I was reading the latest openSUSE news #140 under the kernel information and I found something I felt anyone interested in the future of Graphics Support in the kernel should read. It was very interesting for me to read and so maybe the same for you.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Install A Kernel Patch To Support On-board NVidia Graphics?

Mar 22, 2011

I am impressed with 11.4 and am happy that for the first time ever I don't need to install a kernel patch to support my on-board nVidia graphics. However, the on-board sound no longer works now. I don't know how to set it up in phonon. My device number 0 in phonon is MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S high definition audio, and I assume this is my nVidia on-board sound card. The driver information states snd-hda-intel.

How can I check what is wrong with it? It did work fine on 11.2 right up to the 11.4 installation. I do get system sounds (like the start-up and shut-down sounds), but nothing from any application, e.g., firefox playing a video. Based on the advice from another thread I tried: speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav This does not produce any sound, but gives the following information: speaker-test 1.0.24.2

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 96 to 1048576
Period size range from 32 to 349526
Using max buffer size 1048576

OpenSUSE :: Connection To Several International News Streams?

[URL].. is a TV player client, allowing connection to several international news streams(video/audio) from around the world. it is available for Linux, Mac as well as pervasive game systems. ran ok in 10.3 but seg faults in 11.3..after manually tinkering with its audio setup in ~/.openalrc it runs good here until the seg fault...sometime it runs five minutes, sometimes 25 minutes or more...i have been unable to detect the triggering event..started by executing 'livestation' in an open terminal always results(eventually) in "Segmentation fault" and nothing else as the client disappears..anyone else seen this?or, running with no problems?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Yesrterday's Kernel Upgrade Screws Up Graphics?

Mar 23, 2010

I'm used to kernel updates screwing up both my graphics drivers and my instaltion of parallels. These things break each and every time the kernel is updated. Normally, reinstalling makes the problem go away and I move on. Yesterday, Parallels got screwed and I fixed it by reinstalling but the graphic driver is yet to work.

For reference I am using OpenSUSE 11.2 64-Bit Gnome-Edition with an ATI Radeon 4650, since it probably makes a difference. For some reason the driver from the repo (ATI's repo) would not install and I got errors saying that it has a wrong signature and (ignoring that) I got another error saying it was corrupted. So I could not install as usual.

Instead I went at ATI's site and downloaded the latest driver. It installed but I lost the mouse cursor so I reinstalled the previous version which also installed but it not working properly, although I do have a mouse cursor.

glxinfo gives the following error:
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 136 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 24
Current serial number in output stream: 24

fglrxinfo outputs the exact same thing. OpenGL is not working in any way. Even the gears demo and desktop effects (which I tried to reactivate just to test, since I hate those things) simply do not work.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Intel I7 HD Graphics Gives Black Screen Sometimes On Boot Kernel 2.6.37 Rc7

Dec 30, 2010

Just a little background I have a sony vaio VPCZ119X laptop and have been struggling to get all components working under linux especially the intel graphics. I saw that once I upgraded to the latest available kernel release which currently is 2.6.37 rc7. The intel graphics is working, but sometimes when I boot I get a blank/black screen but seems to be lit up. All other functions seem working so for example I am able to login etc just that I dont see anything on the screen.

I have tried the following so far to identify the issue or isolate it:

- Switching to the console screens has no effect, still the black / blank screen.

- Restarting the system does not always immediately get the screen working, sometimes it takes a couple of reboots before the screen is available

- I have a switchable graphics with nVidia I never get this problem when I use the nvidia driver

- I have tried closing the lid etc as suggested in the below post without any change in output, will try further as there are other options available as well The "Black Screen" on Boot I see one difference between both the Xorg log files but I am not able to reason out why this happens hence I will just supply the files here and try not to theorize.

Xorg.0.log - This was the log output when I got the X display working Xorg.o.log.old - This was the log output when the X display was black/blank Also to highlight that I am using the latest kernel release that is still being tested I guess so maybe it is also a bug in the kernel?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 - Install An Older Kernel As Recent Kernel Is Not Compatible?

Feb 11, 2010

A few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.

My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.

How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.

In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot - After Installing New Graphics Drivers OpenSUSE 11.4

Jul 14, 2011

I have installed openSUSE 11.4, and I really like it compared to other linux versions I've tried, but I find it requires a bit more linux know-how.

