I use Brasero/K3b but both of them showed that the ISO is too large (4.7GB) - while the DVD capacity of the disk I'm using is 4.3 or so GB (Princo). Then I figured I'd try to extract the files and burn them like that (extracted iso being 4.2 GB). So then I encountered another issue, usually one would find boot.catalog, which wasn't the case here. Any ideas on how I should burn my DVD ISO ?

When I installed opensuse 11.2 64-bit (KDE) the installer set the root partition to 20GB by default. That seemed unnecessarily large, so I reduced it to 16GB. I then completed the install (basically a default KDE install minus games & educational stuff) and still had more than 8GB free. I'm aware that these days hard drive storage space is quite cheap, but it's not so cheap for me as I have an SSD. Would it not be reasonable to reduce the default root partition size to 12GB, or perhaps vary it according to the software package load selected?

I use KRandRTray to resize back to 1024 X 768. How can I set 1024 X 768 as the default but still have the option to go to 1920 X 1200?

This is not because Clementine is QT4, I've got the same problem with Chrome, Opera etc. I've been messing with system-settings (KDE settings tool) a day before the fonts become that widespaced in order to make my KDE apps look more native on my GNOME, but I haven't touched the fonts settings there.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSuSE 11.2 = 2.6.31, ntpd 4.2.4p7. My offset and jitter are large compared to what I see on the internet. I have also been trying to use a GPS+PPS but that doesn't seem to matter one way or the other. They usually start out with offset and jitter in the single digits and drift / move to something like -400 and 80 over a couple of hours. I have tried various remedies under ntp.org like HZ=100, setting clocksource to tsc, hpet, or acpi_pm. I do not know what to do with acpi so i didn't test that. One of my systems has drift of < +-20 which is good. I have tried it on another identical system and also an 11.1 system. One of the systems is not behind my firewall. They do not run a firewall themselves or VM or pretty much anything as they are not being used.
I have used ntp.conf with/without 'prefer'. Here is a recent ntpq -p:

Problem is with files greater than 4G onto dual layer or BD disks.mkisofs crashes. I believe the problem to be when this requires udf filesystem and disk does not get written to. As yesterday version is suse11.3 patched to date. k3b writes standard dvd disks ok. I am seeing a lot of searches saying this is because of cdrkit rather than cdrtools, can I replace this easily? Is this the case? Tried setting the k3b options when burning to udf same error. Other searches show k3b has fixed probs with these issues, so appears to point to underlying mkisofs stuff full error log in yesterdays post if it helps. I will also try on ubuntu to see if it works there

I've got a strange sendmail problem I've never come across before...Messages less that 2500 lines (approx 169kb) are sent correctly - anything else goes straight into the queue and is never delivered. The server sits in a intranet, is not connected to the outside world, and forwards its mail to a smart host.All configuration has been done through yast, so there are no unusual settings. View 4 Replies View RelatedI need to use the drive which currently hosts an Ubuntu 9.10 server install. The Os install was the default Ubuntu partitioning. It created sda1, sda2 and sda5, Linux, Extended and Linux/Swap partitions, respectively. The start and end blocks for sda2 & 5 are the same. I am trying to figure out which method of migration would be the best. I have used ddrescue to clone hard drives and am not sure how this would work when migrating to a smaller HD (Moving from a 74GB to a 36GB). Would it be a good idea to shrink the partition with Gparted or something? The OS is only about 3-4GB.
The other way I could migrate is to use the tar backup I made. It should have everything needed as I used the notes from the Ubuntu Backup How To page. I just don't know how this works when installing to a new hard drive. Would I need to create or edit the MBR of the new hard drive? Can a tar backup capture any of the MBR info?I guess it shouldn't make much of a difference as to which method I use so I am open to suggestions as to which to try and any suggestions as to things to make sure to do.
I've started having problems with large file downloads. A download will start and after a while freeze. The downloads window reports the correct connection speed and gives an estimated time to complete, but it stays frozen. Small downloads, torrents and surfing are not affected. I can do everything else normally even when the download is frozen. I've checked with my ISP and everything with my equipment checks out.

