I want to use Plasma workspace that comes in KDE on my F12 running GNOME. I don't intend to shift to KDE but would love to use Plasma workspace in gnome.I found some links but they were Ubuntu specific and didn't work in F12 for me.

I am looking to turn off Plasma Workspace and keep it off! Today I was informed by a family member that their desktop had drastically changed. After investigating this, I had noticed that they were now running what was called Plasma Workspace. I am truly baffled right now as to how this was activated/turned on for only 1 out of 5 users on my computer. None of them are computer savvy, so it would also help me out considerably if I knew how this was turned on without the use of the terminal.

I have just did some recent updates and when i did that, i wanted to have the full effect of the updates.Once i restarted, It came up with a black screen, had a couple of windows open(because i had them open before.) All i can do is enter windows, I am on Kubuntu 9.10. There is some blocked updates and one is Kubuntu-Desktop. But i can't get it.

When I attempted to login, Plasma Workspace crashes and nothing loads. I am forced to use another window manager to login into the system, and when I investigated into this problem by typing plasma-desktop in the command terminal, I receive this error:

I'm working with Opensuse 11.2 and using gnome. I used to scroll between the workspaces in ubuntu, an in KDE it also works on Suse, but it lacks in gnome. I tried some settings in the settingmanager (see Screenie) but it still won't work. Is it a bug or another setting I've overlooked?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am an old XFCE fan, but would like to give Gnome a serious try (it has several things I like a lot).One XFCE feature I am missing is the intuitive capability to drag a window directly to another workspace. I did a bit of research and installed compiz (I am running debian testing on my laptop), but I am still unable to drag windows to another workspace.
Maybe I should tick the right option in compiz configuration manager, but I do not know where to start from. note that I am not after any eyecandy, I just would like to have this cute little feature of XFCE in my gnome environment.
After doing the upgrade per this thread my gnome panel gets bugged when the workspace switcher applet is attached to it. Also the Cairo Dock bugs out with the workspace switcher applet attached to it. I can change desktops with key commands fine. It would just be nice if this could be fixed. I am sticking with gnome 2.32 because of my affinity with Evolution which performs better in 2.32.

gnome-terminal -t mytitle; wmctrl -r mytitle -t 3
but this just causes the terminal not to launch.
What has happened to the option to display names of each workspace on the lower panel bar?
Normally it was just a case of 'right click' any of the workspace and selecting 'Preferences', setting number of workspaces required and then using the name listbox to name each to desired title. In Maverick only the number of work places can be set; the list of names facility has been deleted from display. The current workspace name displays in the tooltip display as "workspace n", but there seems to be no easy way to change this title.
In 'gconf-editor' under schemas>apps>workspace_switcher_applet>prefs>displ ay_workspace_names it only gives the system message "...can't be edited..."
Ok, so after not being able to run KDE on my computer (Because of internet issues) I want to use this guide to run both side by side. The guide is here on the Ubuntu Forums. But it says "This is for Karmic". Has anyone used this guide on lucid?

I updated from v11.2. to v11.3.I have 4 workspaces defined. The Gnome panel shows only in the first workspace! When I switch to another one, the panel disappears. As you may imagine, this is rather inconvenient. Once I am in another workspace other than 1, my only option is to reboot since there is no way to navigate anywhere. How do I set up the Gnome panel to show in all workspaces?

I like to have my C++ IDE in workspace 2, my Java IDE in workspace 3, and my email, browser and miscellaneous in workspace four. I also use a shell script that executes upon log in code...
Of course currently it all opens in the current workspace... Is there a way for me to specify which workspace each command should start in?
Ideally I would like to set a keyboard shortcut to open a set of applications. The applications (mainly different gnome-terminals) should be opened in different, previously defined workspaces. I had a look around but could not find a simple solution (maybe it could be done in devilspie but I would like to avoid that).If I limit myself only to gnome-terminal and instead of using the keyboard shortcuts call the application in the shell the placement of the terminal can be done by using "--geometry" (see "man gnome-terminal" and "man X") e.g. "gnome-terminal --geometry 50x20+200+300". wmcrtl show me that my 6 workspaces are treated as one desktop (my interpretation - maybe wrong):

