OpenSUSE Install :: How To Make Polipo Start At Bootup

Nov 25, 2009

I installed polipo and polipo working perfectly, but it won't startup when I bootup the system. To start polipo correctly, root privilige is needed. I remember that in Ubuntu polipo starts with the system after installation. What should I do to make polipo start during the bootup process?

OpenSUSE :: Polipo Doesn't Start At System Boot / Get It To Work?

Aug 28, 2010

When I was using polipo on Ubuntu, it automatically start at system boot.
Now I'm using opensuse, I installed polipo from the repository, however, I have to manually start it by using "sudo polipo". If root privilege is not given, polipo won't work correctly.
What should I do to make it start at boot automatically?

a friend told me to creat /etc/boot.local, with code...

Fedora :: Tor And Polipo - Polipo Doesn't Work

Jun 3, 2010

I am new to Fedora, not to RPM based distros (though it has been awhile) and I am not new to Linux. I like what I am seeing with Fedora, might be staying with it.

I am using Fedora 13.

I have Tor and Polipo installed. But for some reason Polipo doesn't want to work.

I did this -

Quote:

I added the config file[url] as it said in the /etc/polipo/ directory.

But on restart I get this error -

Quote:

Stopping it failed. Not sure if it is just not starting maybe? I also did this to the -

Quote:

If your SELinux config is not allowing tor or privoxy to run correctly, create a file named booleans.local in the directory /etc/selinux/targeted. Edit this file in your favorite text editor and insert "allow_ypbind=1". Restart your machine for this change to take effect.

I have tor button installed and checked Firefox Network Proxy settings when tor is running, it is set up fine and forwarding to port 8118 as it should.

I haven't configured the firewall yet in Fedora 13 yet.

What am I missing?

This is the error I am getting in Firefox with tor running

But when i check with 'service dansguardian status' it reports 'unused'.If i start dansguardian by hand, things work perfectly fine.I am in a desperate situation since there are 4 other computers which are dependent on this setup to work correctly

OpenSUSE Network :: Use Tor (0.2.1.26-2) With Polipo (1.0.4.1)

Nov 9, 2010

openSUSE 11.3 on T42 trying to use Tor (0.2.1.26-2) with polipo (1.0.4.1) with Firefox 3.6.12 and Torbutton 1.2.5

First time I tried to run it I had to restart polipo as root, having copied the config file from the tor project site but then all worked as hoped. I could toggle tor on and off with tor button and all was well. The tor test functioned and reported tor was working.

Today alas not so. I received error message to check polipo was running. It wasn't so I enabled it in system services and rebooted. Now polipo is running but when I try and use firefox for example to go to google, with torbutton enabled I get error message:- 504 Connect to Google failed: Connection refused.

I noted from other threads here that most people seem to use privoxy rather than polipo. Any reason for that? Is one better than the other?

OpenSUSE Network :: Susie 11.4 Network Manager Doesnt Start At Bootup

I am using an Acer Aspire 5536 AMD dual core laptop with a 64bit installation of Susie 11.4. Using 11.2 I had no problems connecting to the wireless router. As soon as 11.4 was installed, clean install, and the laptop rebooted, network manager failed to start, until manually invoked and then enabling networking through the system tray. Even after this it will not connect to a wired or wireless network sometimes for more than 30 minutes.

OpenSUSE Install :: Blank Screen & Mouse After Bootup

Jul 18, 2010

I just installed 11.3 on a Toshiba Satellite A305 laptop. After going through the install process it restarted (without a full reboot I believe) and spent a very long time going through a bunch of message. E.g. it spends about 10-15 minutes building java fonts, and warning me that Japanese/Chinese/Korean might not work in Java.About 20+ minutes after bootup it finishes with all the status messages (including a message that said it couldn't execute /usr/bin/cmp !?) and goes to a blank screen with a mouse sprite -- first a spinning circle, then a regular arrow sprite. So it's not a totally black screen, but all I have is the mouse sprite.

I let it sit there for over an hour.I think it was hitting the disk but nothing happened. I tried rebooting and it did the same thing.I tried setting the "nomodeset" boot parameter, which had helped someone with a similar problem no change.I tried it in failsafe mode no change.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 / Gnome Flakey Auto Bootup & Shutdown

Mar 29, 2010

I didn't notice any relevant complaints regarding 11.2 in the archives. The bootup & shutdow may be different problems. Randomly my recent install boots up fine or hangs with a blank black screen. A Ctl Alt F2 gets me to a prompt. Startx returns a lockfile comment that X is already running.