Being fairly new to linux, it has been quite the effort to learn but I started getting the hang of things via online support and such. Lately I've been having some problems.

I need linux to run a TCAD program, and it requires some openGL functionality and was giving me errors when I tried entering the software related modeling GUI.

Anyhow, I thought it had to do with my graphics drivers, so I decided to update them via ATI proprietary driver. After doing this, the system booted me into the console rather than X.

I tried numerous online guides on how to fix the issues, by running all sorts of boot commands (nomodset), and I read the graphics driver theory, as well as trouble shooting ATI graphics.

In the process, I also installed a radeonhd-xorg11-something through YAST, and that caused a black screen altogether upon boot. I managed to boot into failsafe with x, and from there I removed it via YAST, however this did not resolve issues. I also deleted any xorg.cionf files in hopes that the system will default back to the radeon driver.

As it stands right now, I can only boot into my system via failsafe mode. I'm keeping the unit off for now as it's probably tired from all the hard reboots I had to do . If someone can help me resolve this issue, I can turn it on and enter any commands required, such as finding out the graphics card, the kernel, the driver currently running, etc and I can post it here.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 From DVD - Load Kernel Operation Hangs At 97% (using Both Normal And Safe Kernel)

Feb 23, 2010

I am an experienced Linux admin and have been using SuSE for many years. My development machine has had every version of SuSE since '02 and although it is a little old, is in good working order. (AMD
2400, 2 gig RAM, 160 Gig IDE disks - SuSE on disk 2) (OpenSuSE 11.1 with the latest kernel works perfectly. This install is on a spare HDD prior to doing a full install on my usual HDD.)

When I try to install SuSE 11.2 from DVD, the load kernel operation hangs at 97% (using both normal and safe kernel), however, I can install from live CD without any problem. I have tried the same DVD on a few "older" machines and had the same problem. I initially thought it was the actual DVD but re-burning has the same problem. I have also tried another DVD writer - same problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: Time Wrong In XEN Kernel But Right In Desktop Kernel?

Feb 11, 2010

I have a system running openSUSE 11.2 with Desktop and XEN kernel, as well as Windows 7 (not by choice though...). I have noticed a strange time issue, with Windows 7 and the desktop kernel the time is correct (like for example now: 1:32 PM) but in the XEN kernel it is ahead several hours (6:32 PM). If it was an issue between openSUSE and windows then I would think that it is a problem with the system clock but I don't know what would cause a time issue between kernels like that.

OpenSUSE Install :: Differences Between Kernel Default And Kernel Desktop?

Jul 21, 2010

differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.

However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.

OpenSUSE Install :: Graphics Card Driver For GMA HD?

Jun 25, 2010

I have unfortunately found myself unable to properly boot up openSUSE because I decided to buy the Acer Aspire with the i5 Processor.

I have the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) graphics card, and unfortunately from all my searching online and on openSUSE, I have been unable to find a driver for this that works for linux, and in addition I don't know how to install a driver outside of a GUI.

My openSUSE boots up to the boot choosing screen (regular openSUSE or failsafe), and then that nice list of functions being done is displayed, but as soon as the daemon has started, suddenly my screen goes blank and I am unable to do anything about it. Beyond this point, my OS loses all functionability, and while I can hear it computing, I am unable to actually tell WHAT it is computing. get a driver for this and to install this driver and get this GUI running, that would be great.

Perhaps my last post about this was too long and hence why nobody responded. So i will try and keep it simple and let the experts advise me.

I have tried installing an rpm that I got from rpm search. Namely xorg-x11-driver-video-xgi-1.5.0-6.1.i586 which seemed to install but when I did a query it said it was not installed, but when I tried to do an install again it said it was already installed ??

There is also a file called xserver-xorg-video-sis_0.9.3.orig.tar.gz which i got from this site. I have not managed to extract it properly yet but will look into that myself. It appears to have in it a makefile, so I presume it is source files and I could really do with some help in that.

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Live CD 11.4 X86-64 Graphics Performance?

