Ubuntu Installation :: Igrating OS Install From Large HD To Smaller One

Apr 2, 2010

I need to use the drive which currently hosts an Ubuntu 9.10 server install. The Os install was the default Ubuntu partitioning. It created sda1, sda2 and sda5, Linux, Extended and Linux/Swap partitions, respectively. The start and end blocks for sda2 & 5 are the same. I am trying to figure out which method of migration would be the best. I have used ddrescue to clone hard drives and am not sure how this would work when migrating to a smaller HD (Moving from a 74GB to a 36GB). Would it be a good idea to shrink the partition with Gparted or something? The OS is only about 3-4GB.

The other way I could migrate is to use the tar backup I made. It should have everything needed as I used the notes from the Ubuntu Backup How To page. I just don't know how this works when installing to a new hard drive. Would I need to create or edit the MBR of the new hard drive? Can a tar backup capture any of the MBR info?I guess it shouldn't make much of a difference as to which method I use so I am open to suggestions as to which to try and any suggestions as to things to make sure to do.

I am using OS 11.0 Every time I boot my laptop (dell inspiron 9300 - ati video M300). I get the desktop display as 1920 X 1200. This is too large for my default. I use KRandRTray to resize back to 1024 X 768. How can I set 1024 X 768 as the default but still have the option to go to 1920 X 1200?

I am using 10.04 LTS Lucid, and I notice the free space of root is getting smaller and smaller.

Five months ago, there was about 3.9GB free space of root, but now it is only 1.6GB. I always run sudo apt-get autoremove and sudo apt-get autoclean every time the update is finished, and also use Bleachbit to clean the system, but both are useless.

I never faced such problem with older versions of Ubuntu, is there any measure to fix it?

1. There is not any .deb in the /var/cache/apt/archives.
2. The total content of /var/log is only 167.6 MB, that won't be a problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cloning To Smaller Disk?

Jun 3, 2010

I have my Mythbuntu 9.10 environment installed on an old 160GB PATA disk and have just purchased a new 64GB SSD that I want to transfer my installation to.In the past I've just used ddrescue to clone disks, however in this case the source disk is larger than the destination disk so it won't work. I only have a few GB of actual data on the 160GB disk, so the 64GB SSD is definitely going to be enough for me.

I guess I need someway of either cloning so that only the actual data and not the partition is brought across, or possible shrinking the partition(s) first on the source drive and then using the same ddrescue method I've used in the past.Just looking for some assistance on what method is the best/most reliable?

Software :: Install CloneZilla Image To Smaller Disk

Aug 18, 2010

I'm looking for some help on this issue. I have an image (Windows XP) made with CloneZilla of a 160Gb disk (used space = 11Gb) and I 'need' to restore that image to a smaller disk (120Gb). In order to try everything out I created a virtual machine in VMWare. I've tried about every option available in CloneZilla without succes. The latest thing I tried was using dd to just copy over the partition to a created partition on the smaller disk but when booting I got:

Code:Booting...Error loading operating system. Then I thought installing the image to a disk with the same size, resize the partition with GParted and make a new CloneZilla image, but for some odd reason (typical to Windows) when booting I get a BSOD, impossible to read. The BSOD happens when booting from the disk with the same size, before resizing the partition. This also is a virtual machine. Can anyone point out what I'm missing? Or, if anyone has succesfully done this, how did you go about it?

This is not because Clementine is QT4, I've got the same problem with Chrome, Opera etc. I've been messing with system-settings (KDE settings tool) a day before the fonts become that widespaced in order to make my KDE apps look more native on my GNOME, but I haven't touched the fonts settings there.

OpenSUSE Install :: DVD ISO Is Too Large

I use Brasero/K3b but both of them showed that the ISO is too large (4.7GB) - while the DVD capacity of the disk I'm using is 4.3 or so GB (Princo). Then I figured I'd try to extract the files and burn them like that (extracted iso being 4.2 GB). So then I encountered another issue, usually one would find boot.catalog, which wasn't the case here. Any ideas on how I should burn my DVD ISO ?

General :: Partitioning - Copy GNU Installation From A Smaller Partition To A Bigger Partition?

May 4, 2011

I got a new hard disk for my laptop and I want to move my Gentoo installation from old HDD to new.

Most simple guides recommend use of dd to copy the whole partition byte by byte.

I'm moving to the new drive because I don't have enough space on the old drive, so I don't want to simply clone the partition. Instead I need the destination partition to be bigger. Would dd work well in that case?

Assuming that I use same partition types on the new drive, would I be able to use simple cp with appropriate settings?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: How To Clone CentOS Installation To Smaller Drive

May 9, 2010

I am trying to clone the hard drive to a slightly smaller hard drive in the same computer, same setup. What software or commands do you use to clone the entire system and resize the partition automatically? The original HD is a little larger than the destination HD. The source partition only has about 20 GB in use and the rest is blank.