From here I can shut 11.2 down and restart it OK. There must be a bootlog kept in /var somewhere. I haven't tried the non-automatic bootup. The shutdown randomly drops back to the logout screen. Usually a shutdown command from there will shut it down. Sometimes shutdown doesn't work, but restart will finish the shutdown.

OpenSUSE Install :: Bootup Superblock Issue Related To /dev/disk/?

Jul 23, 2010

I decided I needed to expand my openSUSE partition because I was running out of room. There was some unallocated space following my /home and swap partitions that I wanted to assign to my / partition.

So after taking note that bad things could happen (as I've read everywhere), I got myself a copy of GParted (since Yast! partitioner doesn't move partitions, does it?) to start getting the thing to work. Well, actually, I got PartedMagic which has GParted (I realize it could be a problem NOW if they didn't have the latest version).

So the first step was to move the swap partition. I decided to do it one step at a time and only moved the swap partition to the end. That turned out fine...no problems whatsoever.

The next step is where the problem came in. It was moving the /home partition. It took a while to move but once it got to the end, it showed a message that was similar in nature to "error detected" without giving a long list of error messages. If it did, I probably would have copied it down. There wasn't anything in the "logs" either in GParted besides what it showed. Looking back, I probably should've went into /vars/logs to get additional log information but I guess I wasn't smart enough to do so (provided that GParted does leave log messages there which I think it does).

After that, it refreshed the drive and it ended up showing no partitions with an error and saying the only thing it can do is create a new partition table. After that, openSUSE wouldn't boot. After loading, (both normal and failsafe modes) it gives me the message in the link at the bottom. I can still access those partitions fine. Nothing's corrupted. Windows also boots up fine (it's on a different drive though) and reads the affected drive fine. Linux-based LiveCDs (including openSUSE 11.3) reads the partitions fine too.

I've tried using e2fsck on my ext4 partitions with commands I found during a search and they seemed to "fix" those partitions but it still won't boot and gives me the same message. Looking at it carefully, it seems the reason it can't find a superblock is because it can't find part8 of whatever that thing under /dev/disk/by-id/ is.

I would very much prefer a failsafe (or at least mostly failsafe) solution that won't (or is unlikely) to result in requiring the restoration of a backup but I do understand that there is always the chance of something going wrong that will kill everything. Considering that I can still access the data on that drive, I don't believe the data is corrupted. Maybe the drive itself (as in whatever signatures it may leave) but not the filesystems.

This is what I end up with trying to boot into openSUSE (sorry, I don't know how to get the log when it doesn't put it in logs directory: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B3A...ut=list&num=50

OpenSUSE Install :: Higher Framebuffer Resolutions Not Available During Bootup/console - Nvidia Properietary Driver?

Jun 26, 2011

I'm using the 270.41.19 nvidia properietary driver for my Geforce GTX460 graphics card. I have a Sony TV connected to my HDMI and I know it supports the 1920x1080 resolution. Yes it works after gnome or other DE loads up.

But during the GRUB screen and the bootup console - It defaulted to a 640x480 resolution (as it always does with the nvidia prop driver). I usually used to check the output of hwinfo --framebuffer and choose the resolution by appending the right vga=0xabc parameter.

But now I have a problem since hwinfo says the best widescreen 16:10 framebuffer resolution that my card supports is 1280x800. Here is the output from hwinfo --vbe which should give the info about both my gfx card and my TV.

The initial nouveau driver was able to output native 1920x1080 during the bootup on the console without issues, so I guess even the properietary driver should be able to output (If my understanding is right the nvidia module loads later during the bootup and only is required for the X but not for the console itself).

Fedora Networking :: How To Start Wlan0 On Bootup

Dec 4, 2010

I've been able to get a laptop on Fedora 14 (2.6.35.6-48) working with a Netgear WNA1100 Once up and running, I execute "ifconfig wlan0 up" from root, and everything connects just fine and is stable as long as I stay logged in. But, I haven't found how to do this automatically on boot.

