OpenSUSE Install :: Type Of Kernel In OpenSUSE 11.2 / Kernel Optimized For Server Machine?
Dec 11, 2009
default in openSUSE 11.2 we have installed kernel-desktop. This kernel is optimized for the desktop.
What is the name of kernel optimized for server machine? In my case Firebird database + Apache + PHP?

I was doing a kernel update and can no longer boot into 11.3. I am dual booting with XP. I get Grub screen but no longer see Suse as a boot option, only Windows. I have tried to reinstall, but for some reason I can't get it to boot with DVD. So, is there a way that I can repair my computer without doing a reinstall?

I am an experienced Linux admin and have been using SuSE for many years. My development machine has had every version of SuSE since '02 and although it is a little old, is in good working order. (AMD
2400, 2 gig RAM, 160 Gig IDE disks - SuSE on disk 2) (OpenSuSE 11.1 with the latest kernel works perfectly. This install is on a spare HDD prior to doing a full install on my usual HDD.)
When I try to install SuSE 11.2 from DVD, the load kernel operation hangs at 97% (using both normal and safe kernel), however, I can install from live CD without any problem. I have tried the same DVD on a few "older" machines and had the same problem. I initially thought it was the actual DVD but re-burning has the same problem. I have also tried another DVD writer - same problem.

I have a system running openSUSE 11.2 with Desktop and XEN kernel, as well as Windows 7 (not by choice though...). I have noticed a strange time issue, with Windows 7 and the desktop kernel the time is correct (like for example now: 1:32 PM) but in the XEN kernel it is ahead several hours (6:32 PM). If it was an issue between openSUSE and windows then I would think that it is a problem with the system clock but I don't know what would cause a time issue between kernels like that.

differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.

A few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.
My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.
How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.
In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.

Intel Pentium 4 HT, 3000 MHz, Frontside 800 MHz/Cache 1 MB
3 GB Ram
AGP nVidia 7600GS/512 MB, nVidia driver 190.53, installed from yast.
PCI WLan TP-Link 951N (Atheros chipset, WLan N, driver ath9 was automatically installed)

first of all, please excuse my bad english. We rent a dedicatet server at Strato.de.I need to install VMWare Server. Actually this should be no Problem for me. I installed the server an patch. When I run the vmware-config.pl starts the problems:
Code:
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.3.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.3" anyway? [no] I submit "y".

Linux Kernel 2.6.38 was officially released on 3/15. This kernel upgrade promises to fix the driver issues for video cards with 1080P, and has a number of other great features. Any idea when this will be available for SuSE 11.3 & 11.4? Also, if this kernel proves to be a workable solution, are their plans for re-releasing 11.4 using this kernel?

what does kernel suffix mean? After OS installation and supplementary product installation I am discovering a set of boot alternatives and corresponding kernel versions. They have different suffixes: -pae, -default, -trace.
It appears that kernel *-pae is booting normally, while kernel *-default hungs in the middle of booting process being unable to discover certain disk or partition. Some products also have similar suffixes: -pae, -trace,-default. What does it mean? Shall I keep kernels that do not boot?

I currently have 2.6.31.8 installed on my netbook which causes problems, causing the netbook to freeze.
So, I downgraded to 2.6.31.5 and is working properly. Using Yast, I had marked 2.6.31.8 as do not install but after several days of use (by my kids) 2.6.31.8 mysteriously comes back and the system freeze again
How can I have 2.6.31.8 and 2.6.31.5 both installed on the same system so that I can avoid the trouble to manually reinstall 2.6.31.5?

Following a zypper dup and turning my computer off for a few hours; when I rebooted, I got a message saying, "error: you need to load the kernel first press any key to continue . . . " And then it goes back to the grub menu for of the same if I select openSUSE 11.2.SystemrescueCD won't boot it. I've tried to "repair installed system" and "rescue" with my openSUSE 11.1 DVD -- it won't even acknowledge (as it were) the presence of 11.2 or the system on the other hard drive (though it does recognise the partitions). The PCLinuxOS 2009 KDE and GNOME live CDs will redo the MBR of installed systems (at least, as far I know, PCLinuxOS is one of systems). In my experience, the 11.2 live CD won't. I was hoping the 11.1 DVD would. What to do?

I have tried to 'rpm -ivh' the 2.6.34-8 image to the 2.6.31-5 on my Suse 11.2. Without any luck, rpm goes fine, however at the next bootup, then udev is about to be initialized, the machine goes down (don't see any message).
But if I install the MileStone 7 of 11.3 on the same machine, it works just fine.
Are there any scripts/howtos I have to follow if I upgrade from 2.6.31 to 2.6.34?

Now my desktop can't even boot and says
Code:
Want me to fall back to /dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HD725016GLA380_GEK830RBTV12MA-part2? (Y/n)
Both options got me nowhere. how to debug this situation?

I installed the new 2.6.34.4-0.1 security update earlier today. Now, the login screen no longer responds to my keyboard. In particular, I cannot type my password to log in. If I reboot into failsafe mode, the keyboard works and I can log in.
I'm running 11.3 on a white MacBook 4,1.

I received a kernel update a few days ago. When I try to boot with kernel 2.6.37, I get a few errors saying that a volume couldn't be mounted and that /lib/modules/2.6.37-desktop/modules.dep couldn't be found. I'm then left with a minimal terminal prompt.
Is this a common problem? If not, I'll try to take a picture of the error so that you can see exactly what happened. I can still boot with kernel 2.6.34 like I could before the update.

but for 11.4 it is empty. I can see that for 11.3 the 2.6.38 kernel is already built. For 11.4 there is only the Kernel:/HEAD repo. Are we going to have a kernel:/stable repo for 11.4?
