Fedora :: Large Filesystem Can It Be Stripped Down

Apr 8, 2010

Well I was looking into backing up my system and with some excellent help from remeeraz in another post just realized how big the filesytem for fedora was. On my system at least its showing 10GB of used space. Now im not sure if that includes the swap file aswell but as explained in another post I have the 210MB filesystem location and the the 320GB LVM2. From my limited understanding it seems the lvm2 location ecompasses the swap and the filesystem but does not explicitly show the swap location and in any event shows the full size of the drive.

once i have backed this core system up so I dont have to worry about ballzing it again how can i strip the installation to a more managable size like to fit on a DVD, im not talking about saving pictures or movies just the base install as thats all i have right now anyway.

Ubuntu :: Root Filesystem Fills Up When Copying A Large File?

Mar 17, 2010

I was just copying a large (50GB) file from one mounted partition to another mounted partition (a USB drive), but before the operation completed, my root filesystem, on a separate partition, filled up.Because it filled up I also couldn't get past the login when I rebooted. I think this is because there is no room to load temporary files. I'm expanding the root partition to temporarily fix this. how can I avoid my root file system filling up when copying a massive file between mounted partitions? the file is being cached in root during the transfer.

Server :: Extremely Large Metadata Size For Directory On An Ext4 Filesystem?

Jun 24, 2011

I am running CentOS 5.5 with a 14T ext4 volume. We are sharing out a few sub-directories via NFS. Our customer was doing some penetration testing with our web app that writes to one of those NFS shares. We are not sure if they did something to cause the metadata to grow so large or if it is corrupt. Here is the listing:drwxrwxr-x 1 owner owner 470M Jun 24 18:15 temp.badI guess the metadata could actually be that large, however we have been unable to perform any operations on that directory to determine if the directory is just loaded with files or corrupted. We have not run an fsck on the volume because we would need to schedule downtime for out customers to do so. Has anyone come across this before

Red Hat / Fedora :: Filesystem Check After Power Outage - WARNING: "Running E2fsck On A Mounted Filesystem May Cause SEVERE Filesystem Damage"

May 18, 2011

I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..

*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message

*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)

Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.

Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

Server :: File Permissions Being Stripped On New Files Via NFS

Feb 3, 2010

I'm having an issue that I've seen before on other OS's (Solaris), but I'm coming up blank on solving for an NFS mount shared from RedHat I've googled this, and looked through all the FAQs and mail lists I can find.

The issue is this:

Whenever a new file is created from an NFS client to an NFS mounted file system, the group and world permissions are being stripped such that any new file created ends up with 0600 as the file permissions. On the server, I have tried various sharing options (all_squash, anonuid, anongid, no_acl) with no luck. I've looked at the underlying mount point ownership and permissions, checked the file system acl's (getfacl...they match the visible file system), and set the custom SELinux (not mine) config to permissive. The file system is on an LVM partition, and has an SELinux group assigned in /etc/fstab. I've unmounted it, and performed a vanilla mount (no options). No amount of trial and error is working. Any file created by any user on an nfs client machine creates files with 0600 permissions, and local users on the nfs server create files with permissions based off their umask settings. I originally thought it was due to mismatches in permissions from Windows to Linux (The server also NFS shares to Windows 2K boxes using hclnfsd (PC/NFS)), but I confirmed the same issue between RedHat systems.

One thing I'm wondering from my reading. It's mentioned in many places that ownership should be root in most cases and not some other user. This entire file structure is owned by a user that is ONLY local to the server box (long story, but the box is isolated....no DNS and only local users and settings).

I have tried "sudo systemctl unmask samba.service". I receive no errors however it does not actually unmask. I can't find anything online regarding a service stuck on masked status.

Fedora :: Large Fonts In KDE After Upgrading

Jul 26, 2010

Just have upgraded from Fedora 11 to Fedora 13 and now fonts in KDE are too large, so my 1280x1024 desktop resolution seams like much lower. Such apps like Thunderbird, Firefox, Opera and others have their own font settings, but they affect only on text inside browser or e-mail. All menus, toolbars and other elements are big. Other apps which don't have own font settings have all fonts big. I tried to change font sizes in system fonts parameters, set all them to 10, but no any effect. It's especially inconvenient in Thunderbird, because it has big fonts not only in menus, but also in names of all folders and even in messages subjects. Only message text itself is customizable in its settings.

