I recently installed ubuntu 10.04 on a new system and installed Virtual box to run a virtal Windows environment. I also added an additional 2 Tb hard disk to the system that will be used to store the virtual machine(s). I managed to add the hard drive in ubuntu and it is recognized as DriveD_ in the Media folder (don't ask me how i did it ... trial and error). I am the owner of this folder. In the media folder there is also a folder named DriveD, and this is an empty folder. The owner of this folder is Root. When I start Virtualbox, Windows starts up normally, and recognizes the second drive D (which I partitioned and formatted before). After closing the Windows, Virtual box and Unbuntu, the mystery begins. When I start Ubuntu, the DriveD_ folder is not visible and I cannot start the Windows virtual machine (error message: VD: error VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND opening image file). When using Tux Commander, I do not see DriveD_. When I use Nautilus to go to the same Media folder, both folders are visible (DriveD and DriveD_). When I open Drive_, the Virtual machine files are present. After doing this, I can start Virtual Box and start Windows normally. I think it has someting to do with the ownership of the second hard drive that I added (maybe I made a mistake attaching it in ubuntu?) Has anyone experienced this before?

I installed OS11.4 on my old laptop, Compaq Armada E500., 512MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility. During installation I chose "minimal server" and added some development packages, lxde and a little more. I chose to start in runlevel 3 which is full networking without X. Still, when computer is booted it tries to start Xorg which doesn't work because of some problem w driver. The start-up seems to stop there, it never loads completely - seems most things in runlevel 3 are not started (see below) I can manually login on laptop and fix it - but never permanently, same thing again after reboot.
I have checked /etc/inittab & yast - both states default runlevel is 3. I have checked services to be started both directly, browsing directory /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/, and with YaST, it is very clear X should not load during boot. But, as said, it does.. I don't really care about the driver problem right now, I can fix that later when I have more time. So how do I stop X from getting started automatically?
More info, if needed: The installation also stopped with message on tty1 "Starting YaST2" and tty8 showing errors with graphics driver (mach64). The system seemed to be installed though, so I simply rebooted (issuing "reboot" from tty2).
[Code]....
I'm not completely sure where it stops, network is configured but keyboard is wrong and mysql & everything after is not started, so somewhere between S02network and S06kbd. I'm going to use it as a server for testing purposes so no X is actually needed - however I do want to have X & lxde installed just in case, my Internet connection at home is terribly slow so I need most things I might need in the future installed today.

Can I copy my virtual box VM windows XP virtual-machine files to another Linux computer and run the machine on that computer while I keep on running it on the original computer?
This question is about technical possibilities, not licences.

Has anyone gotten XP Mode to work in Win 7- while Win 7 is running in VBox? Everything installs seemingly error free- XP Mode, and the two updates. I then start Win XP Mode. The computer goes through 25 minutes or so of setting up XP mode for 'first use'. At the end, a message appears: "Could not complete setup. Please try again". In Win7, I've removed XP Mode from Programs and Features, and reinstalled. No change.
Using 11.3, Oracle/Sun VBox 3.2.8 with guest additions, and Win7 Ultimate with the three required downloads (after selecting Win7 Ultimate 32bit and English) Download Windows XP Mode

Has anyone successfully installed opensuse (any version) on an xseries 342? (Single 1.13Ghz cpu, 512Mb, 2 x 18.2Gb scsi, Serveraid-4MX raid controller).Any problems? Does it detect the scsi controllers and raid controller? I'm d/ling the serveraid support cd right now. It contains the raid bios and the support files for suse linux enterprise server. Will they work with opensuse? I have opensuse 10.1 on 5 cds. I can't find anywhere to d/l 11.2 in cd isos, only as 1 large dvd iso, which is no good as the 342 only has a cd reader, and it's a pain splitting dvd isos to cd isos.
I'm hoping to turn this old beast into a web server, preferably running LAMP (apache2 etc). I've already got a Poweredge 2550 running Ubuntu 9.4 server, but the IBM is a different kettle of fish, with Ubuntu crashing during install because of their disc naming conventions. I'm hoping opensuse should be ok as the IBM has support for SLED. It's either opensuse or fedora, which I'm not a great fan of.

I'm having a strange issue with a RHEL 5.2 system with SE Linux. I can scp files to it, but I always have to hit ctrl+c to end the scp process. The file transfers 100% and everything, but scp just hangs there for a long time, or until I kill it. If I wait until it dies on its own, its exit value is 1. I'm not sure if it'll help, but here is the output when I add the verbose option. $ scp -v create_users.sh rhel5.2-server: Executing: program /usr/bin/ssh host rhel5.2-server, user (unspecified), command scp -v -p -t .