I've tried to use NetworkManager, but I cannot figure out how to get the GUI to show up - it says its running and enabled in the Services gui, but I haven't figured out how to actually use it! I checked to see if the nm-applet is running with ps, and for the user login, I see:

I'm not sure if the "sm-disable" flag is my problem, or how to change it. I'm not even sure if NetworkManager will allow me to set things up for bootup, but that is the path I ran down...

I assume this is a fundamentally easy process to set this up on bootup, but I'm not stumbling across the method. I recall doing this kind of thing years ago when I was an engineer, and before I got my lobotomy to become a manager...

Ubuntu Security :: Tor+Polipo - Vidalia Not Working?

Jun 7, 2011

I just recently installed Tor again on my new Natty install along with Vidalia. It was working initially, but for some reason it has ceased to function within the last 24 hours. When I start Tor (either from the command-line or Vidalia) and go to check.torproject.org, it says that Tor isn't running. (I don't use Torbutton with Firefox, if that makes any difference. I use FoxyProxy, but the settings look fine to me. It was working only yesterday.) I've checked the config files for Polipo and Tor, and I've checked my Vidalia settings more times than I can count. It all looks perfectly satisfactory.

I'm sure that it's not my firewall, Tor/Polipo configurations, or Vidalia settings. When I launch Tor with Vidalia and check the logs, everything works just fine and it says I'm connected. The only thing I can think of is that it might be a FoxyProxy issue or a problem with check.torproject.org, but the settings for FoxyProxy look okay and check.torproject.org hasn't malfunctioned in the past.

I've purged and reinstalled Tor, Vidalia, and Polipo and restored their config files and settings to the defaults, but still to no avail. My current malfunctioning Tor configuration is identical to my old and functional one, so far as I can tell.

Code:

Is it possible to run Polipo together with Privoxy? Yes. In order to get the privacy enhancements of Privoxy and much (but not all) of the performance of Polipo, you should put Polipo upstream of Privoxy.

In other words, you should:

point your web browser at Privoxy (localhost:8118);
point Privoxy at Polipo (put forward / localhost:8123 in the Privoxy config file);
use no parent proxy in Polipo.

Now i tried to use Dansguardian togather with Privoxy and Dansguardian with the same configuration but fail.

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Too Slow On Start Up. OpenSUSE-WindowsXP Dual Boot?

Jul 18, 2011

I have an 1TB hard drive, half of it for Windows XP SP3, another half for OpenSUSE 11.4. After installing OpenSUSE, it didn't take me much time to notice that there was something wrong with KDE: sometimes it loaded quite fast, as expected, but most of the time I'd have to wait around 1 minute in that loading screen. Then I updated the kernel, as well as KDE itself, but that didn't solve the problem.

After that I tried to start the system using Enlightnment, and it was lightning fast compared to KDE, however, I didn't quite like its interface, and for some reason GNOME refused to start. All that was too frustrating to me, so I gave up and have been using Windows for the last few weeks. Got sick of it now and here I am on OpenSUSE again. Oh, it feels sooo much better! BUT, I'm still with the same problem.

My specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H (with updated BIOS, version F11)
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450
Memory: 2GB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (using NVIDIA proprietary drivers)
OpenSUSE 11.4
KDE 4.6.0
Did I forget anything important?

Ps.: I didn't have these problems with Mandriva 2010.2, which, if I'm correct, used the same KDE version.

OpenSUSE Install :: Update Start But Would Stop Right In The Middle And Refuse To Install Pulseaudio(...) Package

Jun 18, 2010

I have just visited this page here, Updating openSUSE - openSUSE I have been trying to update my OpenSuSE system for a week now and I have absolutely no idea what causes this problem. The update would start but would stop right in the middle and refuse to install some pulseaudio(...) package... It would indicate that network is down while I am sure it is up.

I am behind a proxy and I have again and again made sure that the proxy settings are correct and alright. Since it downloads some of the packages in the start I believe my connection and settings are OK. Maybe the SuSE server is down, but not for a whole week, I don't think so. I would also like to mention that I have only tried updating through YaST GUI and I am, as of yet, unaware of any console or command-line methods of updating.

I really would like to update my system because I happen to be paranoid in matters of computer security. (Just kidding) But since I cannot install any updates it should mean I might have problem installing new software. So my digital life is literally crippled because of this problem.