I use the Gnome Classic DE in 11.04. Last night, safe-upgrade made a small number of package upgrades (three or four). When I rebooted my PC, this morning, my workspace switcher (the four tiny squares in the bottom panel on the right side of the screen) are gone. I use them regularly.Also, is there any history to identify what packages were upgraded last night so I can look for bugs?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI believe I may have found a bug in Unity. Under the right circumstances an application will jump from the workspace where I left them to my current workspace. This is most noticeable with VirtualBox. I built an Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine so that I could test out new packages before I push them out to the rest of my machines. But the window for the virtual machine constantly appears in my current workspace. It may take a few minutes, or 30 minutes, but it will happen.
I can kind of understand it if a new window appears, but at least with VirtualBox, this happens on a running virtual machine seemingly randomly.
Running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit.Is there a way to setup each workspace to have different icons on each workspace. Example:
Workspace 1 = Internet icon stuff (IM, Browsers, Etc...)
Workspace 2 = Multimedia icons (Video Editors, Music Clients)
Is there any way to have workspaces on multiple rows without the workspace switcher added to a panel? I have limited screen space so i want to try and remove any unnecessary items. I have tried using a drawer, but the workspace application is not loaded until the drawer is opened once. Also note I am not running compiz as the computer is a netbook.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn the default GNOME installation, I noticed there were no option in Keyboard Shortcuts to bind keys to switch to specific workspaces (I.E. <ctrl>1 to switch to workspace 1, <ctrl>2 for workspace 2, etc).
I tried editing the entries in GNOME Configuration Editor under apps->metacity->global_keybindings, but the bindings weren't working.

The desktop stops working, the panel stops working.. but compositing, desktop cube etc all work fine.I can still launch a program with Alt-F2.When I try and kill it (to restart) using 'killall plasma' / 'kill -9 <pid> / 'kill -15 pid' from a terminal, nothing happens, the process keeps running. If I leave it for about 30 mins it suddenly dies, allowing me to run 'plasma' from a terminal - then everything is back to normal.
If I log out and try to log back in again, I get a black screen. Only way to fix it is either to kill it and wait for 30 mins or so, or totally reboot the computer.Tail of the xsessions error file:

I had Fedora 10 running for since its release, was planning to skip Fedora 11. Well, I shorted my first RAID drive. Was unrepairable. Therefore I installed Fedora 11. I can not find the comic strips options in the KDE Desktop Plasma thingy, upper right of your screen. Used to read UserFriendly, Snoopy and Garfield daily.

I noticed that after a few days of work the plasma-desktop process is eating abnormal quantities of memory - resident size can grow up to 1 GB, by then KDE gets so unresponsive that you have to restart the session anyway.
I don't use desktop effects and no plasmoids either (even got rid of the folder view of desktop), the graphics are Intel 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller with the default (intel) driver. I have dual monitor setup (1600x1200 and 1024x786), to get them work correctly I had to come up with a custom xorg.conf and xrandr (if someone thinks xorg.conf contents can be relevant, I can post them, too).
I've seen reports of memory leaks in versions 4.2, but none so severe as is my case.
Below is the top command (sorted by RSS) after just 5 days of usage, showing plasma-desktop consuming growing towards 500MB:
How to stop it consuming so much RAM? This is a real annoyance, since it slows down the whole machine because of induced swapping.
Since I upgraded from F13 to F14, I no longer get thumbnails of windows when hovering the mouse above the taskbar entry. I have all the appropriate optionsjust no thumbnails.Anyone else experience this? I can't find any similar issues in this forum or Google.

The whole desktop freezes when a plasma widget pops up - like opening the menu or plugging in a disk and the mount options are shown. The X server still runs fine (Mouse and Keyboard are still working). Afterwards everything works fine again, I can even use the widget. I also tried a fresh install, and with the noveau driver the problem wasn't there, only after I installed the nvidia driver the problem reappeared again. Desktop effects are diabled. When I try killing plasma-desktop and restarting it from the command line, the desktop also freezes for a short time again, and I get teh following output:

I couldn't find anything helpful in Xorg.0.log or dmesg/syslog. I used nvidia-settings to configure xorg. I have a nvidia 6600 GT. If you need more infos just ask.

I have a number of applications that I like to have start when I log in. Is there a way to have them automatically open in a specified workspace? For example, I normally keep my e-mail in workspace 2 ('E-mail').
View 14 Replies View RelatedAs mentioned in the title something is terribly wrong with my system. After some updates in the last 2 days Plasma keeps on crashing like a jackhammer. Kwin reports bugs and siece to work. That said I have no borders of any window I have opened and no Kickstart menu. (I am using KDE 4.4.1.) On top of it all when I rebooted the system it just hangs when it is supposed to start X and KDM. When I switch to verbose boot I see that Avahi Daemon has a "Failed" sign. I have tried with older kernels, but that did not solve anything. To be honest I am clueless on how to fix Avahi. The easiest way is to reinstall Fedora, but I would have stuck with Windows for that and where is the learning opportunity in that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just decided to go with Compiz rather than Kwin for my window manager. I have everything working beautifully aside from one little problem... The plasma dock won't pick up clicks any more. The mouse focuses on whatever is underneath the dock, rather than the dock itself. I'm sure there is a setting I can alter to override this behavior, I just can't figure it out to save my life.
Upon further investigation I found that it only behaves this way if I set the dock to auto-hide.
