I have a poweredge t110 and am trying to install suse 11 on my server. I am getting a error 17 grub. It will not allow me to get any farther, I have three 250gb HD installed.
View 1 RepliesBefore installing OpenSUSE I shrunk my Win 7 partition down in half, then created 3 partitions out of the new free space for /root, /home and /swap. I installed opensuse and when it got to the bootloader section I kept getting Grub error 17 - cannot mount selected partition, and so on. I made sure it was writing to the MBR and also into /boot if that makes a difference, but I did get a prompt that said YaST couldn't make changes to /dev/sda (I'm paraphrasing and can't remember the exact error message). At the moment I have suse installed and my windows partition intact, but no bootloader (not even windows one) so all I can do is boot to Live CD.
Below is the output of fdisk -l. There's quite a few more partitions than it's showing, sda3, sda4 and sda5 are my /home, /root, /swap and the other ones are windows partitions, like the system recovery along with the win7 install. During the suse install I formatted the home and root partitions with ext4 filesystem.

I tried to install openSUSE 11.3 from the Gnome live CD. I had four partitions set already for /boot, /, /home (ext4 all) and swap from a previous failed Linux Mint installation. I installed into them, and formatted them. The /boot partition is primary and pretty well into the disk. The other partitions are logical and at the end of an extended partition which has several partitions before them. There's also an inactive Windows primary partition at the start, and a second disk with a Windows installation and a lot of logical partitions.
After install, it looks like booting into grub works fine, and I get "Error 22: No Such Partition". I then get to the GRUB menu. If I choose openSUSE from there I get:

root (hd1,2)
Error 22: No Such Partition
Booting from the live CD it looks like /boot, / and /home contain data, so they must be formatted fine.
I have a system running om vmware esxi with suse 9.3 i did an inplace upgrade to 10.2. i got the follwoing error during upgrade error occurred while installing grub (version 0.97) error 21 disk cannot be found. I ignore this error and the upgrade went fine. after a reboot the server works pretty fine. Except one thing GRUB.. i cannot install it on this system. i want to install grub on this system.

I guess the chainloader boots 1st ufs slice and ignores the other. I've installed GrUB in FreeBSD and when I try to boot with different menu 'configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst' it returns error 17. This is probably due to inability reading ufs.
adding Fedora Core 11 to opensuse's GRUB menu so that I can boot FC11 from it. Here's what fdisk -l shows:

I dual booted opensuse along with vista. I installed opensuse in extended partition, with grub and gave the option as "boot from extended partition". Now everything is fine. I am able to boot into suse as well as vista. Now how can I restore my vista bootloader? I want to uninstall openSuse. When I try restore mbr from hard disk. There is absolutely no change!

I've setup a dualboot-system. SUSE 11.2 starts automatically and works well all the time.
But when I want to use XP (yeah, sometimes I do that...), in about 40% of all cases it won't be loaded when chosen in GRUB. Just a black screen without anything else.Then I need to restart and in the 2nd trial it works!

I am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!

Been happy with 10.3 and 11.3 almost ready to go over to Ubuntu due to partitioning bug in 11.4. Getting error 1007 on first partition written to disc. Abort, go to live CD keeps getting size of swap file wrong should be 2.00 GB, usually it is 2.01 GB. Deleted parts, tried to create using live CD 11.4. Same result. I create partitions first in 11.3 live CD then install 11.4 without formating. Will this work? Also issue with waening about Grub and disc size over 125 GB. New laptop Acer Aspire, will BIOS be ok. Dont want to lose win7 as OEM.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am seeing a udev error message on booting that I have not seen before with LInux and which I cannot interpret. My Suse 11.4-KDE installation is fairly new. My system is a System 76 PanP4 Pangolin that originally ran Ubuntu.Uname -a returns: Linux linux-zcga 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. My video is a Geforce 9300M with an nVidia driver.A Google search turns up the fact that similar error messages have been reported with Fedora, Ubuntu, Meego and Gentoo. These frequently have had something to do with sound and in at least one case the advised correction was to reinstall udev. I can see where bugs were filed but with no clear response. Some of these go back several years, the most recent is within the last few months. I did not see a posting that involved Suse.
1.Can someone tell me what these error messages mean?
2.Does this pose a problem?Everything seems to work normally on my system once I am through the boot process.
3.If this is a problem how does one fix it?
I'm trying to do a new net install on my laptop. I can boot into the installation kernel and I enter the http server: (download.opensuse.org) and the folder: /distribution/11.2/repo/oss. The installation proceeds to "System Analysis" and continues 90% of the way to "Build Repository" At this point, I am greeted with a red dialogue box which says: An error occurred during the installation.

