OpenSUSE :: OpenSUSE 11.3 GNOME Workspace Shortcuts

Feb 14, 2011

On the default GNOME installation, I noticed there were no option in Keyboard Shortcuts to bind keys to switch to specific workspaces (I.E. <ctrl>1 to switch to workspace 1, <ctrl>2 for workspace 2, etc).

I tried editing the entries in GNOME Configuration Editor under apps->metacity->global_keybindings, but the bindings weren't working.

how to set these? I'm somewhat new to openSUSE and Linux in general.

OpenSUSE :: Workspace Switcher Bugged After Gnome 2.32 Upgrade?

Dec 18, 2010

After doing the upgrade per this thread my gnome panel gets bugged when the workspace switcher applet is attached to it. Also the Cairo Dock bugs out with the workspace switcher applet attached to it. I can change desktops with key commands fine. It would just be nice if this could be fixed. I am sticking with gnome 2.32 because of my affinity with Evolution which performs better in 2.32.

OpenSUSE Install :: Gnome Panel Disappears When Switching To Another Workspace

Jul 16, 2010

Linux 2.6.34-12-desktop x86_64
Gnome desktop

I updated from v11.2. to v11.3.I have 4 workspaces defined. The Gnome panel shows only in the first workspace! When I switch to another one, the panel disappears. As you may imagine, this is rather inconvenient. Once I am in another workspace other than 1, my only option is to reboot since there is no way to navigate anywhere. How do I set up the Gnome panel to show in all workspaces?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Applications Recognize Gnome Shortcuts For Multimedia Keys?

Jan 8, 2011

Recently I installed MPlayer with its default gui and its interfaces SMPlayer and GnomeMPlayer. When I'm using GnomeMPlayer it responds to multimedia keys as configured in Gnome shortcuts, even if it's minimized or running in another virtual desktop. But it doesn't happen to the other two gui's mentioned above. I have also noticed that native Gnome applications or with Gnome support like Banshee and Rhythmbox rspond to multimedia keys even when the gui is closed and they are running only in the system tray. But it never occurs in non-Gnome applications like VLC, MPlayer and others. Jetaudio wich responds to these keys in MS Windows running under Wine doesn't even recognize them.

So I came to the conclusion that only native Gnome applications or with Gnome support recognize multimedia keys because, as it seems, they receive the signal from Gnome configurations. Others applications doesn't do so. Here is my question: Is there some way to make all applications recognize the configuration of Gnome multimedia keys shortcuts? (Of course it would not be fine if they recognized ALL Gnome shortcuts because they could conflict with shortcuts from another applications. The idela would be that they recognize ONLY Gnome multimedia shortcuts.)

General :: Keyboard Shortcuts To Manage Windows/workspace On KDE And RDP Connection

Jul 29, 2010

On PC-BSD 8.1 (KDE) I have four workspaces. I want to launch rdesktop 1.6 in one of them, full screen if possible (I'll settle for nearly-full in a window if I have to), and be able to do the following:

Switch between windows in the remote session using Alt+Tab. Switch between local workspaces using either the default Ctrl+F1 or what I've switched it to, my preferred Alt+F1.

It seems if I use the -K option, I get 2 but not 1. If I don't, I get 1 but not 2. Is there no way to do this? How can I tell rdesktop to send or not send a specific key combination?

After updating some of my packages to the newer versions, I restarted my computer so that I could experience the full effect of the update. When I attempted to login, Plasma Workspace crashes and nothing loads. I am forced to use another window manager to login into the system, and when I investigated into this problem by typing plasma-desktop in the command terminal, I receive this error:

OpenSUSE :: Create Shortcuts From Exe / Bin Files?

May 27, 2011

I just installed SUSE 11.4/KDE4.6 and some apps - including the pgAdmin3 GUI client app for PostgreSQL database. AFAIK the apps were installed and the correct files appear in their respective folders.

One of the progs I need is pgAdmin3 which exists in the /usr/bin folder. However when I try to launch this from the app launcher the file is not found. (If I start from a terminal command it works correctly).

I'd like to be able to create either a shortcut or app menu entry to launch this app. However if I right click on the file (in the Dolphin fm) there is no 'Create Shortcut' option. AFAIK I though this used to work.

