I have only one OS ( Debian 'Squeeze' 6.0.1 ) installed on this system. I observe a time lag which gradually grows. I was asked to install ntpd to prevent this from happening in the future and I did install it which seemed to work for a few days but now I observe the lag again. Just to note, I notice it only when I hibernate my system.
View 1 RepliesI have been having a lot of trouble lately with installing from CD/DVD. The DVD reader/writer on this laptop is new. Nevertheless, trying to install Ubuntu onto an exernal HD, I get 'input output error on sr0 logical block (a large number) After a long time the booting proceeds to a point, but I never get the actual installation started, and have to shut down manually.
The CD is fine, says the Ubuntu-checker. I just installed using my sons laptop, and there was no trouble. Question: does this indicate a motherboard failure? A memory block damaged? Do you know of a diagnostic tool I can use to check the reading of a CD/DVD?
Since the upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze on my Notebook Toshiba Satellite Pro U200 with Intel Pro/Wireless 3945 ABG I have wireless connection problems.The connection breaks time to time and sometimes cannot connect automaticaly after restart. BTW I didn't change anything on the wireless or network configurations on the notebook and on the wiereless router.

I would like to figure why, since I'd rather not lose anything... My swap space is 5.9GB, I have 4GB RAM (video uses 1gb, so I have 3gb usable)

I have a strange problem on my new installation of Debian "Stretch".
After "loading initial ramdisk" the pc freeze, but if I reboot it, then it doesn't freeze and so I could work.
So for work each time I have to boot and reboot the pc; the second time the pc works.
I have recently dropped to a command line to run a DB server. In attempting to write a bit of Python to do this process I went to install emacs using apt-get and noticed that the foot print of the install was going to be around 130 Mb. Likewise with a couple other programs the install size was going to be a lot larger than I anticipated. I was wondering how the footprint could be so large and is there a way to install software without this blow out. While I am happy to use vi or import the code from a desktop with a GUI I think this would be interesting to know.

how big and widespaced the fonts on Clementine playlist are and how good they look on the appmenu (where my mouse pointer is). This is not because Clementine is QT4, I've got the same problem with Chrome, Opera etc. I've been messing with system-settings (KDE settings tool) a day before the fonts become that widespaced in order to make my KDE apps look more native on my GNOME, but I haven't touched the fonts settings there.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 2 ASUS Boxes (one with 8GB, one with 4GB) When both mtus are set at 7200, using scp to copy a 56MB file takes 2:06. If I reduce either mtu to 1500, the speed is 2 seconds. I'm wondering if this is some kind of kernel bug or driver bug or what. For the moment, I've lowered the mtu to 1500 to get the performance out of the machines, but find it interesting that what should make it faster is actually slowing down. Where should I post this to get it looked at? Is anyone else seeing it.I see a similar performance issue with smbclient too.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Debian 5 04 AMD64, when I double-click on any HTML document it is rendered in very large characters.I guess one of the browsers installed (Iceweasel or Epiphany) is selected by default but I cannot find any clue as to which one.What puzzles me most is that I have not yet edited the Apache2 config files to give access to the directories where these files are stored, nor the user etc, and as far as I understand these HTML documents should not yet be available to Apache2 and the browser.

Following a crash from a now detectable faulty stick of RAMM, I've lost one of my data hard disks and my fiddling with replacement seems to leave various errors/warnings mainly about GPT not supported and this message is still present despite trying fdisk, cfdisk, gpart, gparted, and(?).
System is an ASUS mobo using SATA drives (root 500Gb: MBR+3 partitions;/, swap, /home), and two 2.4TB with single partitions.
The machine I'm using has a PowerPC architecture so I'm somewhat limited to what flavors of Linux I can use and I don't want to go back to Mac OS 8.9. The HD is only 3.3 GB so I can't get both Debian and GNOME on it.

After deleting the log files, I was able to regain access to my GDM session. But I still cant find out what /dev/dm-0 is, and where all the 75 GB is being taken up.
I just noticed, however, even though I can access the drive A-OK via browser, terminal, and web services (Our wowza) when I enter gParted I get this error for sda, my primary OS drive!

What the heck is going on?
I've been using Ubuntu since 8.04 and I'm getting tired of it. Every time I update to the latest version, even if I wait awhile, something always breaks. I want an OS that I can update without having to worry about something breaking and I hear that Debian is great for that. I'll be installing it in a few hours when I get back from Iron Man 2. I just created this thread because I know I'm going to have questions. Don't worry, I'll try to solve any problems I come across myself before asking here. I'll be installing Debian Stable because I figure that'll be good enough for me.

Everything works on reboot but when i leave it running then when i wake up in the morning the card reader has stopped working and does not show up in lsusb. The only way to get it working again is to reboot then it stops after x amount of time and the same problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two mice, both are three button (left, right and middle) with scroll, one PS/2 and one wireless. The wireless is working properly and the PS/2 is not. The right button, the middle button and the scroll do not work.# X -configure has detected only one, which one? Do i need to put another Section Mouse1 for the second mouse? Why do i have on the Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7" so many buttons? From what i searched it should have been Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" (that's for the scroll button, up and down).

There used to be a time out period, 15 minutes I think, and now when I am chrooting 6 or 7 systems I need to give a password for every one of them. This gets old. I am sure there is a way to do this. Sudo visudo does not do it. It will Work until I reboot. When I run it again, the setting is the sames as I set it the last session. I need to redo it, exit and then put it back to where I want it again. I figure I am doing it in the wrong place but can't figure it out and it is really getting on my thungas.