Earlier today I installed SUSE 11.2 with KDE and everything worked fine at first. Then I started monkeying around. First I tried getting my XFI extremegamer to work right and that didn't go well. So I started from the install disk and repaired the install. That messed up GRUB so I couldn't choose to boot Windows 7. Tried fixing that with super GRUB disk (USB) and now GRUB gets error 22. I found that the most common cause is deleting the linux partition in windows.
I also need to install stuff, like drivers and other programs. The problem with my sound card is that I can't even hear anything out of it outside of the test sound. The included media player doesn't get anything, neither does online site like ...... On a side note, I'm thinking about just reinstalling linux and starting fresh. Considering that I'm such a linux n00b, would it be better to use KDE or GNOME?
for any reason after installation system hangs up and nothing happens, i�m newbie about linux, maybe the problem is the RAID 1 configuration of the disks. The machine is a R710 Server:

I tried several times to install sue 11.3 on a amd 64 system by configuration a soft raid1 by this order:
md0 /boot
md1 /
md2 swap
or my problem, after configuration and install over the dvd and yast installation menu, after the first reboot I have a grub error -> nothing found.If i try to setup suse 11.2 over the same method, it works.after a system upgrade to 11.3 all is working fine. The only problem is by installing directly the 11.3 I also re-download the dvd and try over the netcd and it's all the time the same error.I searched in the forum but nothing found (perhaps i do a wrong search)
I recently decided to try out openSUSE 11.4 with gnome and install it on my external USB HDD. To do so i followed this guide here SDB:Installation on external hard drive - openSUSE
Unfortunately after finishing the install when trying to boot into the system i got GRUB error 17. The only thing i did differently from the guide was placing the /boot partition after a ~800 GB NTFS partition with my data.
I tried to solve the problem by reinstalling the system with different settings than before. After completing all of the steps in the guide mentioned i disabled booting from MBR and enabled booting from /boot partition. Also set the installer to write generic boot code to MBR.
Though after the installation i realized that grub is not loading at all this time and went on to fix it by completing the steps here SDB:All about GRUB - openSUSE . After doing so i'm back to GRUB error 17.
I installed a suse 11.3 on my acer laptop and it worked just fine for two days.I was able to use internet as well though wi-fi driver i still had to figure out.This morning when i started it, it gave me an error like this:- Failed to load grub Error 18 now from what i understand is the solution is to downsize the harddisk partition used by the linux root to somewhat 10gb.Mine is about 40gb.
So i thought why not re-install the os again.But even after changing the bios setting to boot from cd-rom and putting in the suse dvd still its not booting from dvd and continously giving this error Error 18:Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS and then it comes to a command prompt like this grub>
I have a Dell Dimension 4400, 8 yrs old. It is set up to boot to either Open Suse 11 or Windows. I turned on the machine this morning, it booted very slowly. My screen says, "GRUB loading stage 1.5" then it says "Error 21." I can not go beyond this screen. My machine is stuck here.

My windows partition is sdb1, and my (hopeful) openSUSE partition is sdc2. When I attempt to redefine the grub config after receiving the error message, there are no mounted drives in my "/dev/" folder to point to, nor can I find the kernel image or RAM disk in my "/boot/" folder.

I noticed it's point to hd0,2 which is my first drive three partition. I load everything including grub to sdb3 (hd1,2). When I pointed everything back to hd1,2 now I get error code 22 on reboot. How do you restore grub to sdb3 or hd1,2. I also need to repair my Windows 7 Pro MBR.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed opensuse 11.2 64bit on my external hard drive with the idea that this way the two OS would be completely seperate and I could just use suse when I felt like it. Everything boots fine for both OS when the hard driv is plugged in but when it is unplugged I can't get past a boot screen which says: Grub loading stage 1.5 Error 21 I have seen on another forum a fix using the windows install disk but I no longer have this. Is there some other fix I can use to make my laptop portable again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows 7 OS installed as my main OS, it installed on its own HDD with 3 other data storage drives.
On my 5th drive I installed a copy of OpenSUSE 11.02 to see if I like it. I have decided I don't wish to keep it so I reformatted the drive while in Win7. Of course on restart I got the Grub 1.5 Error 22. All my HDD's are seperate and there are no partitions.
I have had to reinstall OpenSUSE just to get my PC to boot.
All I want to is remove OpenSUSE from my computer without losing my Win 7 install.
My Win 7 install disc fails to recognise my Win 7 so I can not get the recovery command prompt/repair options.
Can someone explain in say 5 simple steps to get back my original MBR so I can boot straight to Windows as I can't seem to find a guide that actually explains what to do. Either by doing it in OpenSUSE 11.02 or Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
