I am running dual boot Linux Mint/Windows 7 Home Premium on a Dell 560s Computer. Recently, had an event which required me to use the Windows 7 recovery CD to fix my mbr and rebuild it. After doing so I discovered when I boot the computer I know longer have the option to select either Windoze or Linux.
View 1 RepliesI have two partitions Windows XP (which was already installed before Ubuntu) and Ubuntu 9.1 (which I installed later).Now the XP doesn't boot anymore (sorry but I need it sometimes), the Windows screen with the progress bar appears and then it reboots after a couple of secs.
I can access to the XP partition from Ububtu.Of course I don't want to damage Ubuntu during the XP recovery action.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot Acer Aspire One, after reinstalling Windows back to "original factory", the way it was straight out of the box, it now will not boot up at all. It goes to the Windows start screen goes blank, and loops there infinitely. Is there a USB tool I can use to figure out what went wrong and recover either my Windows or Linux partition with out having to do a complete reinstall?

sda1: W7
sda2: FAT16
sda3: /boot
sda4: encrypted LVM with debian (everything besides /boot)
now I've re-installed W7 so grub was overwritten. I've tried the procedure which worked for me previously:booting with the netinst usb in rescue mode, choosing a root partition to mount, using grub-install to reinstall the grub:

grub-install /dev/sda
Now I'm on Jessie (stable), and this time this fails, and I am able to mount only sda3.grub-install doesn't exit so I'm assuming it has been replaced by `grub-installer'. also '/boot' doesnt exist so I created it manually.

The latter fails with

I would like to recover my grub installation in a dual boot system. if there is an easy way to recover grub using flash disk? If yes is your suggestion opensuse developed? (currently running 11.3) . It would be nice also to have some gui just to make things easier. If not I assume that then the only option is the boot from dvd. Is that right?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. for few days i was running Ubuntu only, downloaded some files and created some directories. few minutes ago, i switched to Vista to see something and i wanted to burn some of the files i downloaded using Ubuntu but couldn't find those folders.
i thought maybe its related to different file system or something so i switched back to Ubuntu and surprise! my folders are not there, instead i got a file, of unknown type with the same name as the folder had! in another folder case it's was an image (some print screen of my browser screen - Mozilla) and again with the name of what was the folder! first - what the hall had happened? second - can i recover my data somehow?
I had a dual boot windows xp / ubuntu system. I needed to put more disk space on my system so I had the win xp system disk cloned. After doing that my ubuntu installation no longer appears.
The Ubuntu system was and is on a separate hard drive. So I am fairly sure that it is intact.
Is there someway I can restore the boot information?
I have window 7, Ubuntu and Cent Os installed in my system. I was actually trying to change boots options but unfortunatly i lost all boot entries. Is there anyway i can recover all three boot records.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have XP on my IDE hard drive and Ubuntu on my USB hard drive (which is really an IDE drive with a USB adapter and external power souce). We've used Windows once in the past month, so we decided to jettison it. Two questions: 1. Can we simply delete all partiitions on the IDE hard drive and reformat or will this cause problems? 2 Is the write-speed gain worth switching the drives out, putting the Ubuntu drive in my IDE slot and my freshly wiped drive on the USB adapter?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am quite experienced user of Ubuntu desktop / server distributions. Recently my desktop 9.10 disk failed and I decided to reinstall using 10.04. My configuration is a dual disk dual bot system. I have XP Pro SP3 on one disk and Ubuntu 10.04 on second. XP has own, untached MBR ubuntu got Grub 2 installed on the same disk as Ubuntu. Ubuntu disk is booting first in BIOS. Grub 2 detected both system, however I can boot only to Ubuntu. When I am trying to boot XP I got black screen only. Looks like booting is stack in BIOS stage, because crt+alt+del reset system.
I read Ubuntu forum, search Google and did not come with any solutions. My XP MBR is OK. I can boot directly, choosing XP HDD in BIOS as a starting disk. All entries in grub.cfg looks fine to me. I made 3 different clear installations of Ubuntu. Each with the same result. I reinstaled Grub2 with no effect. I wonder if this may be a hardware/Grub 2 compatibility issue. I am using quite old components.My motherboard is Assus P4C800 Delux. I have 5 HDDs 2 CD. Exactly the same configuration was OK with 9.10/XP dual disk dual boot using Grub legacy.

I currently have a dual boot on my 160gb hdd, but even that feels cramped. i was wondering...I have a spare 40gb harddrive compatible with my laptop. could I just install the windows 7 installation there?
assumably i'd swap in the appropriate windows 7 hdd whenever i'd want to load windows 7 at Grub.

Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /boot
If I switch off and restart, ubuntu will then start without issue.
My setup is like this ....3 disks, one with 10.10 clean install - so Grub2, separate partitions for /, /boot and /home, one with windows 7, one with windows XP and 10.04 wubi (this is my old disk which I will trash once I'm happy with my upgrade to 10.10 & 7 on separate disks.
I installed 7 and 10.10 with ONLY their disks installed. After both were working, I added all disks and rejigged the grub2 menu (using update-grub and StartUp-Manager).
This problem only seems to occur if my previous boot was not 10.10 ( I will investigate this further). It's as if something (grub2 ?, the bios ?) is remembering part of the previous boot and not using the grub2 menu completely.
I'm not at all sure what happened, but now Ubuntu won't boot. A program just froze (as programs often do), so I shut down and rebooted, only to find pages and pages of gibberish about ATA sectors and stuff when I tried to get GRUB to load my usual Ubuntu platform (Karmic Koala). I tried "recovery" platforms and older ones, but no luck. I'm now using the Live CD and I've found an error saying "DISK HAS MANY BAD SECTORS" about my '160GB ATA Hitachi HTS542516K9SA00'. It apparently has 109 bad sectors, and the Live CD's assessment is that I "replace the disc".
View 4 Replies View RelatedHad Ubuntu 10.10 running fine on a Dell box, shut down as normal earlier in the week but now won't boot from GRUB (ends up with Busybox screen and initramfs(?) prompt). PC is a dual boot system which still boots OK into the XP partition on the same hard disk. I've tried all the other Unbuntu boot options in the GRUB menu (older kernels and the 'recovery' / non-recovery options) but all produce the same failure to boot into Ubuntu. I've searched the forums and tried various things but nothing has worked so far.
I tried the fix of booting from an Ubuntu 10.10 live CD, creating a mount point and mounting the relevant linux partition before using #apt-get update and #apt-get upgrade options to repair the installation. This seemed like a logical simple solution BUT the partition will not mount!! Further investigation using the Disk Utility app in the Ubuntu drop down menu indicated an error message along the lines of 'cannot mount Daemon inhibited' which I can't seem to find much information about fixing.
Using Gparted it looks like all the partitions originally set up on the disk are still there.
I put a lot of time into getting the system set up (scanners, printers, webcams and software) and would be really annoyed to have to do it all again if at all possible ...
I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10. Initially, I had the problem on the "Who are You" screen and was told that lower case letters were needed. Long story short, I was given a work-around since there was a partition on my hard drive. Ubuntu installed correctly - works just fine. However, upon booting up, if I choose Windows 7, it takes me to Recovery and wants to reinstall factory specs. What's the best way to resolve this? Is going back to factory specs and then reinstalling Ubuntu a viable option? This is brand new computer and I've downloaded nothing - wanted to make sure everything was working fine before I did that - so I would have no problem with doing that.
View 9 Replies View RelatedPreviously I'd installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Lucid) on my Acer Aspire One 751h netbook. the machine came with XP installed, so I installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot setup. I had various problems with the configuration of Ubuntu (nothing to do with the boot process, and now solved) so I reinstalled it.
What I'd actually done with the second installation was to install it again alongside both XP and the original Ubuntu installation (maybe that was also a stupid thing, but I didn't know it would work like that). When I realised what I'd done, I did the stupid thing, which was to delete the partitions with the older installation and swap file (using the Disk Utility).
After that, the next time I rebooted I went straight into grub-rescue. I don't know much about this, but I found a forum entry explaining the basics, so I can now issue grub-rescue commands that let me boot into Ubuntu. I've run update-grub and my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file looks fine.
However, I think this only kicks in once I've got past the initial boot menu and have chosen Ubuntu (now on sda5 - hd0,5). My problem is that the files/processes that load the boot menu on startup still have the old configuration, so when I reboot I still go into grub-rescue and I get 'partition not found' (or, since I recreated the partitions, 'file not found') and root is at (hd0,7).
Is there a way, once I've got into Ubuntu, of changing the information in the startup boot menu Alternatively, if I copy my entire file system from sda5 into sda7, would that do the trick?
I recently installed 11.1 via unetbootin from the network onto an old Sony VAIO laptop. After the installation completed, I suppose the OS started to boot, but I was presented with a black screen. I heard "chimes." The black screen does not provide any visible feedback from mouse or keyboard input. I hard rebooted and was presented with an interesting background graphic (grayish, I think) that faded to the same black screen.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHave just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.
In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.
Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.
The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.
I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.
After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!
When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.
I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!
Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".

View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried the rescue mode of the install DVD. It doesn't have any package management initialized. What I want to do is have a LiveCD environment where I can install an RPM package into that live running system (not persistently ... but pretending so in RAM).
Ubuntu can do this. If I choose "Try Ubuntu" in the boot menu selection, I get a live system that has the DEB package manager ready to go. It can install more packages that depend on packages already installed.
I just want the same but having Fedora. If 16 GB of RAM is not enough, I can get more.
I am looking to setup some computers as thinclients to connect to my MS Terminal Servers. We have a homebrew application that configures RDP sessions. A user logs into a webpage that dynamically generates a "launch.rdp" file. This file is generated to balance the load between servers.What I'd like to do is configure an image to boot up into Mozilla. When the user goes to the webpage, I'd like the launch.rdp file to open up in a terminal server session.I've tried with rdesktop and tsclient, but unfortunately neither would work with a "rdp" file.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently got a netbook and setup as dual boot between win7 starter and 9.10 (64bit). Win 7 starter is not impressive so i want to nuke it and give the space all to my /USR partion. I am comfortable working with Gparted and assume that i can launch using my gparted live usb and delete the windows partion and then resize the /usr partion.
what changes do i need to make w/ Grub2? I would prefer not to see the Grub menu at all and have it load right the main kernel if possible. Also, if this is possible is there a way to get to the Grub menu during boot should i need to select a different kernel?
