OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 On Virtual Box 3.2 Installation?

May 19, 2010

Having messed up my old 11.1 VM I decided to start anew with 11.2 on Virtual Box 3.2. First attempt to install resulted in a crashing (aborted) system after the first reboot (before automatic configuration). Second attempt to install resulted in a GNOME-based system with a weird-looking login screen.

I tried to configure my account for auto-login but was told by the help that GDM or KDM are required for that. So I tried to install GDM (since I was using GNOME) and couldn't find it. I installed KDM instead.

Then I rebooted and found myself at a text mode login prompt (but in runlevel 5). For some reason the system didn't start X and KDM. Otherwise the system seemed healthy:

I logged in and started X (startx) and everything worked perfectly. However, runlevel 5 is supposed to start X and isn't and KDM never showed up. And why couldn't I install GDM? And why is GDM or KDM not part of the default install?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 - Dell SAS / SATA Virtual Disks (RAID 1)

Sep 17, 2010

I have a Dell Studio XPS running openSUSE 11.2 with dual mirrored disks (using Dell's SATA controller). Does anyone know how I can set up automatic monitoring of the disks so that I will be informed if either fail? I think smartd might be what I need here. Is that correct? I added:
/dev/sda -a -d sat -m <my email>
/dev/sda -a -d sat -m <my email>

smartd is running, but how do I know that it will report what I need? I also have a client with a Dell PowderEdge SC440 with SAS 5/iR also running openSUSE 11.2. They also require automatic monitoring. There doesn't seem to be a SAS directive for smartd. I notice that the newer release says it does support SAS disk. I upgraded to 5.39. On restart (with DEVICESCAN as the directive) I get the following in /var/log/messages for my SAS RAID disk.

Sep 18 10:47:26 harmony-server smartd[25234]: Device: /dev/sdb, Bad IEC (SMART) mode page, err=4, skip device
I ran:
smartctl -a /dev/sdb
and got the result:

Device: Dell VIRTUAL DISK Version: 1028
Device type: disk
Local Time is: Sat Sep 18 11:32:08 2010 JST

Is there some other tool/package that does support DELL virtual disks?

Ubuntu Installation :: Install On Windows Virtual PC?

May 1, 2010

I'd like to install the 10.04 32-bit inside a Windows7 VirtualPC.Got the cd burned, and my virt-pc set up (1 GB RAM, 16GB fixed size virtual disk).I started up the virt-pc, and it automatically booted up from the cd, getting as far as asking me what language I'd like to use, but after selecting English and pressing enter, the virtual-pc window just blinked away.Subsequent attempts to start the virt-pc result in a window popping up, listing some text (free memory, can't read the rest -- too fast), which then blinks away almost immediately.

I was using these URL... directions as a guide.Anyone know if this should work? Or should I go with VirtualBox?The host pc is running 64-bit-win7-pro, amd quad-core, 4gb ram, lots of free disk, in case any of that matters.

OpenSUSE Install :: Virtual Memory / Resident Memory Of Server?

Feb 3, 2010

we found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.

Debian Installation :: Moving Debian Install From Virtual Machine To Physical

Feb 20, 2010

I have been learning Debian by using a virtual machine. After fine-tuning my installation procedure, I decided to copy that installation to my physical system. The hard drive already has another Linux based system installed. I plan to dual boot. After copying files I updated fstab and menu.lst.The partition scheme between the virtual and physical environments are similar, but the partitions are not mapped exactly the same. Thus the Debian system on the physical hard drive fails to boot simply because the initrd is created for the root partition location on the virtual machine. The initrd created in the virtual machine is looking for the root file system on /dev/hda1 whereas on my physical drive the new location is /dev/sda7.How can I rebuild the initrd on the physical system? I started to use the installation DVD in rescue mode, but I did not get too far.

Fedora Installation :: Install Fedora 10 From Vista In Virtual Machine

Feb 14, 2009

I am an inexperienced Linux user, I have tried Knoppix and Ubuntu in the past. Since we use Fedora servers at work I have wanted to try Fedora for some time and I tried running it in a virtual machine. My virtual machine is Sun VirtualBox and my OS is Vista Ultimate. Everything worked well until it was time to decide where Fedora is to be installed.Alright, screenshot time yet? This is where I hit the wall, the screen where you select installation drive/partition. The field is greyed out as you can see.

I have prepared a partition, at first I formatted it in FAT32 but because I didn't see it in the installation screen I just re-formatted it in NTFS.Installing with virtual machine should be working? Why is the field grey? What to do? Is it because I have mounted the dowloaded disc image instead of burning it?
I have a 64-bit architecture AMD processor with 2GB RAM and have tried Ubuntu 64-bit in the past, is there a 64-bit version of Fedora and would that be better or worse for me than 32-bit version?

OpenSUSE Install :: Option (Installation Regarding To Opensuse And Windows Server 2008?

Mar 20, 2011

right now, my machine runs ubuntu 10.10 due to work issue, i need to use windows server 2008 R2 (its a windows exclusive company) but i never used any of the active directory or anything from the windows server (only experience with windows is visual studio and those GAMES!), so i figure i need to practice a bit on my own b4 starting the job and just at the same time I found out as a univ student i get it for free! And plus, I am finding opensuse a better option for me than ubuntu So im wondering what i should do regarding these 2 systems here s some option

1). Install openSuse 11.4, and install VirtualBox and use windows server 2008 R2 on vbox
2). Install windows server 2008 R2 and then install openSuse alongside with it
3). Install windows server 2008 R2 and install openSuse in virtualBox

I have been using linux as my primary OS for more than a year now and I rlly need it for both school and my own entertainment. So wondering which option would best work out for me

wat are your opinions? PS: my machine is about 2 years ago a Dell laptop, with core 2 duo p8700 (2.53ghz) 4GB ram, and nvidia gfx, which even tho is still fast, but isnt rlly that snappy when it comes to virtualization even running xp in a virtual machine is quite laggy at times :S