On several occasions, it has frozen the client machine. Both client and server are set to default to nfs version 3. Slowdown and hang also occur when connecting to FreeBSD NFS mounts.
Presumably (I hope), there is some sort of configuration for the client that needs to be set. what should be changed in the configuration? This worked out of the box in OpenSUSE 11.0.
I want to install Linux Mint 11 (just came out) to a USB drive. My USB drive is 34 gb. So I want to put a 1-2 gb partition on it and install mint just to that. Is that possible? I am a noob so I want to use [URL] but the screenshots don't show an option for a partition or state any extra steps that might be involved in doing this (there's a tutorial for doing this for one of the Ubuntus using fdisk, but I don't have any linux installs right now).

I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.
I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.
Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.
It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.
Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.

View 2 Replies View RelatedDown loaded the Ubuntu 10.4 ISO for this site when download was complete, got a screen telling me to insert a writable cd which I did. It went through a Format process and then asked me to drag the files to that directory. When I tried to do that I got a message saying that I was 138mb short of space. the Iso was 704mb and the cd had formatted to something over 500mb. the disk is a CD-RW rewritable cd.

I was asked to install ntpd to prevent this from happening in the future and I did install it which seemed to work for a few days but now I observe the lag again. Just to note, I notice it only when I hibernate my system.

I'm limited to using my hard drive as there's no CD/DVD or floppy drives installed on the machine and BIOS does not support booting from USB.

From the terminal enter these commands

Creating the folder "distro" on root was easy and went smoothly. I can't seem to make the second 'whoami' command work, though. I copied-and-pasted "sudo chmod `whoami`:`whoami`" into the terminal. It asks me for the root password, I enter that and then get

i know if u search a solution in forums u get so much confused information. i hope this little manual will help all with the nvidia driver problem! u dont need to edit or create a xorg.conf or something to run the driver correct and u need no blacklistedit too! if u did the standard opensuse 11.3 install its only about 2 kernel packages and the disabling of the x11noveau driver.
1. after standard installing opensuse 11.3 update and install the opensuse softwareupdates
2. install with the yast software re/installer:

u dont need to change the menu.lst after all, only u get many problems. run the midnight commander and delete the nomodeset word and the noveau driver would be normally still active after reboot.
Well I was looking into backing up my system and with some excellent help from remeeraz in another post just realized how big the filesytem for fedora was. On my system at least its showing 10GB of used space. Now im not sure if that includes the swap file aswell but as explained in another post I have the 210MB filesystem location and the the 320GB LVM2. From my limited understanding it seems the lvm2 location ecompasses the swap and the filesystem but does not explicitly show the swap location and in any event shows the full size of the drive.
once i have backed this core system up so I dont have to worry about ballzing it again how can i strip the installation to a more managable size like to fit on a DVD, im not talking about saving pictures or movies just the base install as thats all i have right now anyway.
Just have upgraded from Fedora 11 to Fedora 13 and now fonts in KDE are too large, so my 1280x1024 desktop resolution seams like much lower. Such apps like Thunderbird, Firefox, Opera and others have their own font settings, but they affect only on text inside browser or e-mail. All menus, toolbars and other elements are big. Other apps which don't have own font settings have all fonts big. I tried to change font sizes in system fonts parameters, set all them to 10, but no any effect. It's especially inconvenient in Thunderbird, because it has big fonts not only in menus, but also in names of all folders and even in messages subjects. Only message text itself is customizable in its settings.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use a large LCD TV as a monitor for movies, etc. I have the user set up and working. But, I'm struggling with GDM. I rather miss the days where a few cryptic settings in XORG.conf file made everything work correctly.
I added some lines to /etc/gdm/Init/Default and /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default. In both cases I added:
xrandr -newmode "1360x768_60.00"
xrandr -addmode VGA1 "1360x768_60.00"
xrander -output VGA1 "1360x768_60.00"
The next line is original and is
/sbin/initctl -q emit login . . . . . .
I'm not sure if I'm not adding the xrandr info to the right files/locations or if my xrandr stuff is wrong. For the user, I just logged in via VNC and changed the resolution. That part was easy.