I just upgrade to KDE 4.3 and it is great release, one problem I have found with it is that The Strigi Desktop File Indexer does not want to start. The error that I get is "Strigi service failed to initialize, most likely due to an installation problem.", does anyone here know if Strigi logs things like this and were? "We must plan for freedom, and not only for security, if for no other reason than only freedom can make security more secure."

So after a series of uninstalling and reinstalling VirtualBox to get the updated version, I was able to get it installed and working but it seemed to be crashing my computer as everytime i walked away for 10 minutes and came back, it would be at the login screen. It never did it while I was on it though so I never saw any errors. Now after a couple days of that... Whenever I start it I get an error:
Failed to create VirtualBox COM object
The application will now terminate.
Could not load the settings file '/home/user/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml'

I had installed openSuSE 11.0 and then installed XEN using 'Install hypervisor and Tools' which is present in Computer -> YaST -> Virtualization.
After that I rebooted the machine in XEN mode[Dom 0]. There I installed a Virtual machine[Dom U] with OpenSuSE 11.0 Operating system using the option 'Create Virtual machine'which is present in Computer -> YaST -> Virtualization.
VM[Virtual Machine] got installed successfully and started running in TightVNC. I shutdown the VM and restarted it and it started running successfully.
After that I shutdown XEN[Dom 0] and restarted the machine in XEN mode again to run Virtual machine[Dom U]. But this time I got the below error when I selected the 'Run' option in installed VM.

I've performed a new installation of openSUSE 11.3 and I see a lag while starting Opera - close to 10 - 15 seconds.... I didn't have a similar issue with 11.2.... I notice this not only in KDE but in Gnome as well.... This happens only with Opera and not any other application.... These are the details about my Opera installation:
Code:
Version 10.60 Internal
Build 6386
Platform Linux
System x86_64, 2.6.34-12-desktop Can anyone else using Opera confirm if they're facing a similar issue.... If not I can submit the logs at Opera website to see what might be the problem...

I upgraded one of my Squeeze installations to Wheezy, but after selecting it in grub, nothing is displayed on screen: no CLI and no GUI. I tried Ctrl + Alt + F[1-7] and I got nothing. My laptop is Acer Aspire 7715Z. I am attributing this to module as there seems to be disk activity, but without a screen, I cannot be certain.

I hit some trouble upgrading from FC 10 to FC 12 using the netinst CD. I had previously successfully upgraded the system from FC5 to FC10 with the same method - that time everything went well. At first the upgrade went well - the installation program found my FC installation and detected the partitions right. The problem appeared when about 90% of the rpm's were installed. Anaconda was complaining about a fatal error with a package and quit.
After rebooting and restarting the installation program it does not recognize my partitions anymore and suggests I'd format them for a fresh installation. As all my data is there I'd rather not do that. I then rebooted again and chose "Repair" from the installation menu. I got to the console and noticed that all partitions mounted cleanly and all the data seems to be there. Trying to reboot from the hard disk almost works. The system gets up, goes through grub, gets the kernel running and mounts the disks but fails to launch Xorg.
I get to a terminal login from here by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2. When I type the user name and press enter the terminal seems to crash - does not ask for the password but simply returns to the user name query. An error message flashes just after pressing enter but too quickly for me to read. When I boot from CD again and go to the terminal via the "Repair" option the previous events can be seen from /var/log/messages. Xorg tries to start and stops trying after a certain amount of failures. After that it says this:
Code:
init: prefdm main process (2123) terminated with status 1
init: prefdm main process ended, respawning
init: prefdm respawning too fast,stopped
[code]....
My best guess is that this happens because the upgrade was aborted before it completed and hence some necessary rpm's were left out. I figured I could possibly fix this by updating the packages with yum from the terminal if I got to log in. What should I do now? Could I for example try and manually copy some missing files to the disk as I can access it via the repair option?

I know, as of 2008, no support, but I'm wanting LTS so I'm trying to get Ubuntu 10. I'm trying to use 7.04,s CD/DVD creator to burn the Iso to a CD. I've tried desktop, and alternate, both by bittorrent, and every time I attempt to burn to a disc, it takes 10 minutes with useless spinning, saying "Preparing to write disc" and then it stops, locking the CD drive and having me to restart the system to get it running again. I've run on 2.0x, 1.0x, and 8.0x, all failing. I could really use help. I'm running a Dell Dimension 4500S, Pentium 4, 512MB ram, with a Cyberdrive CW058D CD-R/RW, SCSI, and IS a burner.
