I am trying to install suse 11 on an ibm x3400 m2 machine. After installing the various packages, i get the following error :
Error while installing initrd
Error while installing grub
There are 2 500GB hard disks on which i have configured RAID-1.let me know what the issue could be as I am new to linux.
Before installing OpenSUSE I shrunk my Win 7 partition down in half, then created 3 partitions out of the new free space for /root, /home and /swap. I installed opensuse and when it got to the bootloader section I kept getting Grub error 17 - cannot mount selected partition, and so on. I made sure it was writing to the MBR and also into /boot if that makes a difference, but I did get a prompt that said YaST couldn't make changes to /dev/sda (I'm paraphrasing and can't remember the exact error message). At the moment I have suse installed and my windows partition intact, but no bootloader (not even windows one) so all I can do is boot to Live CD.
Below is the output of fdisk -l. There's quite a few more partitions than it's showing, sda3, sda4 and sda5 are my /home, /root, /swap and the other ones are windows partitions, like the system recovery along with the win7 install. During the suse install I formatted the home and root partitions with ext4 filesystem.

I am new to this forum as i have installed suse 11.2 now. I am using ubuntu from a long time so decided to try other distro along with karmic. I had lost ubuntu grub after suse installation. Suse bootloader doesnt detect ubuntu partiton. I had tried to edit grub list but failed.

I've tried to install opensuse in a dual boot with xp. I've got an extended partition with root home and swap and primary partitions for xp and boot. The installation freezes at 92% while installing the bootloader, I've tried installing from cd and from usb, with or without boot partition and nothing changed.

My first question is :Is this right to make 4 paritions in windows (opensuse can't format or resize my partitions it just can edit it ) so it's my only way to make partitions( If this is wrong how can i make partitions then)
My second question is how to change the bootloader configurtation because everytime when ii try to install opensuse it stops at about 96% and it says to reconfigure the bootloader options.
If i skip this i get the folowing message

I've ordered and received the beautiful 4 disk set for release 11.2 that came on DVD. Like so many Linux users I would like to load it on an older Windows XP box without DVD drive. Haven't seen this release offered on CD's. I've been able to copy it via network to a file on the box, but have no idea which files belong on which CD - I assume it will take 7 or 8 disks like many of the older releases. Don't want to buy a DVD drive for the old box .

well, gonna straight-explain what I`ve here: had a Win7 64bit installed machine and created a D drive as I was intended to install Suse there (so it`s `Extended`) after succesfully installed SLED and finally restarted the laptop to see use Win7 again there was no Loader for me to choose which Operation System (I have another machine with XP,Ubuntu and Pardus - never had sucha problem)then I had to chose SLED of course but this time it didn`t bring me to the login page but to the Command Line of SLED, and the thing is that I can`t use command line on linux. tried several times and with failsafe login but stıll having command line and there is no Win7 to run on Loader.

I am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!

Been happy with 10.3 and 11.3 almost ready to go over to Ubuntu due to partitioning bug in 11.4. Getting error 1007 on first partition written to disc. Abort, go to live CD keeps getting size of swap file wrong should be 2.00 GB, usually it is 2.01 GB. Deleted parts, tried to create using live CD 11.4. Same result. I create partitions first in 11.3 live CD then install 11.4 without formating. Will this work? Also issue with waening about Grub and disc size over 125 GB. New laptop Acer Aspire, will BIOS be ok. Dont want to lose win7 as OEM.

My system is a System 76 PanP4 Pangolin that originally ran Ubuntu.Uname -a returns: Linux linux-zcga 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. My video is a Geforce 9300M with an nVidia driver.A Google search turns up the fact that similar error messages have been reported with Fedora, Ubuntu, Meego and Gentoo. These frequently have had something to do with sound and in at least one case the advised correction was to reinstall udev. I can see where bugs were filed but with no clear response. Some of these go back several years, the most recent is within the last few months. I did not see a posting that involved Suse.
1.Can someone tell me what these error messages mean?
2.Does this pose a problem?Everything seems to work normally on my system once I am through the boot process.
3.If this is a problem how does one fix it?
I'm trying to do a new net install on my laptop. I can boot into the installation kernel and I enter the http server: (download.opensuse.org) and the folder: /distribution/11.2/repo/oss. The installation proceeds to "System Analysis" and continues 90% of the way to "Build Repository" At this point, I am greeted with a red dialogue box which says: An error occurred during the installation.