OpenSUSE :: KDE/Kwin: On Keyboard Shortcuts & Ctrl + F10?

Jan 26, 2010

I am trying to find out where in the system are the files that store information on the following: 1. keyboard shortcuts, and 2. which applications and which windows were open before the session ended. Regarding (2): I really like the fact that when I log back in, OpenSuse pops up all the windows that I had open before I last logged out. I know that this information must be stored somewhere. And most probably in my home folder. But I can't seem to find it in ~/.kde or ~/.kde4 Regarding (1): Again, I really like the Mac-OS style behavior that one gets with Ctrl+F9/F10. But sometimes I invoke it inadvertently when - as far as I can remember - my fingers were on the trackpad only. I have not been able to figure out how I do it. But I would like to be able to do it consciously - without pressing Ctrl+F9/F10. Does anyone know what could be happening. i have an HP Pavilion dv4 laptop with an otherwise annoyingly sensitive track pad.

OpenSUSE :: Personal Settings - Global Keyboard Shortcuts

Jan 28, 2011

I'm new to Linux. I'm running openSUSE 11.3 with both the Gnome and KDE desktops installed, but so far I'm only using Gnome. I was looking for a way to assign sound volume increase/decrease to some keyboard keys instead of having to click on the speaker icon at the bottom of the screen. I found what I included in the Title of this message. Under the Global Keyboard Shortcuts was an item for each increase and decrease sound volume. These were set to (I believe) meta+ and meta-, respectively.

I changed them to F12 and F11, respectively (to match my Apple keyboard). After the changes, I started a game which takes over the entire screen (which is why I wanted to assign the volume to keys in the first place) to see if the changes worked. They did not! So, I tried to go back and change them to something else and now I can't even access Global Keyboard Shortcuts at all. I keep getting the following error:

Sorry - System Settings
Failed to contact the KDE global shortcuts daemon
Message: Could not get owner of name 'org.kde.kglobalaccel': no such name
Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner

What's up and how do I recover from this (if I even care)? Also, how do I assign volume increase/decrease to keys?

OpenSUSE :: Automatically Set Shortcuts On New User's Desktop On Account Creation?

Aug 28, 2010

I've used it recreationally in the past but am now attempting to deploy an OpenSUSE LTSP server in my wife's computer lab at her school. really like to make it easy for her to give the kids instructions for the day via a text file/pdf located on the kid's desktop. What I'd like to do since there's 500 kids that she teaches is create a shared folder for each grade that she just drops the assignment instructions into. I'd like to avoid having to add a link manually in each user's /home/*/desktop folder, so is there an easy way to do this?

In case the above isn't clear...
1) Create folder on teacher's desktop that is set to share
2) Create a link on each user's desktop to enable them to access said folder
3) Ideally, all new users will have a specific folder based on which usergroup they belong to (1st grade, 2nd grade, etc

Ubuntu :: Set Workspace Names Missing In Gnome 10.10 Maverick?

Nov 7, 2010

What has happened to the option to display names of each workspace on the lower panel bar?

Normally it was just a case of 'right click' any of the workspace and selecting 'Preferences', setting number of workspaces required and then using the name listbox to name each to desired title. In Maverick only the number of work places can be set; the list of names facility has been deleted from display. The current workspace name displays in the tooltip display as "workspace n", but there seems to be no easy way to change this title.

In 'gconf-editor' under schemas>apps>workspace_switcher_applet>prefs>displ ay_workspace_names it only gives the system message "...can't be edited..."

OpenSUSE :: Opensuse 11.4/gnome - Most Gui Apps Not Working With Gtk Error - Cannot Open Display: ::1:1.0

I recently installed opensuse 11.4 on a remote server. It has GNOME installed as a desktop. The problem I am experiencing is that when logged in through VNC, most of the GUI apps are not functioning, especially ones that require root privs. Example: The Add/Create users context does not function. After you supply root pw, nothing happens. If you launch it from a terminal, you see this:

jjmuw@g01:~> xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2 users
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "::1:1.0".

(y2base:4872): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: ::1:1.0

Followed by a hang. This is also affecting things like the Xen configuration contexts (creating/managing VMs).