Fedora :: Extra Large Fonts In F11 While Running KDE

Jun 13, 2009

Yesterday I upgraded my desktop Hp dx2280 which I use at office and HP Compaq Presario 300 Widescreen laptop which I use at home from fedora 10 to Fedora 11. Upgradation was just fine without any errors in both cases. My desktop machine works just fine and I, hardcore KDE lover, am enjoying working. It is just amazing. But sadly my Presario C300 laptop is a mess for KDE. Login is fine And I got the desktop. First I ran xmms and pleased to hear my favourite mp3 song on it. Sound quality -- EXCELLENT.

But for any other application, whether it is Firefox, openoffice word, kwrite, even the Konsole which I love desperately presents me a screen with extra extra large fonts showing only menus like File Edit & so on. I can not see even fourth menu and no scrollbar etc. Even the clipboard gives me the same result. i.e. extra large fonts. While everything is perfect with GNOME, which I am using now. I am not getting what is the problem. Previously I had upgraded my Presario C300 laptop from KDE 4.1.x from Fedora 11 to KDE 4.2.1 from repo of kdetesting. Is that making some conflicts?

I'm ssh X11 forwarding xconsole to a Fedora 14 desktop. The font in xconsole is very large. I'd like to reduce it, but can find no means to do so. I looked at the XConsole resources file and there's no way to set a font type, or size. Man page for xconsole also has nothing in this regard. Changing the desktops DPI doesn't have the desired effect either.

I've been doing this X11 forward for years, and this is the first time I ever get a too large font in xconsole. Is there some other configuration or resource I'm missing?

Ubuntu :: Finding Filesystem Type/repair Broken Filesystem?

Jul 9, 2010

I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.

First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.

Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.

Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Fedora Networking :: 12 Hangs On Transfer Of Large Files?

Dec 9, 2009

I have Fedora 12 (with all the latest patches, including the 2.6.31.6-162 kernel) installed on a new Supermicro SYS-5015A-H 1U Server [Intel Atom 330 (1.6GHz) CPU, Intel 945GC NB, Intel ICH7R SB, 2x Realtek RTL8111C-GR Gigabit Ethernet, Onboard GMA950 video]. This all works great until I try to transfer a large file over the network, then the computer hard locks, forcing a power-off reset.

Some info about my setup:

[root@Epsilon ~]# uname -a
Linux Epsilon 2.6.31.6-162.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Fri Dec 4 00:43:59 EST 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[root@Epsilon ~]# dmesg | grep r8169
r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded

[code]....

I'm pretty sure this is an issue with the r8169 driver (what I'm seeing is somewhat reminiscent of the bug reported here). The computer will operate fine for days as a (low volume) web server, and is reasonably stable transferring small files, but as when as I try to transfer a large file (say during a backup to a NAS or a NFS share), the computer will hard lock (no keyboard, mouse, etc.) at some point into the transfer of the file. It doesn't seem to matter how the file is transferred (sftp, rsync to NFS share, etc.).

Fedora Hardware :: Low Transfer Rate When Copying Large Files Over Wireless

Jan 11, 2010

I just bought a HP 3085dx laptop with an intel 5100 agn wireless card.
The problem: copying a big file over the wireless to a gigabit hardwired to the router computer only gives an average 3.5MB/Second transfer rate. If I do the same copy from my wireless-n macbook pro to the same computer. I get a transfer rate of about 11MB/sec. Why the big difference? I noticed the HP always connects to the 2.4 GHZ band instead of the 5GHZ bands...

On the HPL

I am not getting any errors. I don't know why the bit rate is not known. My airport extreme base station typically reports that the 'rate' for the hp is typically 250~300MBi and about the same for the MacBook Pro. The hp is about 6 inchs away from the base station. Is there anyway to get the rascal to go mo'faster? Is there anyway to get the rascal to use the 5GHZ band.

Fedora :: Increase Default Large Text Size In Universal Access Settings?

May 28, 2011

I installed Fedora 15/Gnome 3 because I liked the Universal Access Settings widget for controlling the appearance of my living room computer attached to my TV. It should (when it becomes more stable) make it easy to zoom in on the screen when I'm on the couch. There is also a Large Text setting that allows me to toggle between normal text size and perhaps 125% text size.

I'd like to set that value to about 200%, but don't see how to do it. dconf-editor didn't seem to have a way. gnome-tweak-tool has a way to make all fonts bigger or smaller but I want to easily switch between normal text size when I'm sitting close and large text from the UAS. Screwing around with gnome-tweak-tool would require me to be up-close. It looks like UAS is controlled by /usr/share/gnome-control-center/ui/uap.ui, but it is a wickedly complex xml file & I don't know what to edit. Is there a per user way to change the behavior?