I dual boot Ubuntu, and Windows 7 on my WD Scorpio Black 1TB hard drive (if the HD matters). I burned a CD to install Ubuntu 10.10 (32bit Desktop). The installation was going smoothly until I got an error that it cannot install the Bootloader to /dev/sda, I tried all the partitions under that (/dev/sda1, 2, 3). And NONE of them worked. When it rebooted it went to "grub recovery" where I could no enter anything.
I had to reinstall Ubuntu 10.04 to get my computer back and it's now dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 again. This is a major issue and it's completely preventing me from installing Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine.
I have been using Ubuntu almost since it began, and I've never had an issue like this before. I do a clean install of every major new release. I want Ubuntu 10.10
I've been running Debian Lenny kernel 2.6.26 w/ desktop kde3.5 on my laptop for a while, and im going to take a trip in which i will be unable to take wmy laptop with me. However, where i am going contains computers and i figured if i could install debian onto my external harddrive, i could just boot onto the other computers. and then the blinkng cursor. On one site i found something saying "you may need to activat the drive" and some command-line instructions on how to do it. However the commands have faded from memory and i am now unable to find that site again. Could anyone offer insight on how to fix this "grub error 21" or how to activate it. I run primarily debian but i have a windows partition on one of my relative's computers.

This is my first linux install ever, so I have no idea what is going on. I hope I have enough information to get this figured out as soon as possible. I was bored with windows 7 and wanted to learn another operating system. I made a boot cd with openSuSE gnome. On the internal hard drive is my windows 7 boot system that i do not want to touch, and on the external 1tb hard drive, i'd like to partition 50 GB for openSuSE. If this is not possible i have another method, but i'd rather not use it (which is use my secondary 80 GiB hdd). Playing on a test rig here and I want to install openSUSE in an already multi-boot Ubuntu family environment. All the 'Buntus play together nicely with grub 1.89, learning the ins-and-outs of which appears to be a lifetime endeavor.SUSE appears to be still on legacy grub, and I don't want that to take over from (almost) grub 2.0. It's fairly trivial to add things to the newer grub. Question is can I install SUSE and tell it NOT to install a bootloader at all?

I have several distro's and just let them install their bootloaders, but always on hd0 mbr. I installed Debian 5.0.1 this way and it wouldn't boot, so I got SGD to "fix" it, which it said was successful, but all I get is a partition doesn't exist when I try to boot. I put Debian on /dev/sdb3, I loaded Linux Rescueand mounted sdb3 and verified that its menu.lst had the right boot numbers (hd1,2). fdisk even showns /dev/sdb3 as boot as shown by the asterisk under the boot column. Should I do a complete reinstall of grub, maybe using one of the other distro's as the holder of grub? At one time they did all the grub launching as each addition was made
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I installed openSUSE 11.1, and got everything from yast2 and then finally got nvidia.ymp or whatever. Bascially, the one click install. When i did that, I couldn't boot into the SUSE GUI. I could boot into the command line but I couldn't start X server.When I did try the Ec2-openSUSE-2.62.27.9 option, I get grub error 13. It says that the ex2fs file system is not supported, only I did not format it with ext2. I am completely stumped and I'm a newbie.

When I try to boot from the OpenSUSE 11.3 x86_64 DVD, I get a curses based screen which says, "Make sure that CD number 1 is in your drive." (with OK and Back buttons). On pressing Back and trying to install again, I get an angry red dialog, which declares, "No repository found."
I tried connecting an external USB DVD drive and then booting from it, then this problem did not come and the install went to start the GUI. But then it could not find the (rather any) hard disk!
We have a set of these identical machines and the problem is fully repeatable on all of them (I tried downloading and burning the DVD image again, that didn't help). The same machines have OpenSUSE 11.1 and 11.2 installed on them and there was no such problem installing those.
I got this error when installing 11.3 64 with the home partition encrypted.
"Failure occurred during the following action: Setting up encrypted dm device on /dev/sda7 System error code was: -3033"
Can I encrypt /home after the install? Should I?
What just happened was that I was experiencing some serious blue screen errors in Windows all of a sudden, so I loaded up my recovery partition for windows, and ran the "Restore complete system function". At some point, it had to restart, and I got the BIOS error "Unable to detect operating system". Eventually I got openSUSE to work again by reinstalling it using my DVD. However, now, whenever I load my windows partition, I get a windows error that says it cannot configure Windows on my hardware! The furthest it gets is a blue Windows screen that says "Please wait while Windows continues to configure your hardware."
My windows version is Vista, and I use openSUSE 11.3 as my primary partition. My question is this: How can I re-install Windows onto my partition? I have a recovery partition setup still, but I'm afraid that the Restore Complete System function will mess with my linux partitions again!
All I want Windows for is to play WoW! Running WoW through Wine is fail on my laptop for some reason, its far too slow and problematic. Please help me... some Linux forums just trashed me for using Windows at all, but its my only option available for my particular spec of computer to play this game, so that type of advice doesn't help me much. Feasible alternatives to a Windows partition would be nice, but Wine clearly doesn't work for me like I desire.
