OpenSUSE :: Burn Large Files With K3b Mkisofs Crashed

Nov 2, 2010

I have a problem with burning some disks. I believe the problem to be when the file sizes are large. using suse 11.3 x 64 and updates done. k3b version 2.0.1-1pm 2.7 burned normal dvd yesterday with3.5 Gb + 1.5Gb files. Tried burning to BD-R disk with 11.5 Gb file. I have burned blu ray disks before with my machine but used nero, I would prefer to use k3b as should do this. I get error of mkisofs crashed and following error log

OpenSUSE :: Burn Large Files With K3b Udf

Nov 3, 2010

Problem is with files greater than 4G onto dual layer or BD disks.mkisofs crashes. I believe the problem to be when this requires udf filesystem and disk does not get written to. As yesterday version is suse11.3 patched to date. k3b writes standard dvd disks ok. I am seeing a lot of searches saying this is because of cdrkit rather than cdrtools, can I replace this easily? Is this the case? Tried setting the k3b options when burning to udf same error. Other searches show k3b has fixed probs with these issues, so appears to point to underlying mkisofs stuff full error log in yesterdays post if it helps. I will also try on ubuntu to see if it works there

OpenSUSE :: Dolphin Losing Files When Copying Many Files Or Large Folders?

Feb 14, 2010

I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.

I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.

Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.

It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.

Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.

The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.

Ubuntu :: Command With The -r Option To Compare A Large Number Of Files And Files In Subdirectories

Jun 16, 2011

I am using the diff command with the -r option, to compare a large number of files and files in subdirectories. My main interest is to find out which files have been changed, and not what the actual changes are, and since a lot of files has been changed, it would be a lot easier to view the file names only. Is there and option for diff that might do this, or does there exist a similar tool/command that could do the job?

Ubuntu :: Can't Recover Files From A PC That Crashed And Wont Shut Down

Apr 10, 2011

My wife's Windows Vista laptop crashed and now will not boot. It is a Compaq and when we turn it on it loads into the HP recovery program. The only option is to format the drive and reinstall windows.

We can't do this however because we need to extract the files for my wife's college classes. I was told that you can use an Ubuntu Live CD to access these files so I burned a CD with 10.10 on it. It access's the computer and it appears to access the folders from the hard drive but all the folders are empty. Also the partition appears empty as well.

I found a thread on here that mentioned that the file system needs to be closed for it to be mounted but the computer had to be forced shut down so that isnt an option. Also i read something about chkdsk /f.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Burn Files To DVD-R?

Jun 18, 2010

I have ubuntu 10.4 installed, everything works on my Toshiba A200-TJ9 laptop except for the built in webcam and mic, as well as the DVD burning function of my multi drive. The drive itself is a HD-DVD Rom with CD/DVD +/- R/RW capabilities.I did a $sudo cdrecord -scanbus and it shows:

scsibus0:
0,0,0 0)'Toshiba' "DVDW/HD TS-L802A" "TO35" Removable CD-ROM
0,1,0 1)*
0,2,0 2)*[code]...

Beyond that i know absolutely nothing, and when i put in a blank CD or DVD -R, it shows up as a blank CD/DVD-R, but its properties show as 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free and 0 bytes for capacity. And not surprisingly, Brasero says not enough disc capacity when i try to burn a 2.7 gig file onto the DVD-R.

Ubuntu :: Rsync Really Slow On Large Files?

Mar 1, 2010

I have Ubuntu on both my laptop and desktop machines, both are connected to the same network. I back up the laptop to the desktop by running the following on the laptop:

rsync -avv --stats /home/alisdt alisdt@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:/home/alisdt/laptop_backup (with the IP address of the desktop instead of the many x, obviously). Whenever rsync hits a large file (greater than a few MB), the network use rapidly drops to ~60KB/s (that's kilobytes not bits). When I copy the same file to the same place using scp, I get > 500KB/s throughout the transfer. Things I've tried:

* mounting the desktop home dir on the laptop using SSHFS -- a simple file copy is fast, rsync is still slow
* ditto with NFS
* rsync --whole-file option, in case the delta-transfer algorithm was choking on large files
* rsync --inplace option
* HPN-SSH (http://www.psc.edu/networking/projects/hpn-ssh/) to enable dynamic window and unencrypted bulk transfer, just in case it was some ssh bottleneck I think it's either an rsync application problem, or a network problem that is only affecting rsync. Any ideas, or other ideas of what I can try to debug? In case it's relevant, I'm using 9.04 on both machines. (A standing bug prevents me from upgrading the laptop, and I haven't bothered to upgrade the desktop).

Ubuntu :: Windows Crashed: Unable To Display Some Documents - Unrecoverable Files

Jul 22, 2010

the other day my Dell laptop completely crashed, rebooted, got a DST error, tried to run a dskchk off the Windows Boot CD, failed due to "unrecoverable files". Then booted off Ubuntu to salvage my stuff, which seems to work fine, and I can even see my HD - "120 Gb Drive" or whatever it says. When I open it, I see 2 folders: windows, Epson, and 2 random files.

Here's the thing. It says 108/120 gigs are taken, which is just how I left my HD with all my stuff on it that I am trying to recover. Yet my personal and important documents (pictures, videos, documents and even music) are NOWHERE to be found and searches bring up nothing. yet it says the disk space is taken...I am at a total loss.

Ubuntu Installation :: Netbook Crashed / Windows XP System Files Corrupted?

Sep 1, 2011

My HP Netbook crashed. The Windows XP system files corrupted and Windows absolutely will not run. I planned on using Ubuntu to recover it, and then install Ubuntu permanently to save it in the future. Before you ask, every other utility has failed on me. UBCD included, which did nothing but provide me with errors upon errors just trying to run it.

The netbook has no CD drive. The only internet around is a wireless signal... my netbook has a broadcom wireless card that is never recognized. I'm using someone elses working laptop to connect online and get things I need, make boot devices, research for help, etc. This laptop has barely any hard drive space. Currently it has 1 gb remaining for doing anything.I have three flash memory devices:2 gb SD card. My netbook refuses to recognize it as a boot device.2 gb flash stick (that's actually an mp3 player). My netbook refuses to recognize it as a boot device.512 mb flash stick. This DOES work as a boot device.

So far my 512 mb flash stick has run Damn Small Linux and Ubuntu Minimal on my netbook. Of course, both are useless because the netbook cannot access internet, nor does either OS recognize my wireless card. This flash stick is, obviously, too small for a regular Ubuntu installation or any other Linux distribution that can help (as far as I know).

So, in order for this to work, I have to be able to do one of the following:

Install Ubuntu from a different OS, like Damn Small Linux or something small enough to boot on my 512 mb stick. Ubuntu can be put on one of the other, larger devices, maybe to be accessed for installation. No idea how to do this, let alone safely.

Install Ubuntu Minimal OFFLINE. This question was asked multiple times on these forums and none were answered. Is there a way to run minimal, and use offline sources for the install?

Get the normal Ubuntu installer under 500 mb. Its overwhelmingly frustrating that I'm just barely unable to do this. I've read of Ubuntu Customization Kit, which ended up being lots of useless files and reams of gobbldegook. I've heard Ubuntu is packed with additional, nonrequisite software which makes it so large. Why can't there be a halfway version between normal and minimal?? Not everyone has internet and not everyone has a CD drive or large USB stick! Is there a way this can be accomplished? Does this version exist?

I have limited time and resources. Before you ask, no, I cannot afford a larger USB stick. I'm pinching pennies right now and there's nowhere near here that sells them anyway.
