I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.

I updated from v11.2. to v11.3.I have 4 workspaces defined. The Gnome panel shows only in the first workspace! When I switch to another one, the panel disappears. As you may imagine, this is rather inconvenient. Once I am in another workspace other than 1, my only option is to reboot since there is no way to navigate anywhere. How do I set up the Gnome panel to show in all workspaces?
I'm having a lot of trouble installing OpenSUSE 11.4 on a home PC. Currently the PC has Windows Vista and I've convinced the owner to let me put Linux on it. When I boot from the Live KDE CD, though, it fails to function properly. I can see the screen where I choose whether I'd like to install, boot from the CD or boot from the hard drive. No matter what I choose, the screen afterwards is unreadable - it's all kinds of jumbled, unreadable lines. The problem appears even if I change the resolution to all kinds of other resolutions. If I go into text mode and say that I'd like to install, it goes through a startup routine that looks like I'm starting the computer completely in text mode. Afterwards it wants me to log in, and I can logon as root and perform commands, but I've got no way that I can see of installing it on my system's hard drive so that I can have it boot OpenSUSE from the HD.

So I downloaded the latest livecd Gnome and created a usb install using imagewriter with suse. I can boot to the initial menu asking if I want to boot the livecd or install. If I choose either it will begin to show a lot of things on the screen scrolling really fast and then the screen will go black. I've waiting up to about 15 minutes with no result.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI can't log into my normal user account anymore, though I can log in with root without any problem. When I enter my normal user name and password, the screen blinks, a black page appears and after a couple of seconds I get the login screen again. I deleted /tmp files but no changes. I tried to login using command mode. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log into root in command mode, then ran init3, then switched user to my normal user and ran startx. It worked and I logged into my normal account, but I can not do this process every time. So, what is the problem? How can I solve this problem? I used to work with my normal user flawlessly. I installed a bunch of software and also copied some folders to my home directory, but I don't know whether these activities caused the problem or not. I'm using KDE4 under openSUSE 11.2.

Same thing happens with Try Ubuntu without installing.. 2) Tried on Lenovo T410 and Dell 1330. issue exactly remains the same.3) Tried it on a VM Worksation 6.0, "This kernel requires an x86-64 cpu but only detected an i686 error is popping up". So thought its a Ubuntu x32 an compatibility, hence downloading the 64 bit now. Will burn and check it later.

I can't browse any of partition with any of browsers inside liveCD including dolphin. When i try to access it says: There is no application installed that can open files of the type block device (inodelockdevice). Do you want to try to install one? Works fine in ubuntu with Open drivers (radeon)...I would really like to make it possible on live CD.. because I dont wanna install and then see that I can not enable it...I know that most driver manipulations need restart.. so live session can not do that...But can you say if I could even make it happen on Raden X600? During this week, I installed Debian twice on this system using NetInst, connected trough ethernet. Yesterday, I noticed the ethernet controller wasn't listed by lspci. I restarted, it appeared but didn't work. I turned off the system, started it a bit later and the device worked normally. This odd behavior has happened during the last twenty four hours. The ethernet controller appears and disappears. I enabled the "Boot from LAN" BIOS option to check the availability of the device right upon start and I'd say there's a 50% chance that it doesn't appear. I posted this message connected through the ethernet device.
I guess I should return the laptop because of this problem but I know very little about hardware and I wanted to ask first.
I've currently have opensuse 11.3 installed on my system and I would like to do a new fresh install of opensuse 11.4. I therefore downloaded the DVD 11.4 x64 install. However, when booting the kernel from the DVD (that leads to the installation procedure) I obtain the following error message "unable to handle kernel paging request". The system then stops and I need to perform a hard reset to restart again. The same happens if I try do boot from the live gnome CD. Thus, I'm unable to install opensuse 11.4 at all due to this problem. A possible solution would be to perform a hot update (i.e. changing repositories in my 11.3 and perform a zypper refresh and zypper dup). But I'm a bit scared of doing this since this will install the problematic kernel. how to circumvent this problem ? Is there any updated version of the live CD? I've been able to install opensuse 11.4 x64 without problems at home. Now I'm trying to install it at work. The current kernel (at work) is:

I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install openSUSE on a dell Latitude XT all day, and every time I tried to live boot, I got a blank screen. I finally decided to do a text install and I got it installed, but now I get the same result from booting off of the splash screen.
I can boot into text mode fine (still) but for whatever reason, it bombs as soon as I tell it to load the GUI. I have a 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 3GB RAM, and an ATI mobility chip (2000 series, maybe?) I had the same problem with Ubuntu, and since I like openSUSE just as well, I figured I'd try it because I at least could do a text install from my liveCD.
Installing 11.2 from KDE LiveCD on an IBM ThinkCenter with 3.2Gb CPU and 1Gb RAM. Ubuntu 9.04 on first two partitions. I go through the configuration, click to 'install': Install display bars remain blank. After 2-3 minutes, black screen with scroll of attempted installation pieces and the error message: "Respawning too fast. Disabled for 5 min." Freeze.
Other posts mention problem with init. But this is happening with the install so not able to address that. No apparent md5chksum for LiveCDs. No mention of this problem in installation help guide. Does anyone know how to deal with this? If you need more info, I will provide. Though it seems this is not an unusual problem when booting an installed system, there's no mention of it happening during installation.
I want to make a clean install of 10.04 instead of just upgrading from Karmic.However when I run the boot cd I get the new Ubuntu boot up screen (with the five dots) but after a while I get a black screen and at the same time the cd stops running in the drive.The only thing I can do is pressing down the start button until my computer shuts down.I do get the menu to choose to run the live cd or make a new installation, but whatever I choose, I end up with the black screen.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 and noticed that right click stopped working on some applications.
Usually, there are two ways to select items on the right click context menu:
a) press and release right click, hover over option, press and release again
b) press and hold right click, hover over option, release right click
I lost option a). No matter how fast I press and release the right click button, it will select the first option on the menu as soon as I release it. So for example, the first option on the context menu on the chrome browser is "back". So if I try to open the context menu it will just go back. Because it selects the back option as soon as I release the right mouse button.
So far I only noticed this on Chrome and Eclipse. Firefox and the other default ubuntu apps are working properly.
Googling it, I found some other people with this issue, but no solution. Any idea what this could be about and how to fix it?
i have just put a Geforce 7300 GT graphic card into my machine the problem is the max resolution I can get is 1024x768 at 60 hz the screen is a benq fp71g+. also the screen goes blank when i click on the display icon in system settings. i know that the screen can be run at 1280x1024 so I don?t know where the problem is.

Changed to 3 different mice with the same problem. I've just worked out that switching to console and back (CTRL + ALT + F1) then login and CTRL+F7 fixes the menu?? So I'm guessing this could be a bug with something gnome related?

Im trying to install fedora 11 from the live CD and when i get into the CD meny where it says "boot" and "press tab for boot options" i press enter. then a bunch lines flash across the screen with a lot of error messages. then the fedora loading bar at the bottom loads. hangs for about 1 minute at the very end. then the GMD screen appears. But the GMD screen is all out of place and its patchy as if my graphics card was causing some kind of error

When it was started i saw the icon of NetBeans IDE 6.8, then I tried to open it, but all in vain. A screen opens for a few seconds and then it disappears. I think it is the problem of improper installation. And now I m totally unable to uninstall that bundle.
