Ubuntu Installation :: An Error (1) Occured While Executing Syslinux USB Won't Be Bootable?
Jan 3, 2011
Ok so I've searched for a solution to this problem everywhere and couldn't seem to find any, so I decided to post here.Recently I came across a new modified version of Ubuntu which was made for pentesters, called "blackbuntu".Now I know everything is the same as linux, except a little tweaked. So, I am trying to setup my bootable USB drive, and get this error (I chose Try an unlisted OS -- Then picked New Syslinux). And I keep getting this error:^

When using the Universal USB Installer and following the instructions according to the Ubuntu web site, I get the following error: an error () "occurred while executing syslinux. Your USB drive won't be bootable" There is no number between the brackets and I has no problem with a previous version of Ubuntu netbook remix.

I'm trying to make a bootable USB disk by using syslinux. The USB disk is recognized as /dev/sdc.
#mkdosfs -I /dev/sdc
#syslinux /dev/sdc
After executing the above two commands, it generates errors as follow:
end_request: I/O error, dev sdc, sector 32
printk: 21 messages suppressed.
Buffer I/O error on device sdc, logical block 4
Buffer I/O error on device sdc, logical block 5
... ...
Buffer I/O error on device sdc, logical block 12

if not please redirect to correct area. I will start by saying I know very little about Linux beyond simple usage. My question is about "Syslinux Bootloader chainloaded to GRUB4DOS"
Pendrivelinux has a really awesome utility, one that I have been searching to find for many years. It allows you to put multiple ISOs onto a single USB and selectively boot the images. Mast are live Linux OSs, or repair disks, there is even an option for a Windows install disk. The "menu" is configured for about 30 ISOs right now, and I believe it uses a Grub loader. The link below will take you to the wbsite that hosts the utility download link, lists all the currently supported ISOs, and has the very simple instructions.
url
Once you download the app. there is a file called "menu" that you can edit the list of installed images on the USB drive. I have put:
4-5 Live Linux ISOs
Windows 7 Install files
4-5 rescue CDs
on my USB stick. I deleted the menu items I do not use (a lot of them), and reorganized the menu to my liking.
I know NOTHING about how to figure out the Linux code language. I want to add the following ISO images to the USB, but I am unable to figure out how to write their use into the menu.
Hirens boot CD
Windows XP repair disk
Acronis True Image 2010 recovery disk
I have tried altering already made menus with no success, and I dont even know where to begin. If some of you might be willing to DL the utility, look at the menu structure, I would be very appreciative. I know that you will probably need the ISO images, but they are fairly common. While I am very new here, I am very familiar with forums in general, and would be happy to make a donation for the help, like I said, I have dreamed of such a multiboot solution for many years, and would love to see these added to the options, making it a truly ultimate bootable USB.

my Dad's computer was running quite slow here lately (Running Hardy Heron). I decided to go ahead and run all the software updates, and had it go ahead and update the OS as well. Well, the install went fine, but upon booting, it crashes to busy-box with the dreaded "ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/########## not found error". I found that if I waited for a while, then cd'd to the by-uuid folder, this file eventually showed up. So I figured maybe if I 'exit' from there, it would boot up and find the file. Au Contrair, things get stranger! I end up with a purple screen telling "An Error Occured While Mounting /". Here's what it looks like: This is quite frustrating, I'd like to get it fixed and hopefully save the data he has on there! I remember having the by-uuid error once before after running an update I think, but can't remember how I fixed it! Feels like I just used the 'exit' trick a couple of boots and it was fine??

This is my first linux install ever, so I have no idea what is going on. I hope I have enough information to get this figured out as soon as possible. I was bored with windows 7 and wanted to learn another operating system. I made a boot cd with openSuSE gnome. On the internal hard drive is my windows 7 boot system that i do not want to touch, and on the external 1tb hard drive, i'd like to partition 50 GB for openSuSE. If this is not possible i have another method, but i'd rather not use it (which is use my secondary 80 GiB hdd). When installing, I am getting the error, "Error occured while installing GRUB" Which shows the following:

So I decided to go on and install 10.04 LTS, because it is LTS... I created the live USB as directed on the Ubuntu download page. I download Universal USB Installer and it says USB created successfully. However, when I boot from the USB the error comes up as mentioned in title... The USB has no problems because I installed 10.10 last time from the very same USB. There's nothing wrong with the procedure because I am following the officially suggested method. Also, nothing wrong with partitions because one instance of Ubuntu is installed and was working fine until I tried to install video drivers (long story)...

I'm trying to use emacs in the auctex mode. But Flymake complains about something I could not understand. This is the error it shows whenever I open a tex file.
Code:
Flymake:Configuration error has occured while running (texify --pdf --tex-option=-c-style-errors PATH_TO_FILE_DIRECTORY/FILE_flymake.tex).
Flymake will be switched OFF.
I have texify installed on my system. I also tried suggestions in the emacs wiki on FlymakeTex, added the following lines in my .emacs file:
Code:
(defun flymake-get-tex-args (file-name)
(list "pdflatex" (list "-file-line-error" "-draftmode"
"-interaction=nonstopmode" file-name)))
How do I stop this msg and use flymake.

