I am installing debian onto my external usb hdd, through sun virtual box. The problem is that every time i reboot my hdd the instalation disappears and i need to go through it all again, am i doing something wrong ? or is it not meant to be on an external hdd ?

The hard drive already has another Linux based system installed. I plan to dual boot.After copying files I updated fstab and menu.lst.The partition scheme between the virtual and physical environments are similar, but the partitions are not mapped exactly the same.Thus the Debian system on the physical hard drive fails to boot simply because the initrd is created for the root partition location on the virtual machine. The initrd created in the virtual machine is looking for the root file system on /dev/hda1 whereas on my physical drive the new location is /dev/sda7.How can I rebuild the initrd on the physical system? I started to use the installation DVD in rescue mode, but I did not get too far.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy laptop is running Linux Mint 9 and I am trying to install Fedora 13 in a virtual machine within Virtualbox. However, it's not working. It takes forever to get past the initial white/blue loading bar when it first boots and then it just goes white, so I can't see anything. I've already tried modifying the bootline parameter of the live CD to include noprobe, noacpi, noapic, nousb, and nofirewire. However, the result is the same. Am I missing something? Is it possible to install this?

Linux ubuntu 11.04 does not install on my virtual machine? I have a problem installing ubuntu on my virtual machine. recently I downloaded ubuntu and burned it to a cd and a dvd. but now I have a problem, when after the setup is nearly 80% percent complete. the installation stops and says that cd or dvd has a problem. but I have tested the cd and dvd and even the dvd drive, also the .Iso file using 7zip and cd checker. I allocated 304 mb of ram out of 896 mb. I am using oracle vbox 4.0.6 and win xp as host.

I have 2 virtual hosts (example1.com, example2.com). example1.com works but example2.com is sent to the index file of example1.com. I did some searching on google and it seems the problem might be with my /etc/hosts file.

I'm using the debian testing netinst image (from below url) and trying to install on virtualbox (part of a debian testing vagrant base box build pipeline I've got). This hasn't worked properly for last couple of weeks. Host system is also debian testing.URL....
if I accept all the defaults through the installer (apart from small details like timezone), I end up with a system in which the network does not work. It seems that /etc/network/interfaces has eth0 but the actual network card is called enp0s3, so no network comes up at first boot (despite that the network works fine during the actual install). I can easily fix it after the first boot by editing /etc/network/interfaces and replacing eth0 by enp0s3 and then doing an ifup. This is fine for a workaround but begs the question of why does it fail in the first place.
I have googled a bit and found this thread: [URL] .... which describes a similar issue, and there are other threads out there describing the change.
The udev change seems reasonable enough, but also some package involved in basic debian netinst installation has a bug given that the default install path results in a broken system. Question is, is there a bug already reported (I couldn't find it), or else, which package should I report the issue against? End result should be basic install does not require editing after boot to fix the network.
On Debian lenny, when I wanted to go from X to a virtual console, I would type (for example) <Ctrl> <Alt> <F1>. Then I got the traditional 25x80 screen, which is wonderful in bad lighting conditions.
On Debian squeeze, virtual consoles are no longer 25x80. They fit way more than 25x80 characters on the screen. They go through the frame buffer, which I guess I must keep that way because otherwise it would ruin X.
But I want my 25x80 back, for those bad lighting conditions.
If I set /etc/default/console-setup to FONTFACE="VGA", at least I get a readable font.
ANd if I set /etc/default/console-setup to SCREEN_WIDTH=80 and SCREEN_HEIGHT=25, they do the obvious, but the characters are just as small, and the data is all in the upper left corner of the screen.
How do I get 25x80 so it fills the screen, as in the days of lenny, without removing /dev/fb0?
My Debian Lenny box has two hard drives: a smaller one, upon which I installed the system and a 500GB drive which, during installation, I assigned for mounting as the "/home" directory. A few days ago, the smaller (system) hard drive crashed. Although fsck was able to make the drive mountable again, many system files (esp. things like inittab) were lost.
Since the machine, itself, had actually been pretty old when I first installed Debian (Etch, originally), I am going to be replacing it with a new system and I have a few questions about getting this all done.
First of all, the old computer was a Pentium 4 and the new one is a Dual-core, 64-bit Pentium (E6600) with 4GB RAM and a 500GB SATA drive. I'd like to install 64-bit Debian Squeeze onto that drive and, since I've never used the 64-bit Debian before, would like to know if there are any pitfalls or caveats - especially any dire reasons I should stick with 32 bits, instead.
Next, I would like to keep the other 500GB (IDE) drive mounted on "/home" so that my things would be where they already were on the old system - especially files relating to Iceweasel and Icedove. Of course, there are no binaries on that drive, since I had all of that on the drive that crashed, but are there any other things I must take into consideration? Also, what would be the best way to make that drive "/home" during the new installation without wiping it out, but having it ready for when I create the users so I can point them to their appropriate directories?
Finally, since the old computer had been an Etch system that had been upgraded to Lenny and since I would be installing Squeeze (and, likely, the 64-bit Squeeze, at that) onto the new system, would there be any problems with the above scenario, considering the potential of older configuration files, etc. on the old "/home" drive?
My subject line says, "Updating while moving to new machine," but these really may not be "update" questions, per se. Then again, the presence of that old hard drive does introduce some update-like elements into the equation, and that is why I am asking these questions.
I am dual booting a pc with Ubuntu and Windows 7. I am using Grub as the boot loader. I then boot into Windows 7 and Create a virtual hard drive (.vhd) file using Disk2Vhd. After the machine is converted, I boot into Ubuntu, and import the .vhd into Virtualbox.
Problem:When I turn on the virtual machine in Virtualbox, It comes up with Grub rescue. How do install Grub to the virtual machine. I can boot the virtual machine in virtualbox off of a Ubuntu CD, and then somehow install Grub...
I downloaded Fedora 12 which happens to be an ISO file.
I created a Virtual Machine with VM Player and specified the ISO file to boot from.
According to the Fedora Installation Guide, I can run the application called "Install To Hard Drive".
When I execute this application, It does nothing. Is there any tricks on how to install Fedora on a Virtual Machine or have I misunderstood?

I think it's trying to install the whole desktop environment.I was searching the web but all articles are for desktop machines and nobody mentions my problem with the dependencies. I also have openconnect installed in two Gnome desktop machines without problems.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.