I have 2 partition, a small 100MB boot partition and another 500GB LVM partition.I can't just clone from the original disk to the new disk. (for another long reason) I need to make an image of the original disk on an external USB drive first, then move that image onto a new disk.I have tried creating an image of the whole disk with Clonezilla, but then the restoration didn't work because the target drive is smaller than the original.

OpenSUSE Install :: Default Root Partition Size For 11.2 - Too Large?

Jan 28, 2010

When I installed opensuse 11.2 64-bit (KDE) the installer set the root partition to 20GB by default. That seemed unnecessarily large, so I reduced it to 16GB. I then completed the install (basically a default KDE install minus games & educational stuff) and still had more than 8GB free. I'm aware that these days hard drive storage space is quite cheap, but it's not so cheap for me as I have an SSD. Would it not be reasonable to reduce the default root partition size to 12GB, or perhaps vary it according to the software package load selected?

Ubuntu Installation :: Sparc Blade With Large Vertical Stripes On Screen?

Jun 29, 2011

I've got 10.04 installed on my Blade 1000 workstation. Installed 6.06 first and worked my way up as per other postings. See attached cookbooks I wrote. Framebuffer is Elite3D-lite, and I have done the afbinit install. Using Xorg w/ Gnome and other windowing software to eliminate the possibility it is Gnome. From what I understand, Ubuntu does not require a custom X11 conf file like OpenBSD.

Current screen output shows large vertical stripes, where the stripes overlay on top of the GNOME desktop. Inside the stripes are the prior boot screen output of Ubuntu 10.04. When the screen saver kicks in, the Gnome desktop disappears, but the blue 10.04 stays visible. Mouse cursor moves across the screen, under each stripe as it goes.

My knowledge of framebuffers is limited. Would this then imply that the framebuffer is not fully "refreshing"? The screen does not provide full width even though the correct OpenBoot monitor configuration is set. Haven't found any mention of this issue from other Ubuntu/Linuxes Sparc users. Attached the X11 log. Looking at the log, I suspect this will need a custom X11 config file.

CentOS 5 :: 5.2 Installation Hangs On Server With Large Number Of Drives?

Apr 6, 2009

I am attempting to upgrade a system from 4.7 to 5.2 using a (now) DVD drive attached to the onboard IDE. Originally I had tried using a remote NFS image and a USB stick but I thought maybe there was a problem with the image. I can get up to the point of the installation of selecting the keyboard for the system and then it freezes and never goes any further. It doesn't appear to be a kernel panic since I can still switch between consoles.

I've got an MSI K9NGM2-FID with 14 drives in it. It serves as a file server for our backup server. It's got a secondary 4 port Silicon Image SII 3114 SATA card using the sata_sil module, and an old IDE Promise FastTrak TX2000. Technically I could have 16 drives but the 750W PS is walking the fine line on tripping it's self-breaker with the 14 drives and 7 fans. I would like to NOT have to disconnect all of this to do the upgrade.

I thought maybe that running the install using the "noprobe" option would help so it didn't detect and load the modules for the Silicon Image or the Promise cards and detect all of the drives but it still gets stuck on the step after selecting the keyboard. The installation info console and the dmesg console don't really provide any useful information. The installation console says:

INFO : moving (1) to step welcome
INFO : moving (1) to step language
INFO : moving (1) to step keyboard
INFO : moving (1) to step findrootparts

And the last lines of the dmesg console says:

<6>device-mapper: multipath: version 1.0.5 loaded
<6>device-mapper: multipath round-robin: version 1.0.0 loaded
<6>device-mapper: multipath emc: version 0.0.3 loaded

Is there a hidden "debug" option that will turn on a lot of extra logging?

Ubuntu :: Resolution Smaller Than Screen Size?

Feb 24, 2010

I feel really stupid posting this, but I can't find what I am looking for. I feel like I have a decent understanding what is going on, but I am missing something very elementary. I have several mpc clientpro machines that are all in one's with 17" monitors built in. I can't get any resolution to fill the screen. I have been playing around with settings in xrandr, to no avail.

In windows xp it is usually ran at 1024x768 resolution which is supported. However there will be about 2 1/2 inches of blank space on the right side of the scree. and then another 2 1/2 inches of blank space on the bottom followed by about 2" of what seems to be a mirror of the top 2". I can change to several different resolutions all taking up different sizes of the screen, but nothing will fill it.

I understand I can't just do anything I like, like it would be unreasonable to expect the card to output 1920x1080. But can't I get it to at least fit the screen? Whether it was 1024x768 or 1152x864 or 800x600.

I have been searching and searching, and I think I am just simply misunderstanding a key term that is not allowing me to find more information on this. Something like panning, overscan, etc.

I've noticed this issue for a long time now, and it's always bothered me. Whenever I have to open a file within a program or upload something to a website, etc., the window that pops up is always HUGE. The reason is due to the list of file types at the bottom. Instead of cutting off with an ellipsis at some point, every single applicable file type is listed. I can't resize these windows, either, so they always take up my entire screen. Is there any way to fix this so that these kinds of windows are a more reasonable size?
