I would like to install a program (R for statistical computing). I am using Slackware. On the download page of R (The Comprehensive R Archive Network) there are options to download the code for Debian, Redhat, Suse, and Ubuntu. Which one should I download in my case (using Slackware)? Is there any of them which I should not download?

View 6 Replies View RelatedHaving messed up my old 11.1 VM I decided to start anew with 11.2 on Virtual Box 3.2. First attempt to install resulted in a crashing (aborted) system after the first reboot (before automatic configuration). Second attempt to install resulted in a GNOME-based system with a weird-looking login screen.
I tried to configure my account for auto-login but was told by the help that GDM or KDM are required for that. So I tried to install GDM (since I was using GNOME) and couldn't find it. I installed KDM instead.
Then I rebooted and found myself at a text mode login prompt (but in runlevel 5). For some reason the system didn't start X and KDM. Otherwise the system seemed healthy:
I logged in and started X (startx) and everything worked perfectly. However, runlevel 5 is supposed to start X and isn't and KDM never showed up. And why couldn't I install GDM? And why is GDM or KDM not part of the default install?
I've been trying to stop kdm the normal way, switching to a virtual terminal with ctrl+alt+f1 and using:
Code:
I've done it this way in other distro's and it's always worked.
How do I stop/start kdm from a virtual terminal in Suse ?
Can I copy my virtual box VM windows XP virtual-machine files to another Linux computer and run the machine on that computer while I keep on running it on the original computer?
This question is about technical possibilities, not licences.
I just tried to install virtual box by downloading the RPM from their website running it with yast. It said install succesful but I checked the install log and this is the result that I got. The program will not start. I want to run opensuse as my host and install Windows XP to run on top of it for my wife.
My software is System Atom 2GB of ram ION

I have a Dell Studio XPS running openSUSE 11.2 with dual mirrored disks (using Dell's SATA controller). Does anyone know how I can set up automatic monitoring of the disks so that I will be informed if either fail? I think smartd might be what I need here. Is that correct? I added:
/dev/sda -a -d sat -m <my email>
/dev/sda -a -d sat -m <my email>
smartd is running, but how do I know that it will report what I need? I also have a client with a Dell PowderEdge SC440 with SAS 5/iR also running openSUSE 11.2. They also require automatic monitoring. There doesn't seem to be a SAS directive for smartd. I notice that the newer release says it does support SAS disk. I upgraded to 5.39. On restart (with DEVICESCAN as the directive) I get the following in /var/log/messages for my SAS RAID disk.

Is there some other tool/package that does support DELL virtual disks?
I have installed Vbox on 2 systems running Opensuse 11.3 and both have experienced knetworkmanager failure. Knetworkmanager failed after a failed wake up from sleep mod, which also had been working perfectly until this failure. I am wondering if the vbox kernel modules could be causing this isssue. To temporarily fix the problem I am running my network connections through yast networks setting . (which uses the traditional ifup method and everything is working)

Has anyone gotten XP Mode to work in Win 7- while Win 7 is running in VBox? Everything installs seemingly error free- XP Mode, and the two updates. I then start Win XP Mode. The computer goes through 25 minutes or so of setting up XP mode for 'first use'. At the end, a message appears: "Could not complete setup. Please try again". In Win7, I've removed XP Mode from Programs and Features, and reinstalled. No change.

View 2 Replies View RelatedEvery where I look online, people are posting ridiculous non-working ways to upgrade their system from one release to another--they do not work for me and I need a definite expert reply. I am working with a fresh install of Debian Lenny/Stable and wish to upgrade to the frozen Squeeze distribution. Supplementing the word "squeeze" in place of "lenny" in my sources.list file does not work and believe this to be an inappropriate way of upgrading. I have tried upgrading apt, dpkg, and aptitude before beginning the upgrade process, cleaning dpkg cache, rebooting, etc.
After updating the above packages I tried all methods of upgrading: safe-upgrade, full-upgrade, and dist-upgrade. All produce dependency problems and try to remove the gnome-desktop package or upgrade everything else except gnome-desktop. (Other packages are also affected, gnome-desktop is the most important in this instance). As I understand it, when upgrading you can comment out the volatile repositories as well as the security updates, is this correct?--either way I have tried countless combination's off commenting/uncommenting to try to get the needed results. I do not want use sid repos or reinstall.

we found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.
