn't seem to like any of the command words, even though most of these were in the original file that worked and the ones I added to do static I have commented out.
My wireless network is down. I got thinkpad x120e, chipset: Realtek RTL8188CE, driver: rtl819ce.
Here is what I did so far:
upgraded to 2.6.38-bpo.2-686
installed firmware-linux-nonfree
Added the firmware file from the repo since it's not yet packaged in firmware-realtek and reloaded the module.
'iwlist sc' shows: 'wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down'
'dmesg |tail -20' shows:
rtl8192ce:rtl92c_download_fw():<0-0> Failed to request firmware!
firmware 0000:04:00.0: firmware_loading_store: vmap() failed
I also tried the following commands:

I'm using three different UNIX OS's.I have used gnome on my laptop for most of the time I have had it and I decided it was time for a change in GUI,I am wanting to use KDE but I can't get it to work with my laptop I have tried mandriva 2010.1 spring and that one was slow and it kept dropping my wireless connection.So I got rid of that in tried Kubuntu and now it will not use the wireless.Ubuntu and Ubuntu SE and the live version of super gamer can all connect it's just Kubuntu and mandriva
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a Linksys WRT54G router with the latest firmware. I've got an HP laptop connecting wirelessly and my main box connecting wirelessly with a Linksys WMP54G card. (As an aside, I used to have another box too with the same wireless card). Both are set up with a static IP. Both can access the Internet just fine. The router is on the main floor. My main box is in the basement. Both boxes are running fully patched versions of Slackware64 13.1. sshd is running on both.
I like to ssh into the other box when there's a security update or to copy a file from one computer to the other, etc. The problem is that I can't do that all the time. Even if the laptop is connected to the network and accessing the Internet, on my main box ssh will still "say ssh: connect to host ***** port 22: No route to host". It is my understanding that if I ssh in, it is accessing the other computer directly and not going through the router. What would cause this? Even if I bring the laptop within four feet of my computer, it still can't connect.
There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to when it will connect and when it wont. Sometimes I can access it just fine then about five minutes later I can't.
Having problems with getting wireless to work on my laptop. My problem is that the plasmoid-network manager shows that I am connected to my wireless network (with SSID "Fatty"), but I can't get onto the web. Browser, chat application, twitter client - nothing is able to connect. Followed the instructions given by the stickies at the top of this forum. Here is what I got.

Before I go any further I must admit that I'm pretty rubbish at setting these up, so please be gentle!
Now my problem; I have a normal desktop pc (I don't want to set it up as a server) but when I check the hardness of my set up with Gibson Research Centre, it fails. It can see ports 22,23,80,443 as closed but still visible.....? I have never had this happen to me before and struggling my way through yast firewall tool, I can find no easy way of sorting this out.

As far as I can tell it is connecting but not getting an IP address via DHCP. when running ifup it says its backgrounding getting an ip address.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using an Acer Aspire 5536 AMD dual core laptop with a 64bit installation of Susie 11.4. Using 11.2 I had no problems connecting to the wireless router. As soon as 11.4 was installed, clean install, and the laptop rebooted, network manager failed to start, until manually invoked and then enabling networking through the system tray. Even after this it will not connect to a wired or wireless network sometimes for more than 30 minutes.

But I have to do this every time I boot the machine. Ideally, I want the machine to do this on it's own at startup.
Also, I'm totally new to linux and I don't really understand what the 1st line of code is doing? The 2nd is just to check that the 1st line worked, and the 3rd does the settings for the wireless network I'm connecting to.
If you want to get into why I have to do this every time, then look at my original thread. But I started this new thread just to find out how I can get these lines of code done automatically at startup.
I have 10.04 installed on my HP MiniNote Netbook. If I plug it into the the ethernet directly, all is well, but if I only use the wireless, i get no DNS servers. And one of my wireless networks is on the same router as the wired connection. Also, wireless works just perfectly on my MacBook Air. So, I do not think it is the router. So why am I not getting DNS addresses? How would I set them manually? I can't figure out how to start network manager.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried connect to internet through iPhone (bluetooth tether), so I followed one tutorial... It said I have to change "networkmanager" to "ifup" in yast>network settings, and make some other changes... I did it, but I couldn't connect via iphone... OK... I put back all changes, also changed ifpu to networkmanager.
After reboot, Knetowrkmanager gives me "network management disabled" on startup, instead of list of my networks.
Of course, I google for solution, but without any luck. And then, I don't know why, I killed Knetworkmanager, start it again, and.. it worked!
But now, I have to kill it, and start again always, when I reboot my laptop...(HP Compaq 6720s, BCM4312, KDE 4.3.4)
I had an Ubuntu 10.10 installation that ran fine for around a month or so. I decided to go out and try to install aptosid (formerly known as sidux) as a dual boot. I couldn't get the desktop to boot in the LiveCD and kept getting an error saying that the nouveau module could not be loaded. I rebooted and at the main LiveCD screen, I added xmodule=vesa xres=1440X900. I was able to get a 1024x768 resolution. I decided that I really didn't like aptosid, so I shut it down and took out the LiveCD. When I booted back into Ubuntu, my resolution changed down to 640x480 for some reason. I decided to remove the proprietary nVidia driver I had installed via jockey. Once it was removed, I restarted. Now, I see no startup splash or a login screen - my monitor just goes to sleep.
I have all my files backed up already, so I decided to pop in my Kubuntu 10.10 LiveCD to install that. Once I choose the "Start Kubuntu" option, my monitor goes to sleep. I tried putting in Linux Mint Debian Edition LiveCD to see if that would work, and I had the same issue. After this, I went for the nuclear option and installed Windows 7 to see if it would wipe out any memory of my Linux drivers from the system. The Windows drivers for my card worked fine, so I decided to put the Kubuntu LiveCD back in and got the same problem. I am currently running a Partition Magic LiveCD, but could only boot into it using the Xvesa option instead of Xorg. My video card is an nVidia 9800 GT - and it has always worked in the past.

On Opensuse 11.2, I would like to connect my ipod touch to a wireless ad-hoc network of my laptop. I have no wireless WIFI-router at home, so I have to use the laptop as a router to the internet. I know I have to enter a static IP adres and my router's address, but where ? I haven't found any place under network tools to do this, only saw some fields with SSID's and MAC addresses to fill in.

I clicked "Network Settings", and I found that the ip address was wrong, which is "192.168.1.10/24", and netmask field is empty, so I modifed the configuration file located in /etc/sysconfig/network, named ifcfg-wlan0, added one line(NETMASK= '255.255.255.0'), saved it and reboot the system. After rebooting the system, I still found the ip address is wrong and netmask field is empty, so I have to use ifup command to activate my card manually every time the system starts.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 2 services registered one for HAProxy and one for stunnel. When I type service start haproxy or service start stunnel they start and everything works fine. I ran ntsysv and they are set as autostart, and I have init.d scripts that work. I have checked the runlevel and using chkconfig runlevel 3, 4 and 5 are :on. And I also added service haproxy start and service stunnel start to inittab. But when I restart the computer haproxy and stunnel fail to autostart. I am a fedora novice and I have no idea why this isn't working...

Does google searches inside this forum?Now... for my problem, whenever I hibernate (suspend to disk) or sleep (suspend to ram) I can't resume my wireless connection nor connect to another.I don't know if this is an issue if I use cables, because I simply don't with my netbook:The hardware in question is an ASUS 1005HA eee pc, running openSUSE version is 11.3 fully updated. Didn't mess with wireless connections, nor kernel or hibernate settings
