OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 And Win7 Dual Boot - Grub Lost?
Apr 1, 2011I am trying to Dual-boot Windows & and OpenSUSE 11.4, and have run into walls all over the place. Here is what I did:
1. Windows 7 was already installed. (Don't like it, freezes all the time)
2. Installed OpenSUSE using default partition options.
3. Booted into OpenSUSE with no problem
4. Tried booting into Windows, no joy.
5. Got that figured out, now I can get into Windows.
6. GRUB is gone, so now I can't get back into OpenSUSE.
Ubuntu :: Lost WIN7 After Installing U10.04 / Get That Back?
Oct 2, 2010I have a harddisk which is partiotioned in C & D. I've installed WIN XP on C and WIN 7 on D. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on D beside WIN 7. Now I can't access to WIN 7 and also to drive D in XIN XP and in Ubuntu.
What can I do to get back WIN 7 and drive D ?
General :: Partition Lost After Win7 Installed
Jul 28, 2011I have a PC, with 1 HD of 500GB and the following partitions:
Windows XP - NTFS 50 GB
Windows 7 - NTFS 350 GB
Linux Ubuntu - 98 GB
Linux swap - 2GB
The last OS that I have installed was Windows 7, and each time, when I started up my PC, I saw GRUB first, and after choosing the option to load windows, the Windows loader giving me 2 options, one for Windows 7 and one for Windows XP. I didn't like to see first GRUB and after that the windows loader, it was redundant, but everything was working well. One day, I decided to mix the windows 7 and the windows XP partitions (deleting the windows XP and resizing windows 7). I tried to do that with the Windows 7 utility included in the control panel but I couldn't. It said that I couldn't delete the active partition or something like that. It was not possible to delete the partition in which WinXP was stored.
Then, I decided to boot with Ubuntu and use the partitioning tool that comes with it to delete the WinXP partition. It was possible to delete the partition, and I also putted the option "bootable" on the 350GB Windows 7 partition. After that, I rebooted and it was not possible to load windows. Then I tried changing in GRUB the entry for Windows, because I thought if I could put the correct partition to load from, it wouldn't be more problems. I tried several times but I couldn't load windows, so I putted the Windows 7 DVD and I started the installation process, waiting to see an option saying that there was already a system in the partition of 350GB, and allowing me to fix the mbr in that partition.
My surprise was when I choose the partition of 350GB and the installation process began. I was afraid of to lose my data then I decided to reset the computer! And now, all my 350GB disk is gone! I can't see the partition when I enter with Ubuntu. I'm really worried about this, because the computer detects the 350GB partition as empty, and I don't know what to do! I turned off the computer and now I am using another to write this. I have all my files and important information in that partition! and It seems it's lost. I hope it's still possible to restore the partition. Actually I don't care if I have to install again my operating systems but I need my information!
OpenSUSE Install :: Suse11.4 - Clear Up A Free Space In HD To Install Win7 ?
Jul 9, 2011Just installed and started to use the suse11.4 two weeks ago when my Win7 broke down. Now I got a new Win7 recovery disc from my laptop manufacturer, and want to install a Win7 accompanying with the suse11.4.
My question is how to clear up a free space in HD to install win7? Currently, I have 3 partitions that are sda1, sda2 and sda3 with space 2G(swap), 20G(root) and 270G(home) respectively. I want to free up half space from sda3 to install Win7, how to do it without delete the data on it? One weird thing is that my HD totally is 320G, but when I installed SUSE, only 300G was usable and the other 20G is missing until now. The fdisk -l command info. is showed below:

Feb 25, 2011Currently I am running a dual boot with Windows 7 and openSUSE 11.3. Windows has two partitions, one for the system partition and another for the OS. I have 3 Linux partitions (swap, root, and home). Obviously I am running GRUB to boot, but this seems to be impacting my ability to install Windows 7 SP1. I would like to revert back to the Windows boot loader, install the Service Pack, and then revert back to GRUB. How do I do this?

May 2, 2011I had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

So my windows drive is now first, then my Ubuntu drive second.Its been a while so I'm wondering how involved / what would be the steps to get grub2 to chainload into windows7 (in my head I want to say I'm going to boot into the live cd, mount the windows disc and reinstall the loader to the windows drive since its the first disc in the chain?)