I am trying to install ubuntu netbook remix on acer aspire one netbook. I used the usb-creator.exe tool to make bootable usb drive. When I boot from the usb drive it comes up to the boot options screen. But when I try to either install or run ubuntu from disk it goes to a black screen and stops or goes to a page long error message saying "cannot mount drive" and a list of command options. I also am not sure if setup gives you the option to reformat the hard drive. Or if this has to be done prior to booting from ubuntu usb-disk.

I don't have a cd player in my laptop so live cd is not an option. All I have here is a usb stick that has syslinux, I thought it could boot ubuntu located on my harddrive from syslinux on the usb stick but don't know how. My system doesn't boot anymore, I can boot a usb stick containing TRK but that doesn't do much. I want to boot the ubuntu kernel and initrd that are on the harddrive so I can recover (kernel .... innitrd single). Both the kernel and initrd are on /dev/sda8/boot but can't tell syslinux to boot them.
Copied the kernel and initrd from sda8 to the usb then edited the syslinux.conf to add the following item: label 4 menu label ^4 : boot ubuntu recover kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd ro root=/dev/sda8 single Now working from my ubuntu and trying to install grub again.

I am so close to the answer i think. My goal is to fully automate an entire Ubuntu installation off a usb flashdrive from start to finish. So, i did as this guide said and i made a kickstart ks.cfg file that is used to automate an installation, as i'm sure many of u know. The next step has infinitely confused me. To make the ks.cfg file boot automatically and startup an installation to my specifications.from this linkttp://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubunt...en/apcs01.htmlI have found that editing the syslinux.cfg file in the syslinux directory on the usb can be used to load preseed file, which to my understanding serves the same purpose as a kickstart file.

Using a multitude of different programs, including the one the official site recommended, it always hangs at this screen with a blinking cursor:
Code:
SYSLINUX 4.02 2010-07-21 EDD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al
how do I get past this? What's going wrong here? I checked the md5sum of the iso and it matches up with the official one.
Edit: I know the flash drive isn't at fault, because I've used it as a live USB for 10.04 and several other distros.

When trying to boot a USB disk image of either 10.10 or 10.04 I get an error saying that no syslinux configuration file could be found and "syslinux error: No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found.".
The USB disk was created using the Startup Disk Creator on Maverick.
I'm guessing the second error is just caused by the first, since the syslinux.conf definitely isn't there. Thing is, I've used the 10.04 image before and it's worked fine, so I'm starting to think it's the Startup Disk Creator that's at fault.

I have used Universal USB Installer to extract the xubuntu 10.10 iso and install onto a flash drive. I would like to try a live version of xubuntu that boots from a flash drive. When attempting to boot from the flash drive, the screen effectively freezes after displaying the syslinux / ebios copyright message, with a flashing cursor.
Does anyone know a possible cause or solution? Information that may be useful: I am using a 4GB flash drive, formatted as FAT32. I formatted once using the Universal USB Installer, but some files were left on the drive, so I have reformatted it using the option provided by the Windows interface, (and reinstalled xubuntu.)
When I opt to install onto USB with a 2GB persistence file using Universal USB Installer, the installation processes hangs with a dialogue saying there are 0 seconds left to copy, until the dialogue is forcefully shut (and installation appears to be successful). When I select no persistence file, the process does not hang. (I am faced with the same aforementioned problem at boot time, regardless.)
I have not checked the md5sum (though I have no reason to suspect it will fail.) I have downloaded a simple programme which checks a single md5sum against a single file, although I am unsure which file I should check against in the case of xubuntu, and if the md5sum.txt file represents a single md5sum.
I am using Windows Vista on an old Toshiba Satellite. I am new to using linux, and am very unfamiliar with the the setup and installation procedure.

I am currently running Fedora 10 XFCE on an Acer Aspire 1 (1.6ghz atom, 1.5gb ram, 8gb ssd). I am trying to install Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE via USB stick (Kingston 4gb) and am having no luck. I downloaded the .iso via bittorrent. If I use liveusb-creator: .iso passes checksum, installs boot image, installs syslinux, claims it's complete. When I try to boot, or simulate booting with qemu, I get the message "Could not find kernel image: linux" If I use
Code:
# livecd-iso-to-disk /home/jorge/downloads/Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE/Fedora-11-i686-Live-XFCE.iso /dev/sdb1
it says that the .iso passes checksum, installs live image, updates boot config file, and setup USB stick as a live image. Once again though, when I try to boot, or simulate booting with qemu, I get the same message "Could not find kernel image: linux"

Trying to install Frostwire as well as RPMFusion on Fedora 12 KDE.I simply just got an error from KPackageKit "An error occured." No additional details.I then tried to do the same with RPMFusion, where I also got the same error.I figured I'd ask here before I go any further. I know with Kubuntu I had some issues with particular packages with KPackageKit so I'd use GDebi for those. Should I do that here, or what's the proper protocol to get things like RPMFusion and Frostwire fired up?