May 20, 2011

I have an 11.2 laptop and thought it was time to upgrade to 11.4. I downloaded the 11.4 X86-64 live cd and thought that I would check how it ran on my 11.3 desktop. This is a core i5 760 with an Nvidia GT240 graphics card and 4GB of DDR3 ram. The 11.4 live system shows the nouveau driver. The graphics performance is terrible. In particular windows are very very slow to resize and often don't resize properly. There are also some artifacts in some graphics. I eventually downloaded Flash which did seem to work moderately well, especially in full screen mode. The screen resolution is 1920x1080. I have never seen a windowing system work so slowly

While I always use the Nvidia proprietary driver, I don't know how I can test it via a live CD. The Nvidia driver in the repository is the 270 version and I think that I have seen reports of severe problems with the 270 version so that needs to be tested too. I always install the nvidia driver the really easy way via yast

Has anyone any idea why the KDE Live graphics are so slow? I will not go anywhere near 11.4 unless the graphics system is very much faster. Is there any way to test the nvidia proprietary graphics driver without installing 11.4?

OpenSUSE :: Get The Package Ready To Install Graphics Card To The New Update?

Code:
Problem: nothing provides kernel-devel = 2.6.35-21 needed by kernel-syms-2.6.35-21.1.x86_64 Solution 1: do not install kernel-syms-2.6.35-21.1.x86_64 Solution 2: break kernel-syms by ignoring some of its dependencies Choose from above solutions by number or cancel [1/2/c] (c): c Now the vanilla kernel is 2.6.35-21 were as the "default" opensuse one is 2.6.35-20. I have googled and told opensuse download search engine to look for the 2.6.35-20. I cannot find it at all.

If I upgraded to the vanilla kernel without the opensuse patches would it make my machine unstable? Or can I tell it to break some of the dependencies?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: ATI Catalyst Graphics Driver Install Failure In 11.3

Sep 17, 2010

I tried to install the ATI proprietary driver for an HD 5800 (Catalyst for Linux 64 bit, v. 10.8). The two main instruction sites are:

SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE
SDB:ATI drivers - openSUSE

I chose the hard way method. I downloaded the driver. Restarted SuSE 11.3 in mode 3. And as SU followed the method above, including adding the zypper programmes (which found some already installed and which installed a whole lot more). When I then attempted to run the install (sh ./atidriver-install-10.8-x86.x86_64.run) and selected automatic mode. It completed 82% and stalled attempting to install "Postprocessing Kernel Module".

I pressed control c to kill the process and attempted to re-install using the manual mode and then using the build mode. In both instances, same outcome. When I rebooted, and entered my password, the desktop did not load but sent me back to the username/password page. I can't get back in. Does not matter as I have backed up my docs.

I decided to install the proprietary driver because the colours on the desktop corrupt after the 2nd boot following a clean install. i.e. on the initial boot the colours are fine. Second, this is the 3rd effort I have made to install the driver after a clean install of SuSE 11.3 and there is no change in outcome. So, my question: anyone any suggestion what is going on and how I can install the driver successfully? Or, do I not understand the new regime in SuSE 11.3 and should I not attempt to install a new driver.

OpenSUSE Install :: Graphics Card Driver / Everything Is Greyed Out (nothing To Be Selected)?

I recently installed SuSE 11.1 (64 bit) on my system

AMD Phenom II 940 3.0 Ghz;Biostar TA790GX 128M Motherboard with ATI Radeon HD 3300 Graphics card built in;
4 Gb (2*2 sticks) DDR2 800 MHz RAM

The installation went smoothly, But on first restart and login (and subsequent ones too!) I get a light purple screen with a skyblue box at top left corner, with xconsole written on it. when I Left click anywhere on the screen, I get a popdown with a number of options, of which only XTerm (bash shell) and exit (logout) options work. Now I know the HD 3300 graphics card drivers are not built into the SuSE 11.1 distribution, and I have already downloaded them (Linux ones)from ATI website. I login as Superuser, and type init 3 to go to a very basic screen, login as user, change to superuser again and then run the following file i downloaded from ATI:

sh ati-driver-installer-9-4-x86.x86_64.run

The result/output at the command prompt:

Created directory fglrx-install.ubanI5

.....(lot of dots)...
ati-driver-installer-9-4-x86.x86_64.run: line 295: ./ati-installer.sh: Permission denied Removing temporary directory: fglrx_install.ubanI5

Once again, i tried everything in superuser login.

Also I tried making changes via sax2 command, it doesnt seem to work. A window opens where I see that my graphics card has been detected but thats about it. nothing else in that option, everything is greyed out (nothing to be selected)