Dec 24, 2009If I understand correctly, there is no more "Install Linux as a second OS, and Windows will run as it is. Linux won't disturb it". If Grub is installed on MBR, Windows 7 will not install service pack.
If the MBR is left untouched during the installation of Linux, the active flag has to be switched from Windows's partition to Linux's partition. This again will prohibit Windows 7 from installing a service pack. Thus installing Linux as a second OS and giving the computer to somebody who is not expert in partitioning and booting will lead to trouble if Windows is regularly used. Is this correct, and is there a solution as to not creating worries for the Windows users by installing Linux?

However I would like to install windows beside Suse (for games and windows only apps). I used bootcamp to create a 200G partition for Suse, and I would like to partition the bootcamp further to install windows beside Suse, and choose the OS at boot time using rEFIt. I searched google and couldn't find a guide for installing windows 7 when linux is installed first.
1- I want to learn how to partition the boot camp drive using suse to create an empty partition for windows install.
2- I want to learn how to install windows 7 on the mentioned partition without harming any boot configurations, as I said I want to be able to choose from the OSes at boot time using rEFIt bare in mind that the current installed OSes are suse 11.3 and OS X.

Mar 29, 2011Hardware issue forced me to restore Win7. Installed EasyBCD to boot into openSUSE, no work. Boot puppy, it shows space where SUSE should be as unallocated space. I think Puppy doesn't see ext4 though. Can't boot live KDE off USB for some reason, though I originally installed from that exact medium. Tried ACPI=off and nomodeset. Error says trouble mounting clic filesystem, mounted as read only. Something like that. Then reboot 120secs, which it never actually does. I don't want to reinstall SUSE if I don't have to.

Apr 3, 2011I have an ASUS N82 model notebook with Windows 7 and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 GPU. I downloaded the openSUSE-11.4-DVD-x86_64.iso file and tried to run it from my desktop using Daemon Tools LITE software. The install program for the installer started up and let me progress all the way to the final screen at which point it starts extracting files and then I almost immediately get this error message: "Cannot exec bcdedit.exe"
I have done everything I know to do to make sure that I am signed in and running the install as an administrator. I even ran the command prompt as an administrator to make sure that I could run bcdedit.exe myself and it ran fine.

Jan 4, 2010I decided to install windoze 7 and it finally worked. It was complicated, I have two HDD's on cable select and the one I wanted M$ installed on was second in the series. So I changed that around and it finally installed. I then changed it back to the way it was and now of course grub works for SUSE but not M$. I get error #13. My Windows drive also does not show up in sysinfo:/. I went to terminal and ran fdisk -l and

Aug 21, 2010well, gonna straight-explain what I`ve here: had a Win7 64bit installed machine and created a D drive as I was intended to install Suse there (so it`s `Extended`) after succesfully installed SLED and finally restarted the laptop to see use Win7 again there was no Loader for me to choose which Operation System (I have another machine with XP,Ubuntu and Pardus - never had sucha problem)then I had to chose SLED of course but this time it didn`t bring me to the login page but to the Command Line of SLED, and the thing is that I can`t use command line on linux. tried several times and with failsafe login but stıll having command line and there is no Win7 to run on Loader.

Jan 2, 2010When trying to install 11.2 from DVD, the user information I entered at the beginning of the install gets lost. I get to the Automatic Configuration step at the end of the install where the computer needs to reboot, and it asks for my user ID and password (it shouldn't do that). It won't accept the user I created (always says login failed), but it will accept root. That really doesn't matter, because the Automatic Configuration step has done anything, and I have a busted install. I've tried the install 4 or 5 times, but it is always the same problem. I eventually reinstalled 11.1 without any problem (though I did have to click Use Entire Disk on the partition section so it would delete the ext4 partitions created by the 11.2 install and create ext3 partitions).

Of course windows created the 100 MB system partition. I left the rest unpartitioned. Windows installed okay. I then booted to the KDE FC12 Live CD and installed FC12. I specified to use the Free Space remaining on the HD. The installation finished but now only boots into FC12 and does not prompt me for the OS I want to boot.

The problem is that after installation of win 7 i lost the ability to boot form cd. In bios i still have cd set up to boot first and drive second, but win 7 did something that overrides bios set up. Now I want to remove win-7 and install 10.04 in its place I want the safe/proper procedure to do it if there is already a thread like this then direct me there as I searched and did not get it.
